On February 15 is the birthday of

Nickolas Muray (Miklós Mandl), Hungarian-born American photographer and Olympic fencer born in 1892
Muray attended a graphic arts school in Budapest, where he studied lithography, photoengraving, and photography. After earning an International Engraver's Certificate, Muray took a three-year course in color photoengraving in Berlin, where, among other things, he learned to make color filters. At the end of his course he went to work for the publishing company Ullstein. In 1913, with the threat of war in Europe, Muray sailed to New York City, and was able to find work as a color printer in Brooklyn.
By 1920, Muray had opened a portrait studio at his home in Greenwich Village, while still working at his union job as an engraver. In 1921 he received a commission from Harper's Bazaar to do a portrait of the Broadway actress Florence Reed; soon after he was having photographs published each month in Harper's Bazaar, and was able to give up his engraving job. In 1922 he also made a portrait of the dancer Desha Delteil. Muray quickly became recognized as an important portrait photographer, and his subjects included most of the celebrities of New York City. In 1926, Vanity Fair sent Muray to London, Paris, and Berlin to photograph celebrities, and in 1929 hired him to photograph movie stars in Hollywood. He also did fashion and advertising work. Muray's images were published in many other publications, including Vogue, Ladies' Home Journal, and The New York Times.
Muray competed for the United States at the 1928 and 1932 Summer Olympics in the sabre fencing events. Muray represented the New York Athletic Club and was a lifelong fencer for the club.
Between 1920 and 1940, Nickolas Muray made over 10,000 portraits. His 1938's portrait of Frida Kahlo, made while Kahlo sojourned in New York, attending her exhibit at the Julien Levy Gallery, became the best known and loved portrait made by Muray. He and Kahlo remained good friends until her death, in 1954.
Muray died in 1965.

On February 16 is the birthday of

Esther Bubley, American photographer born in 1921, who specialized in expressive photos of ordinary people in everyday lives.
In 1936, inspired by the magazine LIFE, and particularly by the pictures of the Great Depression produced by the Farm Security Administration, she developed a passion for photojournalism and documentary photography.
In the fall of 1942, Roy Stryker hired her as a darkroom assistant at the Office of War Information (OWI). With the encouragement of Stryker and some of the more senior photographers she moved to taking pictures for the OWI historical section, documenting life on the home front during the war. Her most challenging assignment was a noted series on the bus system in the Midwest and South.
In late 1943 she accompanied Stryker to work for Standard Oil Company, along with other photographers. The Bus Story series she produced for Standard Oil, a reprise of her earlier Bus Story for the OWI, earned the award for Best Picture Sequence in the Encyclopædia Britannica/University of Missouri School of Journalism "News Pictures of the Year" in 1948.
By 1947 Bubley began working for the Children's Bureau, a Federal child welfare agency. Over the next several years, she contributed thousands of images to their files, and her work appeared on more than 30 covers of their journal The Child.
She died in 1928.

On February 17 is the birthday of

Timothy Lee Barnwell, American author, commercial photographer, and fine art photographer born in 1955 based in Asheville, NC.
He has worked as a photojournalist and had images published in numerous publications including Time, Newsweek, Mother Jones, Billboard, LensWork, National Parks, American Craft, Astronomy, Outdoor Photographer, and B&W magazine.
In 1980 he founded Appalachian Photographic Workshops and served as Director and photography instructor until in closed in 1988. He is the author of four books, The Face of Appalachia: Portraits from the Mountain Farm (W.W. Norton/NY, 2003); On Earth's Furrowed Brow: The Appalachian Farm in Photographs (W.W. Norton/NY, 2007); Hands in Harmony: Traditional Crafts and Music in Appalachia (W.W. Norton/NY, 2009); and Blue Ridge Parkway Vistas: A Comprehensive Identification Guide to What You See From the Many Overlooks (Numinous Editions,2014).

On February 18 is the birthday of

Pentti Sammallahti, Finland photographer born in 1950 in Helsinki.
He began photographing at 11 and by 1971 began to exhibit extensively in Finland and throughout the world. Sammallahti has travelled widely as a photographer, from his native Scandinavia, across the Soviet Republics through Siberia, to Japan, India, Nepal, Morocco, Turkey, across Europe and Great Britain, and even to South Africa. Sammallahti’s travels and interest in fine printing and lithography has led him to publish numerous portfolios of which the largest and most well known is “The Russian Way” (1996). As a benchmark figure in contemporary Finnish photography, his work has a supernatural sense of a moment in time with the sensitivity and beauty of the world displayed through its animalistic existence. His particular use of dogs, which reflects the human existential experience, shows the shared nature of the earth with a gentle humor and fleeting attitude. Sammallahti describes himself as a wanderer who likes the nature of the great north, the silence, the cold, and the sea. He likes the people and the animals of far off places and he records the relationships between them and their environment.

On February 19 is the birthday of

Ashley Nguyen, American photographer born in 1987.
She combines her background in advertising and art directing with her photography, creating memorable lifestyle and headshot portraits. As a midwest native and graduate from the University of Minnesota, she knows “nice” and is no stranger to hard work. After moving to Los Angeles she has extended her resume to include celebrities, magazines,  non-profit organizations and stills from Sundance award winner “Dear White People”.
When she’s not writing about herself in the third person, Ashley loves to go hiking, do yoga and play in the ocean.
Photography is her calling, her full time profession, and the thing that will undoubtedly drive her insane, or insanely happier than she is now.

On February 20 is the birthday of

Jon Luvelli, American photographer born in Missouri in 1979.
Fine Art Documentarian, whose artwork references emotions as well as conveys social messages. His calculated photographic style is easily distinguished by the romantically raw and macabre atmosphere in his pieces.
His work has been commissioned by Universal, Warner Brothers, and Nike, among others.
"There are many points of views. We as photographers immortalize the existence of an isolated view"

Today, February 21 is the birthday of
