Asonancias / Assonances (I)

I have always found interesting, enlightening, entertaining and revealing finding analogies between images. You will know who follow the blog and have seen the posts I published about lookalikes (here and here).
In this series, I intend to offer groups of images whose similarities are significant, either because they are copies, interpretations, or mere coincidences through which the inspiration or the collective unconscious have generated striking parallels.
I've collected many of these in a massive Russian photography blog that I recommend visiting to all the people interested. Others are the result of my own findings, and encourage those who find such material offering suggestions to include in this collection.
I will try, as always, to enrich the presentation with some information on the artists involved and / or the images produced.

Escuela de Fontainebleau / Fontainebleau School
"Gabrielle d'Estrées et une de ses sœurs / y una de sus hermanas / and One of Her Sisters"
Óleo sobre madera / oil on wood, 96 × 125 cm., 1594

The artist has made skillful use of the trompe-l'oeil technique, using an imitative, realistic style for on the sheet in the bath and the two curtains framing the scene. The trompe-l'oeil effect is accentuated by the view of what is taking place in the background room. Richly colored, unsettling in its presentation of two women in their bath, and mysterious in its use of symbol - the ring being shown by Gabrielle d'Estrées, for example - the sensuality of the painting made it a popular success. Sensuous yet marvelously delicate, the contours of the two naked bodies are highlighted by the lighting of the two women from the left and the contrast with the shadowy background.

The models have been identified as Gabrielle d'Estrées (1571-99), the favorite of Henry IV (1553-1610), and one of her sisters: the Duchess de Villars or Madame de Balagny. The oddly affectionate way in which the sister is pinching Gabrielle d'Estrées' right breast has often been taken as symbolizing the latter's pregnancy with the illegitimate child of Henry IV. This interpretation would seem to be confirmed by the scene of the young woman sewing - perhaps preparing a layette for the coming child - in the background. The picture was acquired by the Louvre in 1937.

Jeremy Deller
"Magia inglesa / English Magic", 2013. The Sandringham Estate, Norfolk, UK

English Magic has been conceived and created for the British Pavilion at the 55th International Art Exhibition – la Biennale di Venezia. The exhibition reflects the roots of much of Deller's work, focusing on British society - its people, icons, myths, folklore and its cultural and political history. He weaves together high and low, popular and rarefied to create unique and thought provoking work. English Magic addresses events from the past, present and an imagined future. Deller frames these instances in a way that is contemporary but also true to the original subject, weaving a narrative that is almost psychedelic; hovering delicately between fact and fiction, real and imagined.

Dirk Westphal is an artist born in the town of Schleswig, Germany on January 23, 1963. Dirk is the oldest of four children. From the navy officer father and mother a teacher and independent artist, which he would teach a child to paint and draw. Apart from this, their interests were sports, music and nature. The butterflies were his passion, the caught, the caring, raised and painted. After its passage by the army begins his studies in graphic design at the University of Applied Sciences (UAS) Dormunt. In 1991 will end with good grades and their study will marry Andrea, moving to Hamburg, where he currently resides as a freelance illustrator and independent. In 1992 and 1994 his two daughters were born. In addition to a wide variety of commercial and noncommercial pieces, performs a number of erotic paintings that were published in magazines, television and in small contributions exhibitions. Here’s how it comes into contact with customers and collectors of the fetish scene as well received encourages you to make your site devoted to eroticism.
His early paintings contained a clearly erotic style pop art. Adopts initially airbrush technique that both had a reputation among illustrators of the time. Struggling with this technique to achieve perfection, but its results failed to satisfy, it seemed too plain and unrealistic. For new illustrations always begins with a pencil sketch that traces the role developing a new composition with the help of a large number of photos. The box then takes shape in a long and scrupulous creative process, motivated by love of work and anticipated pleasure at the outcome. Watch on the original as a precious treasure that preserves much their qualities and abilities. His ambition is to remain faithful to its aesthetic principles and create tables with a classic aura. Their work is therefore prefer the example of classical painting to that of pin-ups or the art of fantasy.
