Palani Mohan [Fotografía]

Cuando descubrí las fotografías de Palani Mohan quedé fascinado. Sus famosas imágenes de los cazadores Kazajos con sus águilas son realmente bellas, potentes y honestas, pero no es lo único que destaca en su obra. Cada serie de reportajes documentales conforma un conjunto en el cual es imposible encontrar material mediocre. Les dejo una selección basada en sus historias sobre los cazadores con águilas del oeste de Mongolia y los elefantes de la India, junto con algunos vistazos al resto de su obra.

When I discovered the photographs of Palani Mohan I was fascinated. His famous images of the Kazakhs hunters with their eagles are really beautiful, powerful and honest, but it is not the only thing that stands in his work. Each series of documentary reportage forms a whole in which it is impossible to find lackluster material. Here you have a selection based on his stories about the hunters with eagles in west Mongolia, and Indian elephants, along with some views at the rest of his work.

Nacido en la India, criado en Australia y actualmente viviendo en Hong Kong, la obra de Palani Mohan ha aparecido ampliamente en muchas de las principales publicaciones del mundo. Es autor de cuatro libros y ha finalizado su quinto, sobre los cazadores con águilas de Mongolia, que se publicó en septiembre de 2015. Su obra forma parte de la colección de la National Portrait Gallery de Londres, y sus imágenes se han mostrado por todo el globo, incluyendo la prestigiosa Visa Pour L'Image en Perpignan, Francia. Ha sido reconocido con premios tales como el World Press Photo, Picture of the Year International, CHIPP, Communication Arts y Sony International.

«Comencé como fotógrafo de un periódico en Australia, haciendo de todo, desde deportes a noticias. Fui fotógrafo de deportes durante muchos años, y la conservación es algo que llevo muy dentro. Es algo que veía en mi entorno y me impulsó hacia la fotografía. He hecho mucho trabajo con elefantes, águilas y camellos, y adoro estar en la naturaleza. Parecía algo en lo que encajaba bien y creo que es algo importante para fotografiar. Hay cosas que siento que son importantes para mí y también importantes para el mundo.»

«Cuando tenía 17 años, trabajando para el Sydney Morning Herald como fotógrafo, vi mi primera fotografía de un cazador con águilas Kazajo. Era una imagen en blanco y negro en un periódico, y la he recordado muy bien durante mucho tiempo. Nunca la he olvidado. Décadas después, cuando ya vivía en Hong Kong, tuve la gran oportunidad de disponer de tiempo y pensé en este proyecto, y simpremente fui y lo hice. Realmente no sabía lo que estaba intentando hacer. Quería tomar algunos retratos, pero en verdad no sabía de qué iba el asunto.»

«Este proyecto lo he fotografiado a lo largo de cinco años, y trata sobre los últimos 50 o 60 auténticos cazadores con águilas que quedan en la zona noroccidental de Mongolia, en la frontera entre Rusia, China, Mongolia y Kazakhstan. Fui allí varias veces para visitar a esas gentes, y viví con ellos durante un tiempo. Definitivamente, es una de las cosas más duras que he hecho como fotógrafo, porque las temperaturas con las que tuve que lidiar y las dificultades, no porque yo tuviera frío, sino porque mi cámara realmente me hizo pasar malos momentos.»

La caza tiene lugar en invierno, cuando las temperaturas se desploman hasta los 40º bajo cero. Las aves se transportan envueltas en unas fajas que según los cazadores las mantienen a la vez cálidas y tranquilas. El fuerte vínculo entre el cazador y el águila se ve reforzado por la cantidad de tiempo que pasan juntos. Los viajes de cacería pueden durar muchos días, con el cazador y águila trapando hasta una cresta de la montaña para obtener una buena vista del paisaje. Una vez que la presa - por lo general un zorro - es descubierto, los cazadores cargan hacia ella para sacarla a campo abierto. Luego sueltan el águila para hacer la matanza. Los cazadores usan tradicionalmente abrigos hechos con las pieles de la presa de su águila ha capturado.

