Aniversarios (CCXLI) [Agosto / August 1-5]

Todos los aniversarios de Agosto aquí / All anniversaries for August here.

Óleo sobre lienzo / oil on canvas, 40 x 48 cm., 1847. The Saleroom

On August 1 is the birthday of

Gustav S. Seeberger, German architectural painter and lithographer born in 1812.
He studied under Albert Reindel at the Art School in Nurembert. Soon he started to sold landscapes, but tended with particular fondness for faithful reproduction of older monuments. His creations always attracted interest due to the security of the drawing and the clean presentation.
Seeberger's most important subject was the Perspective. Here he swam completely in his fairway. The otherwise dry man suddenly threw up when he could pull his constructive net over a picture.

Since 1854 he was teacher of perspective at the Munich Academy. In this sbuject, he was consulted by all the collegues in and out of the Academy of Munich: Kaulbach, Piloty, Schraudolph, and even Foltsz of Bingen.
His self-proclaimed principles were published in "Principien der Perspektive und deren Anwendung nach einer neuen Methode / Fundamentals of a new method for applied Perspective" (Munich 1860, 1874, Regensburg 1880, and Munich 1884).
He died in 1888.

On August 2 is the birthday of

Gustave van de Woestijne (Woestyne), Belgian painter and engraver born in 1881 in Ghent.
He was a student at the Academy of Fine Arts of Ghent, but due to his fragile health, had to move to the countryside very young. From 1899 he established his residence in Laethem Saint Martin, a small village on the banks of the Lys, in the company of his brother, the Flemish poet Karel van de Woestijne. He made numerous visits to the famous Bruges Fair of 1902, dedicated to the primitive Flemish painters, who strongly influenced his style, which is especially evident in his portraits.

In the first years van de Woestijne painted mainly small portraits, of dreamy expression, with a meticulous technique inspired by the flemish painters and that remind us of the spirit of the English pre-Raphaelites. Other of these small portraits are peasants whose expression is obtained by a sharp drawing, directly inspired by Brueghel.
A second phase of his work is dedicated to religious compositions, treated in the symbolic way of Maurice Denis, representing country landscapes under an idyllic light, such as "Dimanche après-midi" (1914), currently in Brussels.
During the First World War he took refuge in England, where he coincided with Tytgat, Daeye and, later, Permeke.

Aristocrat of tastes and nature, van de Woestijne made a painting of a sober distinction. However, in the 1920s, his drawing hardened, geometrized, the color became more insistent and the general expression more dramatic. In his religious painting he gave up the elegy in favor of the expression of physical suffering and moral solitude, which translated into emotional faces of Christ.
From 1925 to 1928 he was director of the Academy of Fine Arts of Mechelen, having among his students his son Maximilien. He was also a professor at the Higher Institute of Fine Arts in Antwerp, and later at the Higher Institute of Decorative Arts in Brussels.
He died in 1947.

On August 3 is the birthday of

Irmgart Wessel-Zumloh, German painter and graphic artist born in 1907 in Grevenbrück, today Lennestadt.
After graduating from high school she starts - at the express wish of the father, the continuation of the Family tradition - a law degree in Munich. There she also hears art history lectures. She breaks off her law studies, and studies at the Staatliche Kunstakademie Königsberg with Fritz Burmann (1892-1945), a painter and draftsman close to Neue Sachlichkeit and immediately receives a prize in the first semester in a competition to design a memorial of the academy.

Because her father is worried about the future existence of his daughter on a teacher's degree, Irmgart Zumloh changes after about two years studying in Königsberg to the State Art School in Berlin, the "Academic Training Institute for the Artistic Magisterium". There she studies with the painter and graphic artist Georg Tappert (1880-1957), a second-generation expressionist. Right at the beginning of her studies in Berlin she meets her future husband Wilhelm Wessel.
In 1932, Irmgart Zumloh passed her state examination for the Artistic Teaching Office at secondary schools. In 1934 she married the painter Wilhelm Wessel and lived in Hemer, Recklinghausen and Iserlohn.
After an exhibition in 1933 in the Städtisches Gustav-Lübcke-Museum in Hamm, the Wallraf-Richartz-Museum in Cologne in 1934 became the first public institution to acquire graphics by Irmgart Wessel-Zumloh. In the Görlitz German Graphic Art Exhibition and in the Wallraf-Richartz-Museum Cologne graphics by her were confiscated by the National Socialists as "degenerate". A several-week study visit to Rome became a key artistic experience. By encountering Italian painting, she turned to oil painting, after she had previously worked predominantly in graphics.

