El 13 de Julio es el cumple de
Erich Lessing, fotógrafo austríaco asociado con Magnum Photos nacidos en Viena en 1923.
Antes de terminar la escuela secundaria se vio obligado a abandonar Austria en 1939 a causa de la subida de Hitler al poder. Emigró a el Mandato Británico de Palestina (hoy Palestina Ocupada). Su madre permaneció en Viena y más tarde murió en Auschwitz. Mientras estuvo en la Palestina Ocupada, Lessing estudió en la universidad técnica de Haifa y luego realizó trabajos agrícolas en un kibutz. Más tarde se unió al ejército británico como fotógrafo y aviador.
Después de la Segunda Guerra Mundial, Lessing regresó a Austria en 1947 y se unió a la agencia Associated Press. David Seymour invitó a Lessing a unirse a Magnum Photos en 1951 y Lessing se convirtió en miembro de pleno derecho en 1955. El 14 de Julio es el cumple de
Leonid Nikolaevich Lazarev (Леонид Николаевич Лазарев), notable fotógrafo y fotoperiodista ruso nacido en 1937.
En 1957 ganó el segundo premio del concurso de fotografía del Festival de la Juventud y los Estudiantes de Moscú. A partir de ahí decidió convertirse en un fotógrafo profesional.
Desde entonces ha ganado muchos premios fotografía. En 1964 trabajó como reportero gráfico en una revista "Krugozor".
En 1974 ganó un premio de un concurso internacional de la revista "Nuevo Tiempo". Desde entonces ha presentado su obra en numerosas exposiciones.
El 15 de Julio es el cumple de
Virxilio Viéitez Bértolo, fotógrafo español nacido en Forcarey en 1930.
Comenzó a trabajar en la construcción con dieciséis años y emigró a Cataluña. En Palamós conoció a Julio Pallí que le enseñó el oficio de la fotografía.
Con él se inició como fotógrafo en la Costa Brava haciendo retratos a los turistas. En 1955 regresó a Galicia y poco después abrió un estudio fotográfico en su pueblo natal. Allí tuvo ocasión de retratar a muchas generaciones de vecinos de la Tierra de Montes de forma casi anónima.
Sus fotografías son retratos de personas y grupos en actos sociales como comuniones, velatorios o bautizos, pero también en actividades cotidianas.
La mayoría de sus fotos son en blanco y negro, aunque en los años setenta realizó alguna en color.
Abandonó la actividad fotográfica en los años ochenta, pero en los noventa su obra fue revalorizada protagonizando la representación de la fotografía gallega en la VIII edición de la Fotobienal de Vigo en 1998 y después en el Museo de Arte Contemporánea MARCO, en la Sala de Exposiciones Caixanova de Vigo, en la exposición "150 años de fotografía en España" seleccionada por Publio López Mondéjar que estuvo en La Coruña y Orense, en la muestra Al gust de Cartier-Bresson en Barcelona, en Ámsterdam y en Nueva York.
Murió en 2008.

Louis Victor Emmanuel Sougez, fotógrafo y crítico fotográfico francés nacido en Burdeos en 1889.
Estudió en la Escuela de Bellas Artes de la ciudad iniciando su actividad profesional como pintor. En torno a 1912 se dedicó en exclusiva a la fotografía y completó su formación en diversas empresas de Alemania y Suiza. En 1920 comenzó a trabajar como fotógrafo independiente y en 1926 fue el fundador del servicio fotográfico del periódico L'Illustration.
Defendió la fotografía artística rechazando la fotografía pictórica y defendiendo los principios de la Nueva Objetividad considerando la fotografía como un arte autónomo. Sus primeras fotografías tenían como tema principal la naturaleza muerta y el desnudo empleando una estética austera y puramente fotográfica.
Murió en 1972.
El 17 de Julio es el cumple de
Charles Marville, seudónimo de Charles François Bossu, fotógrafo francés nacido en 1813, que fotografió principalmente arquitectura, paisajes y el entorno urbano. Utilizó tanto negativos de papel como vidrio. Es conocido por tomar fotografías de antiguos barrios parisinos antes de que fueran destruidos y reconstruidos bajo la "Haussmannization", el nuevo plan del Barón Haussmann para la modernización de París. En 1862, fue nombrado fotógrafo oficial de la ciudad.
A partir de 1850 Marville comenzó a hacer fotografías. Joshua Lutz, artista estadounidense que trabaja con fotografía de gran formato y vídeo. Realizó su primera exposición individual en la Galería Gitterman durante el verano de 2004.
En 2008 powerHouse Books publicó el primer libro de Lutz, "Meadowlands". En el otoño de 2008 Lutz presentó una exposición individual para la serie de Meadowlands en ClampArt Gallery, en la ciudad de Nueva York.
2013 vio el lanzamiento de "Hesitating Beauty", una serie de fotografías que revelan un lado diferente de la obra de Lutz, contando la historia muy personal de su madre. La narrativa del libro también acompaña cuidadosa y pensativamente el tema generalmente sensible de la enfermedad mental.

