Miriam Escofet es una artista española nacida en 1967 en Barcelona, que se mudó al Reino Unido en 1979.
Creció en un hogar de arte y artistas; su padre es el pintor español José Escofet (nacido en 1930), y su madre también era artista.
«Recuerdo particularmente haber visto a mi padre dibujar y estar completamente fascinada por su habilidad. También recuerdo pasar horas revisando sus libros de arte y descubriendo el mundo del arte en todas sus múltiples expresiones. En particular fueron las obras de pintores renacentistas y góticos las que me cautivaron; Bosch, Da Vinci, Van Eyck, Mantegna, Piero della Francesca, los mundos mágicos y místicos que representan sus obras. En cierto sentido, supongo que aprendí desde muy temprana edad el lenguaje "especial" del arte, que sobrepasa el intelecto y conecta directamente con la imaginación y las emociones ".

Estudió en la Epsom School of Art & Design (1986) y Diseño en 3D en la Brighton School of Art, graduándose en 1991. Su carrera como pintora comenzó poco después de graduarse y desde entonces trabaja como artista. Su obra está dedicada a sus influencias en la arquitectura del período clásico, gótico y renacentista. El tema de cada una de sus obras de arte se relaciona normalmente con la estética, la imaginación y el simbolismo.
La obra de Miriam Escofet ha sido publicada y presentada en numerosas exposiciones individuales y colectivas desde 1994 en el Reino Unido, Francia e Italia, ha sido seleccionada para el BP Portrait Award en 2009, 2010 y 2012 y para la exposición anual de la Royal Society of Portrait Painters.

El ganador del Premio de Retrato BP 2018 ha sido anunciado en la National Portrait Gallery en Londres, en el año 29 que BP patrocina esta competición.
La obra ganadora fue seleccionada entre 2.667 entradas de 88 paises. Un panel de jueces que incluye a la periodista Rosie Millard y el artista Glenn Brown, han seleccionado de forma anómina las obras ganadoras.
El primer premio fue para la artista con sede en Londres Miriam Escofet, por "Un ángel en mi mesa", un retrato de su madre bebiendo té.
Tras recibir el premio, Miriam Escofet dijo: "Creo que el Premio de Retrato se ha convertido en una de las mayores competiciones a nivel global, así que es un honor increíble." BP
Los jueces apreciaron "la reserva e intimidad de la composición de Escofet, que evoca tanto la calma interior de la modelo como la idea de la 'madre universal".

The winner of the BP Portrait Award 2018 has been announced at the National Portrait Gallery in London, in the 29th year of BP’s sponsorship of the competition.
The winning work was selected from 2,667 entries from 88 countries. A panel of judges, including journalist Rosie Millard and artist Glenn Brown, anonymously selected the winning works.
First prize went to the London-based artist, Miriam Escofet, for An Angel at my Table, a portrait of her mother drinking tea.
After receiving her prize, Miriam Escofet said, “I think the Portrait Award has become one of the major art competitions globally so it’s an incredible honour.” BP
The judges appreciated "the reserve and intimacy of Escofet's composition, which evokes both the inner calm of the model and the idea of the 'universal mother.'"
The painter had previously been selected four times for this award, which finally achieves a realistic and ethereal work with which she said she wanted to capture the figure of that "universal mother". EFE

«Mi obra ha evolucionado a lo largo de los años a través de muchos temas e ideas, como la naturaleza muerta, la arquitectura y la perspectiva, la alegoría, la composición imaginaria y, más recientemente, el retrato. Pero la pasión unificadora en todas mis pinturas es describir una sensación de espacio, volumen, atmósfera y detalle, llegando a una especie de expresión hiperreal del tema. Estoy muy interesada en el hacer, el proceso y la técnica. Mi obra es de inspiración clásica y el viaje a una pintura puede ser muy multidisciplinario, a menudo con la construcción de accesorios, dioramas o elaboradas maquetas, y el uso de una perspectiva compleja.»

«Honestamente puedo decir que nunca me he sentido artísticamente bloqueada. Tengo el problema opuesto, que es que no hay suficientes horas en el día para trabajar en todas las ideas que tengo. Siempre tengo un atraso en proyectos que intentan llegar, algunos más formados que otros. Debido a mi técnica y al nivel de detalle en mi trabajo, mis pinturas tardan unos meses en completarse. Una pintura en particular, "Los cielos / The Heavens", tomó un año desde la etapa de idea hasta el final.
Tan pronto como estoy en la etapa final de una pintura, empiezo a tener una idea muy clara del próximo trabajo. Algunas ideas están en el fondo de mi mente, siendo reflexionadas durante años hasta que aparecen de repente. Otras nacen muy rápidamente. Es casi como si cada idea encontrara su propio momento para venir al mundo.»