In 1946, the couple Wessel are co-founders of the West German Artists' Association. From 1952 to 1957 Wilhelm Wessel was the chairman. Numerous solo and group exhibitions follow. In 1950, Wessels travel to the XXV Biennale to Venice and experienced there the spectacular appearance of Jackson Pollock. In 1957 Irmgart Wessel-Zumloh was a member of the Deutscher Künstlerbund, from 1961 to 1967 she was there on the board. In the volume published by Wolfgang Rothe in Heidelberg in 1962 "Wegzeichen im Unbekannten. Neunzehn deutsche Maler zu Fragen der zeitgenössischen Kunst / Nineteen German painters on questions of contemporary art", she was the only woman represented.
She died in 1980.

On August 4 is the birthday of

John Henry Twachtman, American painter born in 1853 in Cincinnati, Ohio, best known for his impressionist landscapes, though his painting style varied widely through his career. Art historians consider Twachtman's style of American Impressionism to be among the more personal and experimental of his generation. He was a member of "The Ten", a loosely allied group of American artists dissatisfied with professional art organizations, who banded together in 1898 to exhibit their works as a stylistically unified group.
Twachtman received his first art training there under Frank Duveneck. Like most artists of the era, Twachtman then proceeded to Europe to further his education. He studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich from 1875 to 1877, and visited Venice with Duveneck and William Merritt Chase. His landscapes from this time exhibit the loosely brushed, shadowy technique taught at Munich. Twachtman also learned etching, and sometimes carried etching plates with him that he could use to spontaneously record a scene.
After a brief return to America, Twachtman studied from 1883 to 1885 at the Académie Julian in Paris, and his paintings dramatically shifted towards a soft, gray and green tonalist style. During this time he painted what some art historians consider to be his greatest masterpieces, including Arques-la-Bataille, in the collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, and Springtime, in the collection of the Cincinnati Art Museum.

"El puente blanco / The White Bridge", óleo sobre lienzo / oil on canvas, 75 x 75 cm., después de / after 1895

In 1886, he returned to America and settled in Connecticut, eventually buying a farm in Greenwich. He often painted and exhibited with fellow artist Julian Alden Weir, and spent considerable time at the art colony in Cos Cob. His presence was vital to the colony.
In addition to his oil paintings, Twachtman continued to create etchings as well as drawings in pastel. Twachtman taught painting at the Art Students League from 1889 until his death in 1902. Twachtman was close friends with Julian Alden Weir and the two often painted together and both also had close associations with the Danish-born painter Emil Carlsen. In 1893, Twachtman received a silver medal in painting at the Columbian Exposition; the same year, he also exhibited his work with Claude Monet at a New York gallery.
In Connecticut his painting style shifted again, this time to a highly personal impressionist technique. Twachtman painted many landscapes of his farm and garden in Greenwich, often depicting the snow-covered landscape. He executed dozens of paintings of a small waterfall on his property, capturing the scene in different seasons and times of day. Late in life Twachtman visited Gloucester, Massachusetts, another center of artistic activity in the late 19th century, and produced a series of vibrant scenes that anticipated a more modernist style yet to gain prominence in American art.

Today, August 5, is the birthday of

Ferdinand Keller, or von Keller, German genre and history painter born in 1842 in Karlsruhe.
In 1857, when he was fifteen, his father was awarded a contract to design bridges, roads and dams in Brazil. Ferdinand and his brother Franz were able to accompany him. Over the course of a four-year stay, he was able to teach himself drawing by sketching the tropical landscape. Shortly after their return, he enrolled at the Academy of Fine Arts, Karlsruhe, where he studied with Johann Wilhelm Schirmer, the former Director of the Academy. After Schirmer's death, he studied with Ludwig des Coudres.
He was unsatisfied with the Academy, however, and took private lessons in the studio of Hans Canon. This was followed, in 1866 and 1867, by study trips to Switzerland and France. He achieved his first recognition with his painting "The Death of Philip II" at the International Exposition. From 1867 to 1869, he lived in Rome, where he made the acquaintance of Anselm Feuerbach and maintained a joint studio with him.

"Jagender Jüngling / Joven cazador / Young Hunter"

In 1870, he became a teacher of portrait and history painting at the Karlsruhe Academy and was appointed a Professor in 1873. From 1880 to 1913, he served as Director.
In addition to his regular paintings, he provided decorations and curtains for the new Karlsruhe Court Theater and the Dresden Semperoper. His decorations for the King Carl Hall at the Landesmuseum Württemberg pleased the King so much that he awarded Keller a title of nobility. Frederick I, Grand Duke of Baden, commissioned him to paint the "History of Baden", now on display at the Staatliche Kunsthalle Baden-Baden. On a smaller scale, his etchings have been used to illustrate numerous books.
He died in 1922.