Hamilton ha publicado tres libros de poesía, Body Rain (Brick Books 1992) y Steam-Cleaning Love (Brick Books 1993), "Love Will Burst into a Thousand Shapes" (Caitlin Press, 2014), un librito de poesía ("Going Santa Fe", ganador del premio Chapbook de Poesía de la Liga de Poetas canadienses) y dos volúmenes de ficción "July Nights and Other Stories", (Douglas y McIntyre, 1991) y "Hunger", (Oberon, 2001), y otros dos libros (y no ficción de los niños). On July 13 is the birthday of
Erich Lessing, Austrian photographer associated with Magnum Photos born in Viena in 1923.
Before completing high school he was forced to leave Austria in 1939 because of Hitler's rise to power. He immigrated to the British Mandate for Palestine (now Occupied Palestine). His mother remained in Vienna and later died at Auschwitz. While in Occupied Palestine Lessing studied at Haifa's technical college and then worked agricultural jobs on kibbutzim. He then joined the British Army as a photographer and aviator.
After World War II, Lessing returned to Austria in 1947 and joined the Associated Press. David Seymour invited Lessing to join Magnum Photos in 1951 and Lessing became a full member in 1955. His photographs were published by such magazines as Life, Paris Match, Picture Post, EPOCA and Quick. He documented politics in post-war Europe, especially in Communist countries.
In the 1960s, Lessing turned to more cultural subjects such as art, science, and history, by taking portraits of poets, musicians, physicists, and astronomers. With these photographs, Lessing has produced more than 40 books.
Lessing has taught in Arles, France, at the Venice Biennale, at the Salzburg Summer Academy, and at the Academy of Applied Arts in Vienna. His work has been exhibited throughout the world.

Leonid Nikolaevich Lazarev (Леонид Николаевич Лазарев), notable Russian photo artist and photojournalist born in 1937.
In 1957 he wins the second prize of Moscow Festival of Youth and Students photo contest. Then he decided to become a professional photographer.
Since then he won many photograph prizes. In 1964 Leonid worked as a photojournalist in a "Krugozor" magazine.
In 1974 he becomes a prize-winner of an International contest by the "New Time" magazine. Since then he has shown his work in numerous exhibitions.
On July 15 is the birthday of
Virxilio Viéitez Bértolo, Spanish photographer born in 1930 in Forcarey.
He began working in the building at sixteen and moved to Catalonia. At Palamos he met Julio Pallí who taught him the craft of photography.

Louis Victor Emmanuel Sougez, French photographer and photography critic born in Bordeaux in 1889.
He studied at the School of Fine Arts in the city starting his career as a painter. Around 1912 he devoted himself exclusively to photography and completed his training at various companies in Germany and Switzerland. In 1920 he began working as a freelance photographer and in 1926 founded the photographic service of the newspaper L'Illustration.
He defended artistic photography rejecting pictorial photography and defending the principles of New Objectivity considering photography as an autonomous art. His first photographs were still life and nude using an austere and purely photographic aesthetic.
He died in 1972.
On July 17 is the birthday of
Charles Marville, the pseudonym of Charles François Bossu, French photographer born in 1813, who mainly photographed architecture, landscapes and the urban environment. He used both paper and glass negatives. He is most well known for taking pictures of ancient Parisian quarters before they were destroyed and rebuilt under "Haussmannization", Baron Haussmann's new plan for modernization of Paris. In 1862, he was named official photographer of Paris.
Starting in 1850, Marville began to make photographs. He traveled throughout France, Italy and Germany, using the paper negative process with great skill to create beautiful landscapes and striking architectural photographs. Many of these works were included in albums produced by the pioneering publisher Louis Désiré Blanquart-Evrard. Around 1855, Marville undertook a series of delicate cloud studies, made from the rooftop of his Parisian studio using the collodion negative process. More rapid and sensitive than the paper negative process, the collodion negative enabled the photographer to capture delicate, luminous cloud formations on the city's horizon—-an achievement that was noted by several critics at the 1862 Universal Exhibition in London. At the same time that he was exploring new photographic technologies, Marville expanded his practice in on two lucrative areas: reproductions of artworks (including a significant body of work by the French painter and draughtsman Jean-Dominique Ingres) and architectural photographs. He excelled at both and assumed the title and related privileges of photographer to the Louvre, while he also documented building and renovation projects in Paris and the provinces for prominent French architects, including Eugène Viollet-le-Duc and Felix Duban.
He died in 1879.
On July 18 is the birthday of
Joshua Lutz, American artist working with large-format photography and with video. He was given his first solo exhibition at Gitterman Gallery during the summer of 2004.
In 2008 Lutz's first book, Meadowlands, was published with powerHouse Books. In the fall of 2008 Lutz had a solo exhibition for the Meadowlands series at ClampArt Gallery in New York City.
2013 saw the release of Hesitating Beauty. A series of photographs revealing a different side of Lutz's photography, it tells an extremely personal story of his mother. The book's narrative also carefully and thoughtfully encompassed the generally sensitive topic of mental illness.
Today, July 19, is the birthday of
Jane Eaton Hamilton, Canadian short story writer, visual artist, poet and photographer born in 1954.
Hamilton has published three books of poetry, Body Rain (Brick Books 1992) and Steam-Cleaning Love (Brick Books 1993), "Love Will Burst into a Thousand Shapes" (Caitlin Press,2014), a poetry chapbook (Going Santa Fe, winner of the League of Canadian Poets Poetry Chapbook prize) and two volumes of short fiction July Nights and Other Stories, (Douglas and McIntyre, 1991) and Hunger, (Oberon, 2001), and two other books (children's and nonfiction). She is also the author, under the pseunomymous name of Ellen Prescott, of the memoir No More Hurt which was included on the Guardian's Best Book of the Year list and was a Sunday Times bestseller.
She spent several years as a photographer specializing in Hollywood portraits, travel and newborn photography, and for years volunteered for the organization Now I Lay Me Down to Sleep. Hamilton is also a visual artist whose work can be found at fineartamerica.com.
