On January 11 is the birthday of
Adam Frans (Adam-François) van der Meulen, Flemish painter and draughtsman born in 1632 in Brussels, who was particularly known for his scenes of military campaigns and conquests. He also painted portraits, hunting scenes, paintings of chateaux and landscapes. He created designs for prints and cartoons for tapestries.
He worked in the service of the French king Louis XIV of France for whom he painted his victories, his new possessions and portraits. He was instrumental in building the propagandistic image of the French king as the 'Sun King'. His battle scenes had an important influence on the development on the genre of military painting in France.
He died in 1690.

On January 12 is the birthday of
Okada Saburōsuke (岡田 三郎助), Japanese painter in the Yōga style born in 1869 in the Saga Prefecture, Japan. he was a Professor at the "Tōkyō Bijutsu Gakkō" (School of Fine Arts); precursor of the Tokyo University of the Arts.
Okada's painting subjects included both landscapes and portraits, and he was especially good at painting portraits of women. Under his brush, women were portrayed with warm skin textures, elegant features, and delicate traits.
He died in 1939.

On January 13 is the birthday of
Antonietta Brandeis (also known as Antonie Brandeisova and Antonio Brandeis), Czech-born (Galicia, 1848) Italian landscape, genre and portrait painter, as well as a painter of religious subjects for altarpieces.
It was in Venice at the Academy that Brandeis perfected her skills as a meticulous landscape and cityscape painter, with intricate and luminous details in the tradition of the eighteenth-century “vedutisti”. During the years 1878 to 1893 Brandeis painted and exhibited numerous works, primarily scenes of Venice, and although she resided chiefly in that city she also traveled and painted in Verona, Bologna, Florence, and Rome.
She died in 1926.

On January 14 is the birthday of
Berthe Marie Pauline Morisot, French painter born in 1841 in Bourges, Cher, and a member of the circle of painters in Paris who became known as the Impressionists. She was described by Gustave Geffroy in 1894 as one of "les trois grandes dames" of Impressionism alongside Marie Bracquemond and Mary Cassatt.
In 1864, she exhibited for the first time in the highly esteemed Salon de Paris. Sponsored by the government, and judged by Academicians, the Salon was the official, annual exhibition of the Académie des beaux-arts in Paris. Her work was selected for exhibition in six subsequent Salons until, in 1874, she joined the "rejected" Impressionists in the first of their own exhibitions, which included Paul Cézanne, Edgar Degas, Claude Monet, Camille Pissarro, Pierre-Auguste Renoir, and Alfred Sisley. It was held at the studio of the photographer Nadar.
Morisot's mature career began in 1872. She found an audience for her work with Durand-Ruel, the private dealer, who bought twenty-two paintings. In 1877, she was described by the critic for Le Temps as the "one real Impressionist in this group." She chose to exhibit under her full maiden name instead of using a pseudonym or her married name. Walter Stöhrer, German painter born in 1937 in Stuttgart.
Between 1952 and 1954 he studied as a commercial graphical artist (Werbegraphiker), receiving a journeymans certificate. In 1955 he began to study painting at the Academy of Arts (Akademie der Bildenden Künste) in Karlsruhe and in 1957 became a member of the class of HAP Grieshaber, where he remained until 1959. In 1959 he left Karlsruhe for Berlin, to operate and live as free artist. In 1984 Stöhrer became a member of the Academy of the Arts in Berlin. Between 1981 and 1982 he was visiting professor at the Hochschule (now Universität) der Künste, the Berlin University of the Arts. In 1986 he obtained a chair at that same institution.
He died in 2000.

Gerta Overbeck, pintora alemana nacida en 1898 en Dortmund, representante de la Neue Sachlichkeit (Nueva Objetividad).
En 1915 comenzó su formación como docente de dibujo en Dusseldorf. De 1919 a 1922 asistió a la Kunstgewerbeschule Hannover. De 1922 a 1931 trabajó en Dortmund como maestra de dibujo en varias escuelas secundarias. Allí participó en 1931 en la 5ª Gran Exposición de Arte Westfalia. En mayo de 1932 23 de sus obras se exhibieron en la exposición "La Nueva Objetividad en Hannover". Gerta Overbeck, German painter born in 1898 in Dortmund, a representative of the Neue Sachlichkeit (New Objectivity).
In 1915 she began a drawing teacher training in Dusseldorf. From 1919 to 1922 she attended the Kunstgewerbeschule Hannover. From 1922 to 1931 she worked in Dortmund as a drawing teacher at various high schools. There she took part in 1931 at the 5th Great Westphalian Art Exhibition. In May 1932, 23 of her works were shown in the exhibition "Die Neue Sachlichkeit in Hannover". Politically Gerta Overbeck was close to the Communist Party and belonged to her for a short time.
Gerta Overbeck is considered to be an outstanding representative of New Objectivity painting. Some of her pictures have been rediscovered and fed into the art market.
She died in 1977.

Duane Hanson, American artist and sculptor born in 1925 in Mnnesota, based in South Florida. He was known for his lifecast realistic works of people, cast in various materials, including polyester resin, fibreglass, Bondo and bronze. His work is often associated with the Pop Art movement, as well as hyperrealism.

Albert Louis Aublet, French painter born in 1851 in Paris.
Trained in the workshops of Claudius Jacquand and Jean-Léon Gérôme, he exhibited successfully at the Salon in 1873, obtaining an honorable mention in 1879 and a third class medal in 1880. His international recognition is equally brilliant: he earned several awards in international events, including a gold medal at the 1889 World's Fair. He was distinguished with the Legion of Honor in 1890.
From his first trip in 1881, his discovery of the Orient has a strong influence on his artistic inspiration. His visit to Constantinople gave an orientalist direction to his paintings. The "Turkish woman in the baths" was a great success and contributed to her notoriety. He was the president of the Artists Society of Tunis.
He died in 1938.

John Luke, artista irlandés nacido en Belfast en 1906.
Estudió en el Belfast College of Art, donde destacó bajo la tutela de Seamus Stoupe y Newton Penpraze. On January 19 is the birthday of
John Luke, Irish artist born in Belfast in 1906.
He studied at the Belfast College of Art, where excelled under the tutelage of Seamus Stoupe and Newton Penpraze. In 1927 he won the coveted Dunville Scholarship which enabled him to attend the Slade School of Art in London, where he studied painting and sculpture under the celebrated Henry Tonks, who greatly influenced his development as a draughtsman. On leaving the Slade he stayed in London, intent on establishing himself in the art world.
He began to exhibit his work and in October 1930 showed two paintings, The Entombment and Carnival, in an exhibition of contemporary art held at Leger Galleries. The economic climate was deteriorating and a year later, at the end of 1933, he was driven back to Belfast by the recession. He remained in Belfast, apart from a time during the Second World War when he went to Killylea, County Armagh.
John Luke's painting technique was painstakingly slow, his manner precise. As an artist John Luke presented an enigmatic view to the world. Reserved by nature, he lived a very private life.
He died in 1975.
