Cris Alzualde [Pintura, dibujo, entrevista / Painting, Drawing, Interview]

A new interview by Shirley Rebuffo, this time with the Argentine artist Cris Alzualde. Using painting (oils and acrylics), drawing and mixed media, her body of work is structured in thematic series, in which she offers us her plastic vision of sport, bars and music. But the core of her current work is developed in a feminine key, with an outstanding presence of African women: "I feel the need to show their beauty, to reflect the strength they possess, to manifest that permanent joy that their faces show in spite of the difficult lives they have".

Cris con su obra / with her work "Ella Nyangatom"

Me comprometí muchísimo.

By talking with Cris, one discovers a confident and self-assured person on the path of art. Studious and disciplined in her search for opportunities to represent, she exposes with clarity and impetus what she wants, and believes in her projects.
Born in Buenos Aires, Argentina, from an early age her life was focused on the development of creativity from the plastic arts. At the age of eleven she began her painting studies with the Croatian artist Zarko Simat (Sid, Vojvodina, Serbia, 1909 - Buenos Aires, Argentina, 1985), continuing her higher studies at the National School of Fine Arts Prilidiano Pueyrredón in Buenos Aires.
Her preparation does not stop and she studies drawing with different internationally recognized artists like Salvador Russo Ferrán, the plastic artist Jorge Álvaro in the National School of Fine Arts Prilidiano Pueyrredón, Nicolás Menza, Martín Palottini and Ali Rosafioriti. Her drawings cover the human figure from the subtle to the grotesque with a solid base for drawing and a preference for the representation of characters, which makes her production an exquisite chronicle of manners. Throughout these years she has obtained prizes in different Salons and exhibited her work in National and International Galleries.

Shirley Rebuffo: How did your love for drawing, painting and art come about?
Cris Alzualde: I don't remember my days without working with my hands, nor with my imagination quiet. From a very young age, I have had my days in mind creating scenarios, objects, images. Everything was susceptible to being represented, any thought, a story, a moment.
I never doubted my future with a creative task and I traveled through my days like this, tirelessly seeking to add resources that would help me express my ideas. Between dance, music and piano lessons, drawing and painting gained the upper hand.
At the age of ten I began to study with a Croatian painter whose words I did not understand very well. We spoke the same language, but I only understood his indications about brushstrokes, shadows, palette and that impressionist language years later. Today I am grateful to see beyond the image and color. My first exhibition was at the Banco Popular Argentino in Buenos Aires. I was 11 years old and Zarko Simat opened this wonderful path of Art for me.
I always made a path in small workshops surrounded by great masters, until the National School of Fine Art Prilidiano, Art always surrounded my life.

SR: What do you think was your turning point, the change in your theme? Because your recent painting revolves around African women...
CA: Considering art as an expression, whatever that language may be, it's nothing more than the image, the sound, the movements of ourselves. That's why looking back we see ourselves, we show ourselves.
Since I was a very young girl, adolescent to adult, today with a family, children, a profession and different views of life through time, I think it is understandable those changes in the representations. To get into the themes that mobilize us, because surely an artist lives mobilized and with the need to shape it, to express it: those things change.
I think that when one looks for the commercial vein of art, one begins to corrupt oneself. For many years I have been thinking that this is what people like. One day I stopped and I said to myself: no, I'm going to do what I want. Researching, creating, rehearsing, everything led me to drawing, which is what I am passionate about.
After the presentation of an exhibition in the Argentine Chamber of Deputies of the series of women, "Turbants", where there were faces of African women, I came across "them". Without looking for it, just working on those paths that are opening up, I came to this project of African Women. I "discovered" then the faces, the figure of African women.