Hunting takes place in winter, when temperatures can plummet to minus 40 degrees Farenheit. The birds are carried in swaddling, which the hunters claim keeps them both warm and calm. The strong bond between hunter and eagle is strengthened by the amount of time they spend together. Hunting trips can last many days, as the hunter and eagle trek up to a mountain ridge to obtain a good view across the landscape. Once the prey – usually a fox – is spotted, the hunter charges towards it to flush it into the open, then releases the eagle to make the kill. Hunters traditionally wear fur coats made from the skins of the prey their eagle has caught.

Elefantes de Asia / Elephants of Asia

Mientras que su pariente africano prospera, la población de elefantes asiáticos es de menos de 40.000. Anteriormente sólo en Tailandia había más de 100.000. Mohan ha viajado a lo largo y ancho del hábitat del elefante en Asia, cubriendo 11 países en 6 años.

While its relative in Africa flourishes, the elephant population of Asia numbers less than 40,000. Previously Thailand alone had over 100,000. Mohan traveled the length and breadth of Asian elephant's habitat, covering 11 countries in 6 years.

¿Podrías ofrecer 5 consejos esenciales para un fotógrafo de naturaleza?

- Ten paciencia.

- Piensa en lo que estás haciendo y por qué.

- No te dejes arrastrar por el Photoshop y las aplicaciones.

- Pasa tu tiempo con las imágenes en la cámara, no en el ordenador. Los jueces verán las fotografías y en dos segundos se darán cuenta de lo que has hecho. Intenta ser auténtico para fotografiar ya que, después de todo, eres un fotógrafo, no un artista digital.

- Investiga y pasa tiempo con la gente y animales que vas a fotografiar. Si lo haces, obtendrás mejores resultados.

Indian born, Australian raised, and now living in Hong Kong, Palani Mohan’s work has been widely published by many of the world’s leading publications. He is the author of four books and has just completed his fifth, on the Eagle Hunters of Mongolia, which was published in September 2015. His work is part of the collection of the National Portrait Gallery in London and his images have been shown widely around the globe including at the prestigious Visa Pour L’Image in Perpignan, France. He has been recognized with awards including World Press Photo, Picture of the Year International, CHIPP, Communication Arts, and Sony International.

«I started off as a newspaper photographer in Australia, I did everything from sport to news. I was a sports photographer for many years and conservation is something that I fell into. It was something that I saw all around me, and it moved me as a photographer. I've done a lot of work with elephants, eagles and camels and I love being out in nature. It seemed like a good fit to me and it seems that it is an important thing to photograph. They are things that we feel are important and important to the world too.»

«When I was seventeen years old, working for the Sydney Morning Herald as a photographer I saw my first photograph of a Kazakh Eagle Hunter. It was a black and white image in a Newspaper and I remember that image really well from a very long time ago and I never forgot that image. Decades later when I was living in Hong Kong I was a great opportunity for me to have some time and I thought about this project and I just went off and did it. I didn't really know what I was trying to do. I wanted to take some portraits but I didn't really know what the story was.»

«This project was a five-year project that I shot, It's really around the last remaining fifty ot sixty of the true eagle hunters left on the very north west edge of Mongolia, on the Russian-China-Mongolia-Kazakhstan border, and it's take me five years to do. I went there many times to visit these guys and I lived with them for quite a bit of time. Is definitely one of the hardest things I've had to do as a photographer because the temperatures I had to deal with and the difficulties not 'cause I was so cold, 'cause my camera it was compeltely giving me a really hard time.»

«I met this amazing man called Ozah Khan, and he was the oldest and the greatest of all eagles hunters. Is 94 years old. Meeting him has a huge impact on me and the project because I learned so much from what was truly happening to the eagles hunters, the environment, the eagles, and the foxes, the wolves, everything else through him. Whenever I felt like It was not going well or giving up, when I met him, spoke to him about it he gave me... it was like a big injection of confidence in my arms. He was the anchor of my book really. There are a couple of photographs of him in the book, but everythings plays really around about his thoughts and his advices, his guidance of what I should be looking for.»

