On February 14 is the birthday of

Bohumil Kafka, Czech sculptor and pedagogue, born 1878 in Nová Paka, Bohemia.
He studied in Prague with sculptor Josef Václav Myslbek before moving to Vienna and then Paris to continue his studies. He worked in London, Berlin and Rome before returning and settling in Prague. He frequently worked in an Expressive symbolist style, was a noted animalier as well as being known for his decorative sculpture. He was considered a predecessor to the Art Nouveau style and was highly influenced by the works of Auguste Rodin.
He died in 1942.

On February 15 is the birthday of

Carle or Charles-André van Loo, French painter, son of the painter Louis-Abraham van Loo, a younger brother of Jean-Baptiste van Loo and grandson of Jacob van Loo. He was the most famous member of a successful dynasty of painters of Dutch origin. His oeuvre includes every category: religion, history painting, mythology, portraiture, allegory, and genre scenes.
Van Loo followed his brother Jean-Baptiste to Turin, and then to Rome in 1712, where he studied under Benedetto Luti and the sculptor Pierre Legros. After leaving Italy in 1723, he worked in Paris, studied at the Académie Royale, where he gained first prize for drawing in 1723, and received the first prize for historical painting in 1727.
By his simplicity of style and correctness of design, the result of his study of the great Italian masters, he did much to purify the modern French school; but the contemporary praise that was lavished upon his productions now appears undue and excessive.
He died in 1765.

On February 16 is the birthday of

Kenneth "Ken" Price, American ceramic artist and printmaker born in 1935. He studied at the Chouinard Art Institute and Otis Art Institute (now Otis College of Art and Design) in Los Angeles, before receiving his BFA degree from the University of Southern California in 1956. He continued his studies at Chouinard Art Institute in 1957 and received an MFA degree from New York State College of Ceramics at Alfred University in 1959. Kenneth Price studied ceramics with Peter Voulkos at Otis and was awarded a Tamarind Fellowship.
He is best known for his abstract shapes constructed from fired clay. Typically, they are not glazed, but intricately painted with multiple layers of bright acrylic paint and then sanded down to reveal the colors beneath. Ken Price lived and worked in Venice, California and Taos, New Mexico.
He died in 2012.

On February 17 is the birthday of

Manolo Millares, Spanish painter born in 1926 in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, Canary Islands.
Self-taught as an artist, Millares was introduced to Surrealism in 1948. In 1953, he moved to Madrid and became an abstract painter. In 1957, Millares along with Antonio Saura and Pablo Serrano founded the avant-garde group El Paso (The Step) in Madrid. After showing his work in San Pablo in 1957, Millares' work was introduced to the United States in 1958. He attained an international reputation by the early 1960s, and had a solo show at the Pierre Matisse Gallery in New York in 1961.
In Madrid, Millares was associated with ‘The Informalists’, a group of artists including Antoni Tàpies, Enrique Tábara, Antonio Saura, Laurent Jiménez-Balaguer and Aníbal Villacís among many others who insisted that art should be removed from theory and concept. To these artists, the gesture used to make a painting was all-important. In the 1950s, Millares began to make dramatic collages from found materials, especially burlap.
He died in 1972.

On February 18 is the birthday of

Corrado Giaquinto, Italian Rococo painter born in 1703.
As a boy he apprenticed with the modest local painter Saverio Porta, escaping the religious career his parents had intended for him. By October 1724, he left Molfetta, and along with his contemporaries Francesco de Mura and Giuseppe Bonito, he trained from 1719-23 in the prolific Neapolitan studio of Francesco Solimena, either with Solimena or his pupil, Nicola Maria Rossi.
Giaquinto followed a peripatetic career, with long sojourns in Naples, Rome (between 1723-53), Turin (1733 and 1735–39), and Madrid (1753–1761).
The first documented work by his hand is "Christ crucified with the Madonna, Saint John Evangelist, and Magdalene" commissioned in 1730 by king John V of Portugal for the cathedral of the Mafra.
In Madrid, he was patronized by Ferdinand VI, and was ultimately appointed director of the Academy of San Fernando. His influence there was felt by painters such as González Velázquez, José del Castillo, and Mariano Salvador Maella.
He died in 1765.

On February 19 is the birthday of

Milagro Bayarri Casaní, Valencian painter born in Almàssera in 1939.
She began his work as a child, as we can see in one of her paintings dated to 1954, when the artist had only fifteen.
She studied at the School of Arts and Crafts in Valencia between 1952 and 1955. Then studied painting at the Superior School of Fine Arts of San Carlos, Valencia, between 1956 and 1960, obtaining the title of Professor of Drawing.
The artist approaches painting in its different themes: rural landscapes, architecture, portrait, still lifes and religious paintings. Her early paintings shows the influence of Impressionism and Landscaping. This paintings are characterized by the treatment almost realistic of rural landscapes. Milagros palette is full of light and color, capturing with a luminous look the coastal areas of the Mediterranean Sea.

Today, February 20 is the birthday of

Jorge Peteiro Vazquez, Spanish painter and sculptor born in 1959 in La Coruna, where he began his studies with the Jesuits.
He completed his training with knowledge of cinema, drawing and painting. Between 1973 and 1977 he participated in independent theater groups, in creating one of the first fanzines of the city and painted his first mural.
In Santiago de Compostela was integrated into various groups of clear counterculture trend. He traveled to various cities in Italy, France and Spain. Since 1979 he studied engraving in the School of Fine Arts of San Carlos, Valencia.
In 1989 his painting is considered unique with an independent aesthetic criteria and a new value of Galician plastic. His work "Bahía de La Coruna"
was acquired in the 1st. Mostra Union Fenosa. Peteiro ended this period of exploration leaving teaching to move to New York where he lived for a while painting and exhibiting. After a stint in New York, and since 1992, his work is selected in competitions and biennials.
His first major sculpture was installed in 1998 in the Parque Santiago V (Los Cristianos, Arona, Tenerife) and starts displaying large paintings (2 x 4 m.) in the Municipal Hall of A Coruña Maritime Station.
He died in 2013.