«I studied their history, past and present. I entered the world of Africa, its current reality, to see the continent from various points of view. I made a great commitment. I thought So I had to convey what is happening in Africa. I told myself that I had to pass it on in pencil and show it from my canvases.
From my humble pencil I can accompany and help to know how they live, trying to repair what is being damaged and add to it to improve the quality of life.
I feel the need to show their beauty, to reflect the strength they possess, to manifest that permanent joy that their faces show in spite of the difficult lives they have. The power to move forward, the motherhood they carry, the familiarity they share with each other as a community. So many things!
They are beautiful because of their passion, so are they, but they are the support of Africa wherever you look. Africa is a woman. That's the name of my project and wherever you look for a story, pretty, ugly, sad, passionate, resilient, there is a woman.
That's why, every time I went on with the study, I was more caught by the power of their communities, because they are like that, strong, they are intense and they are in everything.
I said to myself: I have to transmit this.
Of course, it was more and more what I wanted to tell. It is so much, so much that I wonder if I am going to be able to complete this project with so many ideas.
In fact, to reach the end of what I want to express, I am very far away, but I keep walking! My intention is to accompany».

"Dos copas / Two Glasses", óleo sobre tela / oil on canvas, 50 x 60 cm.

SR: Do you think that art does not have to be understood, but felt?
CA: From the artist's point of view it is nothing more than his own expression. If it is authentic and felt, it does not seek understanding.
From the viewer's point of view art must be felt, or not, nothing else. When one seeks explanation, logic, understanding, and theorizes from one's own point of view, I believe that a very internal manifestation of the artist can lose the most intrinsic emotion and sensations. I believe that we can only make an analysis from the plastic language, the resources that the artist used.

SR: Do you think that art has lost its social resonance today?
CA: No, not at all. The artist lives immersed in a society, in a temporal reality! Well, not always, but if we think about artistic movements, they are manifesting a social mood although they are different realities, that of each artist. The interest in pictorial works that do not relate to reality also reflects what some part of society needs.

Pintando perros / Painting Dogs (LXXVIII)

Anton Karinger
(Liubliana, Eslovenia / Ljubljana, Slovenia, 1829 - 1870)

"Pes / Un perro / A Dog", óleo sobre lienzo / oil on canvas, 58,2 x 68,8 cm., 1868
Galería Nacional Eslovena (Liubliana, Eslovenia / Ljubljana, Slovenia)

Anton Karinger was a Slovene painter and poet born in 1829 in Ljubljana. He was a pupil of Steinfeld in Vienna and is known for landscapes and seascapes, mostly views of Carinthia and the Adriatic coast.
Karinger fully dedicated himself to painting only after his military career had ended. In his works he often expressed different, mainly emotional, moods in nature, hence he is classified as a romantic landscape painter. He admired the high mountainous world only “from below” because he was not a mountaineer like Marko Pernhart. Karinger was the first to organize exhibitions of the artists’ society in Ljubljana. He was familiar with the inner life of modern man, so he included this aspect in his portraits, particularly those of his nearest and dearest.
His painting View of Mt. Triglav from Bohinj, along with other paintings of Mt. Triglav, became a symbol of the Carinthian Slovene people and is part of the core collection of the National Gallery of Slovenia.
He died in 1870.

"Bodegón de un banquete / Banquet Still Life"
Óleo sobre lienzo / oil on canvas, 185 × 242,5 cm., 1644

Adriaen van Utrecht was a Flemish painter born in 1599 in Antwerp, known mainly for his sumptuous banquet still lifes, game and fruit still lifes, fruit garlands, market and kitchen scenes and depictions of live poultry in farmyards.
His paintings, especially the hunting and game pieces, show the influence of Frans Snyders. The two artists are considered the main inventors of the genre of the pronkstillevens, i.e. still lifes that emphasized abundance by depicting a diversity of objects, fruits, flowers and dead game, often together with living people and animals. Van Utrecht also painted a number of flower still lifes. He was a regular collaborator with leading Antwerp painters who had been pupils or assistants of Peter Paul Rubens, such as Jacob Jordaens, David Teniers the Younger, Erasmus Quellinus II, Gerard Seghers, Theodoor Rombouts, Abraham van Diepenbeeck and Thomas Willeboirts Bosschaert.