«Pinto principalmente al óleo, aunque exploro otros medios. Mi técnica es extremadamente detallada, aplicando muchas capas y esmaltes para lograr una sensación de espacio y estado de ánimo. Una pintura al óleo me puede llevar meses hasta estar terminada. Sigo trabajando en una pieza hasta que siento que he llegado a una expresión de espacio y atmósfera palpables. Miro las pinturas como portales: mundos en los que uno puede visualmente entrar y ser transportado e incluso transformado. Creo que la función principal del arte es provocar un momento de trascendencia en el espectador, en resumen, llenarlo de asombro.

Miriam Escofet is a Spanish artist born in 1967 in Barcelona, moved to the UK in 1979.
She grew up in a home of artists and art; her father is the Spanish painter Jose Escofet (b. 1930), and her mother were also an artist.
«I particularly remember watching my father draw and being completely entranced by his ability. I also remember spending hours pouring through his art books and discovering the world of art in all its manifold expressions. In particular it was the works of renaissance and Gothic painters that captivated me; Bosch, Da Vinci, Van Eyck, Mantegna, Piero della Francesca, the magical, mystical worlds their works depicted. In a sense I suppose I learned from a very early age the ‘special’ language of art, which bypasses the intellect and connects straight to the imagination and emotions.»

She studied a Foundation course at Epsom School of Art & Design (1986), and 3D Design at the Brighton School of Art, graduated in 1991. Her painting career began soon after graduating and she has been working as an artist ever since. Her work is dedicated to her influences on the architecture of the classical, Gothic and renaissance period. Her theme of each artwork is commonly related to aesthetics, imagination, and symbolism.
Miriam Escofet's artwork has been published and featured in many solo and collective exhibitions since 1994 in UK, France, and Italy. Her work has been selected for the BP Portrait Award exhibitions in 2009, 2010 and 2012 and for the Royal Society of Portrait Painters annual exhibition.

«My work has evolved over the years through many themes and ideas, including still life, architecture and perspective, allegory, imaginary composition and most recently portraiture. But the unifying passion in all my paintings is describing a sense of space, volume, atmosphere and detail, arriving at a kind of hyper real expression
of the subject matter. I am very interested in making, process and technique. My work is classically inspired and the journey to a painting can be very multi-disciplinary, often involving the construction of props, dioramas or elaborate maquettes, and the use of complex perspective.»

«Llegué al retrato después de haber pasado muchos años explorando diferentes géneros de la pintura ... Mi primer retrato fue en realidad un retrato de mi padre que pinté en 2007... primero retrato a mi padre ... y el último es uno de mi madre. Ese fue mi primer retrato y me sentí segura porque era mi padre, pero en realidad estaba muy feliz de cómo resultó ... fue una hermosa señal de que algo iba bien, y fue el comienzo de mi viaje hacia el retrato, pero me traje todas las habilidades que aprendí a través de todos estos diferentes tipos de pinturas que estaba haciendo.»
«I arrived to portrait having spent many years exploring all these different genres of painting... My first portrait was actually a portrait of my father that I painted it in 2007... first I portrait my father... and the last one is one of my mother. That was my first portrait and I felt safe because it was my father, but actually I was really happy with how it turned out... it was a lovely sign that something was getting right, and it was the beginning of my journey into portraiture, but I brought to that all the skills I was learnt through all these different types of paintings that I was doing.»

«I can honestly say that I have never felt artistically blocked. I have the opposite problem, which is that there aren’t enough hours in the day to work on all the ideas that I have. I always have a backlog of projects trying to come through, some more fully formed than others. Because of my technique and the level of detail in my work, my paintings take a few months each to complete. One painting in particular, The Heavens, took a year from idea stage to finish.
As soon as I am at the end stage of a painting, I start to get a very clear idea of the next work. Some ideas are sitting in the back of my mind, being mulled over for years until they suddenly pop through, others are born very quickly. It is almost as if each idea finds it’s own moment to come into the world.»

«I paint mainly in oils, although I do explore other media. My technique is extremely detailed, applying many layers and glazes to achieve a sense of space and mood. An oil
painting can take months to finish. I keep working at a piece until I feel that I have arrived at an expression of palpable space and mood. I look at paintings as portals - worlds one can visually step into and be transported and sometimes even transformed by. I believe the primary function of art is to trigger a moment of transcendence in the viewer, in short to fill one with wonder.»