Luchadores Kushti / The Kushti Wrestlers

Desde que los luchadores indios llevaron medallas a casa en los juegos olímpicos de 2008 en Beijing, la mirada se ha vuelto hacia el Kushti, un arte marcial con 3000 años de antigüedad que se practica en pequeños reductos de India, Pakistán e Irán. El Kushti es una reliquia de las tradiciones comunes Aryan, con un rico patrimonio moral, ético, filosófico y místico. Su ascendencia es la del guerrero y se le menciona en el registro histórico de Partia, que prevaleció como imperio desde 132 A.C. hasta el 226 D.C., una espina en el costado de Roma hasta que fue vencido en épocas del emperador Marco Aurelio. Pero para entonces el Kushti se había extendido por todo el imperio. Podría decirse que es el antecedente del más reconocido estilo de lucha greco-romana.

Since India’s wrestlers took home medals from the 2008 Olympic games in Beijing, the spotlight has been turned on Kushti, a 3,000-year-old martial art still practiced in small pockets of India, Pakistan and Iran. Kushti is a relic of shared Aryan traditions and with a rich moral, ethical, philosophical and mystical heritage. Its ancestry is that of the warrior and it finds mention in the historical record of Parthia, which prevailed as an empire from 132BCE-226CE, a thorn in the side of Rome until vanquished in the time of Emperor Marcus Aurelius. But by then Kushti had spread throughout the empire; it is arguably the antecedent of the more recognized Greco-roman style.

Do you have 5 essential tips for a nature photographer?

* Patience.

* Think about what you're doing and why.

* Don't get carried away with Photoshop and Apps.

* Spend your time getting the image right in camera, not on the computer. Judges will look at pictures and within two seconds, realise what you have done. Try to keep true to photography as after all, you are a photographer not a digital artist.

* Do research and spend time with the people and the animals you are going to photograph, if you do that, you will get a better result.

El 20 de Junio es el cumple de

Fernell Franco, fotógrafo colombiano nacido en 1942.

Su interés por la fotografía surgió cuando en 1963 entró a trabajar como mensajero de un estudio fotográfico, lo que le llevó a comprarse una cámara y empezar a hacer fotografías de actos sociales.

Un año después empezó a trabajar como asistente y a colaborar con el periódico El País de Cali. En 1965 entró a trabajar en el diario Occidente dedicándose a la fotografía de prensa hasta que en 1970 decidió dedicarse a la fotografía publicitaria. En 1973 fue nombrado director de fotografía de la Revista Cromos en Bogotá con la que realizó diversos trabajos, pero que pronto abandonó.

Serie "Amarrados" / Bound Series, principios de los '80 / early 1980s

Franco concibió la serie Amarrados en los mercados callejeros de Colombia y otros países de latinoamérica desde la década de los '80 en adelante, presentando objetos atados y objetos inanimados aislados, utilizados habitualmente por vendedores informales para proteger su mercancía. Las imágenes de Franco están huérfanas de presencia humana, transmitiendo una sensación de muerte, soledad, violencia, abandono y misterio /

Franco conceived the Bound series in street markets in Colombia and other countries of Latin America from 1980s onwards, featuring wrapped up devices and isolated inanimate objects typically used by informal vendors to protect their merchandise. Franco’s images are devoid of human presence conveying death, solitude, violence, abandonment, and mystery.

En 1976 recibió el primer premio en el Salón de Artistas de Colombia, por dos fotografías de una serie que tituló como "Interiores"; otras series que ha realizado han sido "Demoliciones" y "Álbumes de la ciudad". Entre los premios que obtuvo se encuentran el obtenido en la Primera Bienal de Arte de La Habana en 1984 y el Premio Colombiano de Fotografía en 2001.

En 1972 realizó una exposición con una serie de fotografías sobre las prostitutas de la ciudad de Cali que a título póstumo se ha revisado para participar en PHotoEspaña de 2011. Parte de esta serie forma parte de la colección del Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía.

Murió en 2006.

El 22 de Junio es el cumple de

Jesse Kalisher, fotógrafo artístico estadounidense nacido en 1962.

Apenas tenía seis años de edad cuando recibió su primera cámara. Fue un regalo de cumpleaños de su padre, el fotógrafo Simpson Kalisher. Aunque Jesse fue criado por su madre, Ilse, trabajó con Simpson en el cuarto oscuro y más tarde le sirvió como asistente.