Ferdinand Jacob Stoopendael
(Linköping, Suecia / Sweden, 1850 - Nueva York, EE.UU./ NY, USA, 1930)

Along with these three and Rudolf Widing, he was part of a group of bohemian artists who frequented the red dining room of the time, an environment that years later would be immortalized in August Strindberg's novel "The Red Room".
After working as a teacher in his own painting school, Ferdinand Stoopendael emigrated to New York in the 1890s. Very little is known about his career in the United States, but according to Georg Pauli, it seems that he "subsisted on painting portraits within the New York police.
He died in 1930.

Heinrich Johann von Zügel was a German painter born in 1850, who specialized in pictures of farm and domestic animals, often posed with a human in a dramatic or humorous situation.
Beginning in 1867, Zügel was a student at the art school in Stuttgart under Bernhard von Neher and Heinrich von Rustige, where he studied animal and genre painting. Two years later, he transferred to the Academy of Fine Arts Munich, but was not inspired by the teaching methods of Karl von Piloty and decided to work independently. Afterwards, he spent some time in Vienna and finally settled in Munich. Anton Braith became an important mentor for him there.
In the early 1880s, he was attracted to the rural scenery in the Dachau District and began to paint outdoors, placing his subjects in a broader landscape setting. Studies undertaken along the Dutch and Belgian coastline in the early 1890s confirmed his attraction to Impressionism, which he had encountered at exhibitions in Paris. From that point on, atmospheric reflections and the play of light and shadow were his primary concerns, while details were subordinated. This led him to become one of the founding members of the Munich Secession.
He spent over forty years on a theme he called "Heavy Work" (mostly portrayals of horses and oxen plowing) and produced over 24 canvases, which give a detailed picture of his artistic development. He continued to paint in a light, impressionistic style until he was in his eighties.
In 1895, he became a Professor at the Academy of Fine Arts Munich, a position he retained until his retirement in 1922.
He died in 1941.

Erwin Aichele
(Höhefeld, Main-Tauber-Kreis, Alemania / Germany, 1887 -
Eutingen, Stadt Pforzheim, 1974)

"Satsuma", óleo sobre lienzo / oil on canvas, 65,4 x 60,3 cm., 1933. Bonhams

Erwin Aichele was a German painter and animal artist born in Höhefeld in 1887.
He studied fine art at the State Academy of Fine Arts Karlsruhe. He continued his studies in the Academy of Fine Arts, Munich, where he was taught by the celebrated animal artist Heinrich von Zügel. In 1911, Aichele passed his art teaching diploma and started work at the jewelry school in Pforzheim, Southern Germany.
In 1915, Erwin Aichele joined the army and was sent to France as part of a communications team. His talent in draughtsmanship quickly came to the notice of his commanding officer and he was given the official function of war artist.
Most of his surviving war drawings were executed in 1916 when, as part of the Third Battery FAR 185, he was stationed in Liry in Champagne. In June 1916, the troops moved to northern France.
Although he witnessed the horrors of war, little of this appears in his drawings.
In the aftermath of the war, Erwin Aichele resumed his teaching activities at Pforzheim's jewelry school. He also began painting again, focusing on wildlife and the semi-domesticated animals he reared.
He worked in various media, including watercolours, oils, charcoal and pen and ink.
In the 1950s, he increasingly turned towards abstraction, though still using animals as his models. These paintings, mostly watercolours, remain his most celebrated works.
In 1931, Erwin, his wife, Marie Charlotte, and three children moved into their new home in the kuenstlerkolonie (artists colony) in the village of Eutingen, near Pforzheim.
The house had an adjoining atelier and animal enclosures. These allowed Aichele to keep all sorts of animals, which were to play an essential role in his life and work.
He died in 1974.
