[1]
Antonio Possenti is an artist born in Lucca in 1933 where he lives and works. An extremely important Italian surrealist, he is featured in the Lucca Possenti Museum dedicated to his art.
Possenti is an extraordinary man and painter. He is a delicate poet of surrealism which has been ignored until now. He lives in an incorrupt and unattainable world, in a daily and affectionate metaphysical dimension.
An ideal son of Gauguin (but also of Matisse, Klee, Ensor, Ernst, the great Arab miniatures), Possenti is a very cultured painter of "Elsewhere". Not objective reality, not the purely linguistic research of the Avant-garde, but imagination is the explorative field of his paintings, in a tradition which, in Italy, dates hack to Savinio, Usellini, Clerici, and more recently to Pompa, Armodio and Foppiani.

[2]
«When I was a child and somebody asked me what I wanted to be, I quickly said that painter. I was a skillful painter. But I have also done many other jobs to live. But my goal has always been to be a painter full time and have achieved it is great.»
(Interview wity Antonio Possenti by Paola Coppola)

[3]
He spent much of his adolescence reading all kinds of books, which helped him to discover the expressive qualities of artistic drawing. His family was a great help to his intellectual and cultural training. His father was director of a high school, his mother a teacher and his grandfather was the rector of the University of Pisa and Parliament deputy Augusto Mancini.
After completing his classical studies, he graduated in law and was professor in secondary schools in the province of Lucca. During this teaching period he began his activity as satirical cartoonist, succeeding artist Mino Maccari in the pages of the weekly "Il Mondo", and illustrated several volumes of the series "The Bridge" published by Arnoldo Mondadori Editore. It was crucial the meeting with the Russian painter Marc Chagall in the French Riviera, in 1957. After that, Possenti decided to devote himself body and soul into "pictorial professionalism".

[4]
Possenti tells of Elsewhere, of an Orient which is not there, but which could have been, good-natured puppets with turbans, sinuous and turgid forms, warm precious colours and esotericisms that one does not know to what point they should be taken seriously. He tells of seas that can enter a house, shrewd fishermen, and fake, exhilarating lighthouses which trick navigators; he tells of magic skies marked with falling stars, woods and gardens which house minor crimes and curious individual virtues in their silence. He loves to tell stories.

[5]
During his career, Possenti has traveled extensively, but has always returned to Lucca, where he lives and has his studio in the Square of the Amphitheatre, in the heart of the city.
«... I feel an eternal traveler without a specific goal, driven by curiosity and a great desire for knowledge. My life has always had to face a horizon that does not correspond to a real target, since it is connected to something beyond. I'm always looking for that "beyond".»

[6]
Same as some characters that animate his paintings, Antonio has one eye open and the other closed. The first one, open and cheerful, ready to observe the natural and human worlds to capture those features which constitute the essence. The second one, despite appearances, does not rest, it is not asleep, is not idle. The second Possenti's eye pokes, researches, not outside but in the dark side of privacy, hidden in the receptacle of feelings, the depth of passions. The two views lead to paint a perfect synthesis in which figuration is combined with the magic fantasy that makes Posenti a lovely alchemist, a prodigious and graceful equilibrist.
Maurizio Vanni (2006)

[7]
Possenti seems to want to get rid of prejudices and preconceptions, providing compositions without limitation: not all is what it seems. Some details may hide the basic elements to the understanding of a painting, however, it is always linked to the degree of perception of each viewer. Sometimes we has the impression that all his work corresponds to an attempt to move the existence to somewhere else, other places and other times, almost as to deprive the viewer of real elements, conditions, pollutants: «Things I do refer the existence of man outside of a particular historical moment, though conscious of being a witness of my time.»
John Russel Taylor (2003)