A pesar de su temprano interés por la fotografía, Kalisher se embarcó en una larga carrera de una década en marketing y publicidad. Durante un viaje a Vietnam redescubrió su pasión por la fotografía, que le impulsó por el camino a una nueva carrera como fotógrafo artístico.

Además su obra se ha expuesto en numerosas galerías y varios museos, incluyendo el Museo de Oakland en California y el Museo Field de Chicago.

Esta toma surgió cuando me llevé a los chicos de paseo por el parque y pasamos por la Fuente Bethesda. Allí había un artista callejero que estaba enseñando a la gente a hacer burbujas del tamaño de una persona.

Mis hijos, de 6 y 4 años por aquél entonces, se me unieron y tomé unas cuantas fotos de ellos haciendo esas cosas gigantes. Cuando Jordan y Tamara estaban saciados, les pedí que se sentaran a un lado por un momento mientras trabajaba la escena buscando algunas imágenes para mí. Entonces fue cuando me di cuenta de que tenía una burbuja lo bastante grande, con la luz pasando en la dirección correcta, y una pareja de paseantes que podía captar en la posición correcta... y voilá... presto, este fue el resultado /

This shot came about when I took the kids for a walk through the park and past The Bethesda Fountain. There, we happened upon a street performer who was teaching people how to make human-size bubbles.

My kids, 6 & 4 at the time, joined in and I had fun grabbing snapshots of them making and chasing these giant creations. When Jordan and Tamar had their fill, I asked them to sit on the sideline for a bit while I worked the scene looking for a few images for me. That’s when I realized that if I just had bubble large enough, with the light passing in the right direction and a couple of passers-by that I could capture in the right position…. voila… presto, and here’s the result.

El 23 de Junio es el cumple de

Jessica Dimmock, fotoperiodista documental nacida en 1978 con sede en Brooklyn, Nueva York.

Su obra más conocida, "El noveno piso", documentó las vidas de un grupo de jóvenes consumidores de heroína a lo largo de varios años.

Dimmock es graduada del programa de fotografía documental y fotoperiodismo en el Centro Internacional de Fotografía de 2005. Ella fotografía regularmente para las revistas New York Times, Fortune, Newsweek y otras de Estados Unidos. Su perfil se ha publicado en New York Magazine, Aperture, Photo District News y la revista British Journal of Photography. Es miembro de la Agencia de Fotos VII.

"El noveno piso / The Ninth Floor", 2004-2007

Jesse y Mike alquilan una habitación de hotel por tres horas en Williamsborough, Brooklyn. Aunque Jesse ha intentado mantenerse sobria viviendo con sus padres en el norte de Nueva York, continúa recayendo cuando vuelve a Manhattan /

Jesse and Mike rent a hotel room for three hours in Williamsburg, Brooklyn. Although Jesse has been attempting sobriety by living with her parents in upstate New York, she continues to relapse by coming to Manhattan and using.

Comenzó su proyecto "El noveno piso" a finales de 2004 en Manhattan. Un distribuidor de drogas notó su cámara, se le acercó en la calle y la invitó a tomar fotografías de él. Se llevó a Dimmock a un edificio en el distrito Flatiron, donde Dimmock pasó ocho meses fotografiando a los aproximadamente 30 adictos a la heroína que compartían un apartamento. En junio de 2005, los propietarios de la vivienda desalojados los adictos, pero Dimmock continuó fotografiando a dos de las parejas durante más de dos años después del desalojo. El proyecto fue publicado como video y como libro en 2007.

El 24 de Junio es el cumple de

Erazm Ciołek, reportero gráfico polaco nacido en Łódź en 1937, autor de numerosas exposiciones y ganador de varios premios. Se le considera el principal fotógrafo del movimiento Solidaridad.

En 1957, se matriculó en la Facultad de Sociología de la Universidad de Varsovia, pero nunca se graduó. En cambio empezó con la fotografía y el periodismo gráfico. Trabajó para la revista Polityka y la Agencia de Prensa Polaca (PAP).

Ciołek estuvo presente en el movimiento de la solidaridad desde su inicio, documentando los tumultuosos acontecimientos de la década de 1980 en Polonia. Tenía acceso a las reuniones secretas de la Solidaridad y tomó imágenes siendo el único fotógrafo presente.

