Jorge Segundo Vinatea Reinoso, or Reynoso, Peruvian painter and caricaturist born in Arequipa in 1900. His art falls within the indigenismo category, although he was not part of the movement led by José Sabogal.
He was the eighth child of a poor family, but he was able to study at the "Colegio Nacional de la Independencia Americana", a government school created by order of Simón Bolívar. His talent for art had manifested itself at an early age, when he made watercolor landscapes of the area around his home. His first exhibition was held when he was only seventeen, in the photography studio of Max T. Vargas (1874-1959), father of Alberto Vargas.

The following year, he went to Lima, where he found employment drawing caricatures and cartoons for the weekly cultural and literary magazine Sudamérica, whose contributors included José Carlos Mariátegui, César Vallejo and Abraham Valdelomar. That same year, he enrolled at the Escuela Nacional Superior Autónoma de Bellas Artes, where he studied with Daniel Hernández Morillo, a rigorous teacher in the Academic style who had spent most of his life in Europe. He also studied with the Spanish sculptor, Manuel Piqueras Cotolí. In the following years, he worked as an illustrator for the magazines Mundial and Variedades. In 1922, his comic strip, Travesuras de Serrucho y Volatín, was one of the first in Peru to use speech balloons.
In 1924, he finished his studies and joined the faculty at the Escuela. Two years later, he held a major exhibition and his works received critical praise. Together with his friend, Alejandro González Trujillo, he travelled to Puno, Cuzco and other parts of southern Peru, where he created some of his best known indigenista paintings.
Intensely concentrated on his work, he ignored his health and died of tuberculosis in 1931, aged only thirty-one.

Moll was a founder-member of the Vienna Secession in 1897 and, in 1903 encouraged the use of the Belvedere Gallery to show exhibitions of modern Austrian art. In 1905 he, along with Gustav Klimt, left the Secession, although Moll continued to be involved with the exhibition of art in Vienna including the first exhibition in Vienna of the work of Vincent van Gogh (the second painting above the sideboard in his 1906 self-portrait is Van Gogh's Portrait of the Artist's Mother). His paintings are characterized by the use of pointillist techniques within a strict organization of the surface of the painting.

On April 24 is the birthday of

Clara Arnheim, German painter born in Berlin in 1865, best known for her depictions of life among the fishermen on the Baltic coast. Her younger brother, Fritz Arnheim, was a noted historian.
Despite her family's resistance to the idea of a woman being a professional painter, she studied with Franz Skarbina in Berlin and Edmond Aman-Jean in Paris. Among the many organizations of which she was a member, the "Verein der Berliner Künstlerinnen" (an artists' society for women) and the Deutscher Künstlerbund are especially notable.
In 1914, on the occasion of the 150th anniversary of the Hochschule für Grafik und Buchkunst Leipzig, she displayed two graphic works at the "Internationalen Ausstellung für Buchgewerbe und Grafik" (BUGRA) and was awarded a gold medal.

At the beginning of the 1920s, she helped Henni Lehmann create the Blaue Scheune, an exhibition venue in Hiddensee, where she later took up residence. An organization known as the "Hiddensoer Künstlerinnenbund" was established, which numbered Elisabeth Andrae, Käthe Loewenthal, Katharina Bamberg and Elisabeth Büchsel among its members.
Following the Nazi seizure of power, she was served with a Berufsverbot and was unable to exhibit or accept commissions. Over the years, the harassment worsened until she found it almost impossible to obtain ration stamps. Luckily, her friends in Hiddensee were able to supply her with food in secret. The establishment of a ban against travel by Jews came while she was on a visit. Unable to return home, her resources dwindled and, in July 1942, she was transported to Theresienstadt, where she was put to death a few weeks later.

"Piaci kutya / Perro en el mercado / Dog at the Market", Kulon Progo, Java, 2014

On April 22 is the birthday of

Attila Bartis, Hungarian writer and photographer born in 1968 in Târgu Mureş in Transylvania, Romania.
His father, Ferenc Bartis, writer, journalist was dispossessed of Romanian nationality in 1984. The family moved to Budapest. Young Bartos studies photography. At 27, he publishes his first novel A séta ("Promenade"). The collection of short stories Kék pára ("Blue Fog") was published three years later. A Nyugalom ("Tranquility") is a great success which encourages Bartis to adapt to the theater under the title Anyám, Kléopátra ("Cleopatra, my mother"). He was an essayist for Élet és Irodalom ("Life and Literature") for a year. He published the serials of this period under the title Lázár apokrifek ("The apocrypha of Lazarus").
Over the past 30 years his attention as an artist has been drawn – in complementary fashion – both to the practice of writing (the expression of thoughts on paper) and to the making of pictures (the capturing of visible moments). The associations engendered by pictures and the principles arising from the editing of the various photographic series are recognisable in his prose. It is no accident that the figure of the photographer appears repeatedly in his novels and dramatic works; Bartis’s heroes often take a camera in hand and share with the reader the thought-motives and dilemmas of producing photographs.

"Óriásplakát éjjel / Póster gigante por la noche / Giant Poster at Night", Taipei, Taiwan, 2014

If we examine how a writer’s imagination or the idea of a pictorial composition determines the finished work, then a possible answer to this is the artist’s experiencing of his own duality. As a writer, he puts down on paper stories and cause-effect sequences with the aim of engendering new thoughts in the mind of the reader, but as a photographer the opposite is the case: with his camera, he seeks out, not events, but rather situations, forms and motifs. Still, the effect of his pictures reveals connections that are novel and often unexpected even from his own perspective, as if reality were a mechanism operating according to its own laws. Thus, whereas during the writing process the surprise factor can claim no special role, for the photographer the associations and tension triggered by a picture may well hold unexpected connections.

By the Glow of the Jukebox: The Americans List".

On April 23 is the birthday of

Jason Eskenazi, American photographer born in Queens, New York, based in Brooklyn.
The majority of his photography is from the countries of the former Soviet Union, including his book Wonderland: A Fairy Tale of the Soviet Monolith (2008), an extensive documentary project in Russia and the former Soviet Union between 1991 and 2001.
Eskenazi received the Dorothea Lange/Paul Taylor Prize and a Guggenheim Fellowship, both in 1999. Wonderland won first place in a book award from Pictures of the Year International in 2008.
He attended Bayside High School then studied psychology and American literature at Queens College. Whilst at Queens College he was photo editor for the yearbook, assisted photographers on assignment and worked as a freelance photographer for the Queens Tribune.

His first trips were to Romania (for its first democratic election) and to Germany, then Russia in 1991 just before the August coup that marked the end of the Soviet Union.
From 2008 to 2009 Eskenazi worked as a security guard at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. During this time, he worked as a guard for the exhibition Looking In: Robert Frank's The Americans, which allowed him a lot of time to study and be inspired by Robert Frank's photographs. Also, Eskenazi asked renowned photographers and others he recognised visiting the exhibition what their favorite image from Frank's book The Americans was, and why. He edited the resulting notes and thoughts of 276 photographers into a book, By the Glow of the Jukebox: The Americans List.
