Manos a la obra / Let's get down to work (I) - Magritte, Pollock, Freud, Velázquez

From my corner on Facebook I import this series to continue it ... a kind of remix version, with more material and other comments that come to the event. This is going to share pictures of artists in action, during the creative process, or at least with a paddle in hand, or with a chisel. We know that often they pose as if they are doing something in front of his work ... but at least it will help to know the look and get an idea of the people behind the works. Here we go ...

René François Ghislain Magritte
(Lessines, België / Bélgica / Belgium, 1898 -
Brussel / Bruselas / Brussels, 1967)

René Magritte pintando / painting "La Clarividencia / The Clairvoyance" / , 1936.

November 21, 1898, in Lessines, Belgium - August 15, 1967, in Brussels, Belgium) was a Belgian surrealist painter. Known for his witty and provocative images, he aimed through his work to change the preconditioned perception of reality and force the viewer to become hypersensitive to his surroundings.
Magritte endowed surrealism with a conceptual charge based on the play of ambiguous images and their meaning denoted through words, questioning the relationship between a painted object and the real one.

"La Clarivoyance / La Clarividencia / The Clairvoyance", 1936.

"I am not an artist, but a man who thinks", defined René Magritte himself, and painted a foreshortened self-portrait, painting a bird with its wings spread while gazing intently at an egg. The canvas is an example of René Magritte's logic and humor. All the philosophical disquisitions that such a significant image may entail are left for one's own entertainment and solace. More of Magritte's work here.

Autorretrato delante de / Self Portrait in front of "Le Masque vide", Le Perreux-sur-Marne, 1928

"Le masque vide / La máscara vacía / The Empty Mask"
Óleo sobre lienzo / oil on canvas, 81,2 x 116,2 cm., 1928. National Museum of Wales (Gales, UK)

In his essay "Words and Images", published in 1929, the Belgian surrealist Magritte observed that each image "suggests that there are others behind it". Viewed through an independent, irregularly shaped frame, these images are a sky, a lead curtain scalloped with bells and whistles, the facade of a house, a cut-out sheet of paper, a searchlight, and fire.
The title evokes the fear of the invisible that permeates the artist's work and reflects the surrealist fascination with the subconscious. Text translated from here.

Paul Jackson Pollock
(Cody, Wyoming, EE.UU./ WY, USA, 1912 -

Paul Jackson Pollock (January 28, 1912, Cody, Wyoming, United States - August 11, 1956, Springs, New York, United States) was an influential American artist and a reference in the Abstract Expressionism movement. Considered one of the most important painters of the United States in the twentieth century. I am not going to extend too much since you can find abundant information everywhere, but I am interested in the "Action Painting", the technique used by Pollock placing the canvas on the floor and evolving around it, using various methods for the paint to reach the canvas; stiff brush, dripping, spraying or throwing it directly. With this he achieves a sort of ordered chaos, reaching a very curious control of the subject. If you look closely, the apparent chaos is quite deliberate.

Lucian Freud (Berlin, December 8, 1922 - London, July 20, 2011) was a British painter and printmaker, considered one of the most important figurative artists in contemporary art.
After being initiated in surrealism in his youth, he became after the Second World War one of the main representatives of English figurative painting. Specialized in portraits, these usually exclude the expression of feelings and the characters depicted appear under a strong light, and with a very perceptible carnality in the case of nudes.

Work featuring Leigh Bowery, a unique Australian-born character who was a regular model in several of Lucian Freud's works and traveled to be present at the opening events of the exhibitions.
"Obviously I'm aware that I'm using people to make my portraits. But I realized that the fact that [Leigh Bowery] was a significant artist that whatever he did, he did it with a sense of performance because of his physical constitution, which was extraordinary." (excerpted from "Freud at Work: Photographs by Bruce Bernard and David Dawson")

In order not to repeat a well-known work, I will keep the detail of the dog, which I love. Plenty of information everywhere, for example here.