Fotografió a los trabajadores en huelga en el astillero de Gdansk, la reunión secreta de la oposición anticomunista durante la ley marcial en Polonia, las manifestaciones de Solidaridad, la peregrinación de Juan Pablo II a Polonia, la vida en la Parroquia de San Estanislao Kostka en Varsovia, donde trabajaba el sacerdote mártir Jerzy Popiełuszko y el entierro de Grzegorz Przemyk, estudiante de secundaria polaco asesinado por las fuerzas de seguridad comunistas en 1983.

Después de la caída del comunismo en 1989, trabajó para Ciołek Gazeta Wyborcza.

Además de ser un fotógrafo de Solidaridad, Ciołek tomó fotos de viajes en Nepal, Nicaragua y Cuba. También fue el primer fotógrafo en Polonia en cubrir la subcultura de los drogadictos.

Ciołek se distinguió por sus trabajos con muchos premios. En 2006, el presidente Lech Kaczynski le concedió la Cruz de Caballero de la Orden de Polonia Restituta.

Murió en 2012.

El 25 de Junio es el cumple de

Mark Shaw (Mark Schlossman), fotógrafo de moda y celebridades estadounidense durante los años 1950 y 1960.

Nació en 1921 en Nueva York, y trabajó para la revista Life en 1952-1968, tiempo durante el cual 27 ediciones de la vida llevaron fotos de portada tomadas por él. Los trabajos de de Shaw también aparecieron en Esquire, Harper 's Bazaar, Mademoiselle y muchas otras publicaciones.

Es conocido por sus fotografías de John F. Kennedy, su esposa Jacqueline Kennedy y sus hijos, Caroline y John F. Kennedy, Jr. En 1964, muchas de estas imágenes fueron publicadas en el libro "Los Kennedys: Una álbum de familia", que se convirtió en un éxito de ventas.

Murió en 1969.

Jerry Schatzberg, fotógrafo y director de cine estadounidense nacido en 1927. Fotografió para revistas como Vogue, Esquire y McCalls.

"Miloš Forman", 1966

Hizo su debut como director de largometrajes con "Puzzle of a Downfall Child" protagonizada por Faye Dunaway en 1970. On June 20 is the birthday of

Fernell Franco, Colombian photographer born in 1942.

His interest in photography started when in 1963 he went to work as a messenger of a photo studio, which led him to buy a camera and start taking pictures of social events. A year later he began working as an assistant and to collaborate with the newspaper El País of Cali. In 1965 he went to work in the Occidente newspaper dedicated to daily press photography, until he decided to engage in advertising photography in 1970. In 1973 he was named director of photography Cromos Magazine in Bogotá with which he did various jobs, but he soon left.

In 1976 he received the first prize in the Salon of Artists of Colombia, with two photographs of a series titled as "Interiors"; other series that has made have been "Demolitions" and "Album of the city." He received several awards as the one at the First Biennial of Art in Havana in 1984 and the Colombian Prize for Photography in 2001.

In 1972 he held an exhibition with a series of photographs of prostitutes in the city of Cali, posthumously revised to participate in PHotoEspaña 2011. Part of this series is part of the collection of the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía.

He died in 2006.

Jesse Kalisher, American art photographer born in 1962.

He was barely six years old when he received his first camera. It was a birthday gift from his father, the photographer Simpson Kalisher. Although Jesse was raised by his mother Ilse, he worked with Simpson in the darkroom and later served as his assistant.

Despite his early interest in photography, Kalisher embarked on a decade long career in marketing and advertising. During a trip to Vietnam, Kalisher rediscovered his passion for photography, propelling him down the path to a new career as a fine art photographer.

Kalisher's photography is featured in the permanent collections of museums such as the Louvre, The Smithsonian, The George Eastman House, The M. H. de Young Memorial Museum of San Francisco, The Museum of Fine Arts Houston, and many more. The first photographs of Barack Obama acquired by the Smithsonian were Kalisher's. Additionally, his photography has been exhibited in numerous galleries and several museums, including the Oakland Museum of California and Chicago's Field Museum.

