On September 5 is the birthday of

Pedro E. Guerrero, American photographer born in 1917.
Known for his extraordinary access to Frank Lloyd Wright, he was one of the most sought-after architectural photographers of the 1950s. In a career shift that was part serendipity and part the result of being black-listed by the major shelter magazines for his stance against the Vietnam War, he later concentrated on documenting the work and lives of two important American artists, Alexander Calder and Louise Nevelson.
He took up photography only because the painting classes were filled, but “The minute I made my first print," he said, "I thought, This is mine. This is for me. This is a magic that I can control.” His seven-decade career in photography began in 1939 when the architect Frank Lloyd Wright impulsively hired him to record the ongoing construction at his winter home, Taliesin West, in Scottsdale, Arizona. Just 22 and an Art Center dropout, Guerrero had never seen anything like Wright's "desert camp," and he decided to treat it exactly as it appeared to him, as sculpture. The resulting photographs pleased the architect, and Wright soon invited him to join his Fellowship. Guerrero recorded the original Taliesin in Spring Green, Wisconsin, and other Wright projects before enlisting in the Army Air Corps in 1941. He was stationed in Italy, where he was a photo officer, running a laboratory that developed film taken from planes during bombing runs.
After his service in World War II, Guerrero rekindled his relationship with Wright, resuming an intimacy that has been described as that of a father and son. When it was possible for Wright to command his photographer of choice, it was always Guerrero. Guerrero's understanding of Wright, forged both in the drafting room and while waiting for the sun to fall just so on a redwood beam, made him an important interpreter of the architect's work. His Wright photographs are featured in dozens of books, including the definitive study of his work, “In the Nature of Materials,” by Henry-Russell Hitchcock. Guerrero often included people in his photographs, especially members of the Taliesin Fellowship, which gave the architecture a human scale and also showed how people lived in the buildings. As one of the few able to joke with the architect, Guerrero shot some of the only photographs that show him in a relaxed mode.
He died in 2012.

On September 6 is the birthday of

Christian Liberté Boltanski, French sculptor, photographer, painter and film maker born in 1944, most well known for his photography installations.
Boltanski began creating art in the late 1950s, but didn't rise to prominence until almost a decade later through a few short, avante-garde films and some published notebooks in which he referenced his childhood.
In 1986, Boltanski began creating mixed media/materials installations with light as essential concept. Tin boxes, altar-like construction of framed and manipulated photographs (e.g. Chases School, 1986-1987).
He has participated in over 150 art exhibitions throughout the world.

* He died on July 14th, 2021

On September 7 is the birthday of

Pierre Pellegrini, Swiss photographer born in 1968 in Sorengo.
He shoots incredible long-exposure photographs in black and white.
«After having gone in for architectural design, I realized my dream becoming a physical education teacher. During my professional development, I applied myself to photography. For me, photography represents a wonderful mean to communicate and, at the same time, to give the viewers the chance to feel emotions. I am not quite sure if it’s me who is looking for the themes or if it’s the themes themselves who are looking for me. Yet, whenever such an encounter happens, a picture arises, perfectly in with myself and with my personality.»

On September 8 is the birthday of

Francesco Carrozzini, Italian-born and Emmy-Award-nominated film director, music video director, television commercial director and photographer born in 1982, currently based in Los Angeles.
Carrozzini is known for his narrative and cinematic approach to portraiture; he has photographed a diverse range of contemporary pop culture icons that includes actors Angelina Jolie, Robert De Niro, Cate Blanchett, and Scarlett Johansson; models Naomi Campbell, Heidi Klum, Linda Evangelista, Milla Jovovich, Stephanie Seymour and Tyra Banks; musicians Beyoncé, Lana Del Rey, Sting, Keith Richards, Kanye West, Jay-Z, and Nicki Minaj, as well as artists Jeff Koons, Richard Prince, Andres Serrano, and Marina Abramović.
He has also worked with political figures; among them, former Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan, former Prime Minister of the United Kingdom Tony Blair, former Pakistani Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz, acting United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon, and former New York City mayor Michael Bloomberg.
Carrozzini's images have appeared on the covers and in the pages of: Vanity Fair, The New Yorker, New York Magazine, W, Rolling Stone, L'Uomo Vogue, Vogue Italia and Pop, among others. His advertising client list includes Estee Lauder, Biotherm, Sony Music, Mini Cooper, Roberto Cavalli, Emporio Armani, Salvatore Ferragamo, DKNY, Tommy Hilfiger, Levi's, Baume & Mercier and Chopard.

On September 9 is the birthday of

Lu Houmin (路吼民), Chinese photographer who gained national and international recognition for taking official photographs of Chinese leaders, most notably Mao Zedong, from 1950 to 1964. Lu started out as a teacher, and later switched to photography. Many of his photographs of Mao were different from the official ones, showing the leader in a more relaxed and personal manner.
Lu maintained a rather friendly and simple image of Mao Zedong throughout his life and China's cultural revolution.
Lu started working as the official photographer for the Chinese government in 1950. He was assigned to take pictures in Zhongnanhai of the main Chinese leaders of that time including Chairman Mao Zedong, Premier Zhou Enlai and President Liu Shaoqi. From 1950 to 1957, he worked in the photography section of the Central Garrison Bureau in the General Office of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China and was hired by the Xinhua News Agency in 1958. Lu continued taking pictures from 1950 to 1964. Lu had to be always ready to take the correct image; in a 2008 interview with the South China Morning Post in Hong Kong, he said, "You had to have your camera ready at all times, when the time came you could not doubt for a second, then the leaders would not hold the pose for you".
One of the most famous pictures taken by Lu was of Mao sitting on a stone bench and looking at Lushan Mountain in Jiangxi (1961)
He died in 2015.

On September 10 is the birthday of

  1. Genial entrada!
