"Piaci kutya / Perro en el mercado / Dog at the Market", Kulon Progo, Java, 2014

On April 22 is the birthday of

Attila Bartis, Hungarian writer and photographer born in 1968 in Târgu Mureş in Transylvania, Romania.
His father, Ferenc Bartis, writer, journalist was dispossessed of Romanian nationality in 1984. The family moved to Budapest. Young Bartos studies photography. At 27, he publishes his first novel A séta ("Promenade"). The collection of short stories Kék pára ("Blue Fog") was published three years later. A Nyugalom ("Tranquility") is a great success which encourages Bartis to adapt to the theater under the title Anyám, Kléopátra ("Cleopatra, my mother"). He was an essayist for Élet és Irodalom ("Life and Literature") for a year. He published the serials of this period under the title Lázár apokrifek ("The apocrypha of Lazarus").
Over the past 30 years his attention as an artist has been drawn – in complementary fashion – both to the practice of writing (the expression of thoughts on paper) and to the making of pictures (the capturing of visible moments). The associations engendered by pictures and the principles arising from the editing of the various photographic series are recognisable in his prose. It is no accident that the figure of the photographer appears repeatedly in his novels and dramatic works; Bartis’s heroes often take a camera in hand and share with the reader the thought-motives and dilemmas of producing photographs.

"Óriásplakát éjjel / Póster gigante por la noche / Giant Poster at Night", Taipei, Taiwan, 2014

If we examine how a writer’s imagination or the idea of a pictorial composition determines the finished work, then a possible answer to this is the artist’s experiencing of his own duality. As a writer, he puts down on paper stories and cause-effect sequences with the aim of engendering new thoughts in the mind of the reader, but as a photographer the opposite is the case: with his camera, he seeks out, not events, but rather situations, forms and motifs. Still, the effect of his pictures reveals connections that are novel and often unexpected even from his own perspective, as if reality were a mechanism operating according to its own laws. Thus, whereas during the writing process the surprise factor can claim no special role, for the photographer the associations and tension triggered by a picture may well hold unexpected connections.

By the Glow of the Jukebox: The Americans List".

On April 23 is the birthday of

Jason Eskenazi, American photographer born in Queens, New York, based in Brooklyn.
The majority of his photography is from the countries of the former Soviet Union, including his book Wonderland: A Fairy Tale of the Soviet Monolith (2008), an extensive documentary project in Russia and the former Soviet Union between 1991 and 2001.
Eskenazi received the Dorothea Lange/Paul Taylor Prize and a Guggenheim Fellowship, both in 1999. Wonderland won first place in a book award from Pictures of the Year International in 2008.
He attended Bayside High School then studied psychology and American literature at Queens College. Whilst at Queens College he was photo editor for the yearbook, assisted photographers on assignment and worked as a freelance photographer for the Queens Tribune.

His first trips were to Romania (for its first democratic election) and to Germany, then Russia in 1991 just before the August coup that marked the end of the Soviet Union.
From 2008 to 2009 Eskenazi worked as a security guard at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. During this time, he worked as a guard for the exhibition Looking In: Robert Frank's The Americans, which allowed him a lot of time to study and be inspired by Robert Frank's photographs. Also, Eskenazi asked renowned photographers and others he recognised visiting the exhibition what their favorite image from Frank's book The Americans was, and why. He edited the resulting notes and thoughts of 276 photographers into a book, By the Glow of the Jukebox: The Americans List.

Luster has documented murder scenes in New Orleans and claims to be unaffected from visiting such places, but can be quoted describing some as possessed with energy and heat. Luster has produced more than 25,000 photographs in the last fifteen to twenty years focusing on old fashioned technology, particularly tintype, to produce a finish with an antique feel as part of the One Big Self project including inside work at Louisiana State Penitentiary. Some pieces include graffiti and poetry and were featured free for many weeks as part of Prospect. New Orleans city art event.