Jessica Dimmock, documentary photojournalist born in 1978 based in Brooklyn, New York City.

Her most well-known body of work, The Ninth Floor, documented the lives of a group of young heroin users over the course of several years.

Dimmock is a 2005 graduate of the program in documentary photography and photojournalism at the International Center of Photography. She shoots regularly for the New York Times Magazine, Fortune, Newsweek and other U.S. magazines. She has been profiled in New York magazine, Aperture, Photo District News, and the British Journal of Photography. She is a member of VII Photo Agency.

She began her "Ninth Floor" project in late 2004 in Manhattan. A drug dealer noticed her camera, approached her on the street, and invited her to take photographs of him. He led Dimmock to a building in the Flatiron District, where Dimmock spent eight months photographing the approximately 30 heroin addicts who shared an apartment. In June 2005, the owners of the apartment evicted the addicts, but Dimmock continued to photograph two of the couples for more than two years after the eviction. The project was published as a video and as a book in 2007.

Erazm Ciołek, Polish photojournalist born in Łódź in 1937, author of many exhibitions and laureate of various awards. He is considered as the main photographer of the Solidarity movement.

Ciołek was born in Łódź. In 1957, he enrolled at the Faculty of Sociology of the University of Warsaw, but he never graduated. He started to be an active journalist and photographer instead. He worked for Polityka magazine and the Polish Press Agency.

Ciołek was present in the Solidarity movement from its beginning, documenting the tumultuous events of the 1980s in Poland. He had access to the secret meetings of the Solidarity and shot his pictures as the sole photographer there.

He photographed the striking workers at the Gdańsk Shipyard; secretive meeting of the anti-communist opposition during the martial law in Poland; Solidarity demonstrations; John Paul II's pilgrimage to Poland; life in the Parish of St. Stanisław Kostka in Warsaw where the martyr priest Jerzy Popiełuszko worked and the funeral of Grzegorz Przemyk, Polish high school student murdered by the communist security forces in 1983.

After the fall of communism in 1989, Ciołek worked for Gazeta Wyborcza daily.

As well as being a Solidarity photographer, Ciołek took travel photos in Nepal, Nicaragua and Cuba. He was also the first photographer in Poland to cover the subculture of drug addicts.

Ciołek was distinguished for his works with many awards. In 2006, President Lech Kaczyński awarded him the Knight's Cross of the Order of Polonia Restituta.

He died in 2012.

Mark Shaw, American fashion and celebrity photographer in the 1950s and 1960s.

He was born in 1921n New York, and worked for Life magazine from 1952 to 1968, during which time 27 issues of Life carried cover photos by Shaw. Shaw's work also appeared in Esquire, Harper's Bazaar, Mademoiselle, and many other publications. He is best known for his photographs of John F. Kennedy, his wife Jacqueline Kennedy, and their children, Caroline and John F. Kennedy, Jr. In 1964, many of these images were published in the book The John F. Kennedys: A Family Album, which became a bestseller.

He died in 1969.

Today, June 26, is the birthday of

Jerry Schatzberg, American photographer and film director born in 1927.

He photographed for magazines such as Vogue, Esquire and McCalls. He made his debut as a feature film director with 1970's Puzzle of a Downfall Child starring Faye Dunaway. He went on to direct films such as The Panic in Needle Park, which starred Al Pacino in 1971, Scarecrow, which shared the grand prize at the 1973 Cannes Film Festival, The Seduction of Joe Tynan, Honeysuckle Rose with Willie Nelson, Misunderstood (based on a novel by Florence Montgomery) and Street Smart in 1987 which earned Morgan Freeman his first Oscar Nomination.

He was a member of the jury at the 2004 Cannes Film Festival.

As a still photographer, one of Schatzberg's most famous images was the cover photo of the Bob Dylan album Blonde on Blonde, released in 1966. A collection of Schatzberg's images of Dylan was published by Genesis Publications in 2006, titled Thin Wild Mercury. Schatzberg still resides in New York City, where he is working on several film projects, including a sequel to "Scarecrow," co-written with Bruce Springsteen's former Publicist, Seth Cohen.
