Ossip Zadkine (Yossel Aronovich Tsadkin, Иосель Аронович Цадкин), artist born in 1890 in the city of Vitsebsk, part of the Russian Empire (now Belarus) who lived in France. He is primarily known as a sculptor, but also produced paintings and lithographs.
After attending art school in London, Zadkine settled in Paris in 1910. He studied at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts for six months. In 1911 he lived and worked in La Ruche. While in Paris he joined the Cubist movement, working in a Cubist idiom from 1914 to 1925. He later developed his own style, one that was strongly influenced by African and Greek art.
Zadkine served as a stretcher-bearer in the French Army during World War I, and was wounded in action. He spent the World War II years in USA. His best-known work is probably the sculpture "The Destroyed City" (1951-1953), representing a man without a heart, a memorial to the destruction of the center of the Dutch city of Rotterdam in 1940 by the German Luftwaffe.
He died in 1967.

On July 15 is the birthday of

Jacek Malczewski, one of the most revered painters of Poland, associated with the patriotic Young Poland movement following the century of Partitions, born in 1854. He is regarded as father of Polish Symbolism. In his creative output, Malczewski combined the predominant style of his times, with the historical motifs of Polish martyrdom, the Romantic ideals of independence, the Christian and Greek traditions, folk mythology, as well as his love of natural environment.
During his childhood and early teen years he was greatly influenced by his father Julian, a Polish patriot and social activist who introduced him to the world of Romantic literature inspired by the November Uprising. Similarly, the beauty of Polish landscape and folklore had been awakened in him by Feliks Karczewski, his uncle and long-time guardian who invited future novelist Adolf Dygasiński to his estate, for Jacek's cognitive benefit.
Jacek Malczewski died in 1929.

On July 16 is the birthday of

Joseph Wilton, English sculptor born in 1722. He was one of the founding members of the Royal Academy in 1768, and the academy's third keeper. His works are particularly numerous memorialising the famous Britons in Westminster Abbey.
Wilton initially trained under Laurent Delvaux at Nivelles, in present day Belgium. In 1744 he left Nivelles and went to the Academy in Paris to study under Jean-Baptiste Pigalle. In 1752 he went to Italy with his sculptor friend Louis-François Roubiliac to learn to sculpt in marble, and stayed for seven years, living first in Rome and then in Florence.
While in Florence, Wilton also made the acquaintance of Florentine painter Giovanni Battista Cipriani, who accompanied him on his return to England in August 1755.
Once back in London, Wilton was named co-director of Lennox's Richmond House gallery, and established a workshop.
In 1761, he was first commissioned to produce a statue of King George III. Similar commissions followed.
He died in 1803.

On July 17 is the birthday of

Lyonel Charles Adrian Feininger, German-American painter born in 1871, and a leading exponent of Expressionism. He also worked as a caricaturist and comic strip artist. He was born and grew up in New York City, traveling to Germany at 16 to study and perfect his art. He started his career as a cartoonist in 1894 and met with much success in this area. He was also a commercial caricaturist for 20 years for magazines and newspapers in the USA and Germany. At the age of 36, he started to work as a fine artist. He also produced a large body of photographic works between 1928 and the mid 1950s, but he kept these primarily within his circle of friends. He was also a pianist and composer, with several piano compositions and fugues for organ extant.
He died in 1956.

Today, July 18, is the birthday of

François Hyacinthe Rigaud, French baroque painter of Catalan origin born in 1659, whose career was based in Paris.
He was trained in tailoring in his father's workshop but perfected his skills as a painter under Antoine Ranc at Montpellier from 1671 onwards, before moving to Lyon four years later. It was in these cities that he became familiar with Flemish, Dutch and Italian painting, particularly that of Rubens, Van Dyck, Rembrandt and Titian, whose works he later collected. Arriving in Paris in 1681, he won the prix de Rome in 1682, but on the advice of Charles Le Brun did not make the trip to Rome to which this entitled him. Received into the Académie royale de peinture et de sculpture in 1700, he rose to the top of this institution before retiring from it in 1735.
Since Rigaud's paintings captured very exact likenesses along with the subject's costumes and background details, his paintings are considered precise records of contemporary fashions.
He was one of the most important portrait painters during the reign of King Louis XIV. His instinct for impressive poses and grand presentations precisely suited the tastes of the royal personages, ambassadors, clerics, courtiers, and financiers who sat for him.
He died in 1743.
