Paul Gauguin, French Post-Impressionist painter born in 1848. Main representative in the School of Pont-Aven and inspirator of the Nabis, he developed the most distinctive part of his production in the Caribbean (Martinique) and Oceania (French Polynesia), painting mostly landscapes and nudes very bold for the time for its hardiness and colorful rotund, opposing beautician and bourgeois painting predominant in Western culture.
His work maintained its influence longer than the Impressionists, contributing decisively to the modern art of the twentieth century. His experiments on color and generally the whole of his work influenced the evolution of painting, both Picasso and German Expressionism, and had special impact on fauvism. He died in 1903.

Red Grooms, American multimedia artist born in 1937, best known for his colorful pop-art constructions depicting frenetic scenes of modern urban life.
During the late 1950s and early 1960s, Grooms made a number of "Happenings".
Today Grooms is recognized as a pioneer of site-specific sculpture and installation art. City of Chicago (1967), a room-sized, walk-through "sculpto-pictorama," features sky-scraper-proportioned sculptures of Mayor Daley and Hugh Hefner "joined by such historical figures as Abraham Lincoln, Al Capone, and fan-dancer Sally Rand, accompanied by a sound track featuring gunfire and burlesque music. Grooms's genius for rendering the intricacies of architectural ornament is vividly apparent in several three-dimensional vistas of Chicago's famous buildings. Evident here and in the numerous other cityscapes Grooms has created is his extraordinary ability to capture a sense of place with a great sensitivity to detail."

"Bailarina desnuda / The Nude Ballerina", óleo sobre lienzo / oil on canvas, 151 x 150 cm., 1907-1909.

In 1909, Zarraga sent two paintings to the exhibition in Rome, the Allegory of Autumn (now in the National Museum of Art) and The Naked Ballerina at the time acquired by the Museum of Oran and today graces the Blaisten collection. The Italian critic Rodolfo Panichi the called the second painting as "truly remarkable for the sobriety of color and the overall intonation and vigor of modeling." And described it as "a girl wearing only a black Spanish veil over her head moves on a terrace with mild dance step, with a kind of compound and hieratic attitude that gives the figure a sense of chastity, despite the nudity ...; almost gives the impression of a serious Byzantine priestly figure. The clothes and blanket are set with harmony of tones on the parapet of the terrace that opens to the field; right, a woman, with design and admirable poise, between indifferent and angry, waiting sitting, peering however mockingly of accustomed enjoyer, the effect produced on the spectator." And characterized the execution of the work as "voluntarily cold and punished."Adding to an open and bright landscape of contrasting figures (dressed and naked, young and old), and ritual character that gives them, are a brand of  Zárraga creations in those years. Is very possible this painting is related to La femme et le Pantin, also signed in 1909 and which share the same source of literary inspiration.
