Ho Fan, Modernbook Gallery

Ho Fan es un célebre fotógrafo, director de cine y actor chino nacido en Shangai en 1937. Emigró con su familia a Hong Kong a edad muy temprana.

Comenzó a fotografiar desde muy jóven con una cámara Rolleiflex que le regaló su padre. Autodidacta, sus fotografías muestran su fascinación por la vida urbana, calles, callejones, barriadas y mercados.

En sus inicios, revelaba en la bañera de su casa y pronto desarrolló un volumen de trabajo significativo, haciendo una crónica del Hong Kong de los 50 y 60s en tiempos en que la ciudad se convertía en un importante centro metropolitano.

Ha ganado más de 280 premios en exhibiciones y competiciones en todo el mundo desde 1956.

Es miembro de la Sociedad Fotográfica de América, de la Royal Photographic Society y de la Royal Society of Arts, de Inglaterra, Miembro Honorario de las Sociedades Fotográficas de Alemania, Francia, Italia, Bélgica, Brasil, Argentina y Singapur.

Actualmente reside en California.

Su trabajo se caracteriza por una singular observación de la vida cotidiana en las calles, las sombras y claroscuros por los que se le ha identificado como un descendiente de la Bauhaus. Trabaja en blanco y negro, sepias y hay un especial cuidado por la luz y el encuadre, creando unas atmósferas sobrias, melancólicas y altamente estéticas.

Ho Fan / 何藩 is a celebrated Chinese Photographer, Film director and Actor. He has won over 280 awards from international exhibitions and competitions worldwide since 1956 for his photography.

Ho Fan was born in Shanghai in 1937, but immigrated with his family to Hong Kong at an early age. Ho began photographing at a very young age with a Rolleiflex camera his father gave him. Largely self-taught, his photos display a fascination with urban life, explored alleys, slums, markets and streets, depicting the street vendors and children only a few years younger than himself. He developed his images in the family bathtub and soon had built up a significant body of work, chronicling Hong Kong in the 50s and 60s as it was becoming a major metropolitan center.

Upon seeing Ho Fan's work for the first time in 2006, gallery owner Laurence Miller commented that "[t]hey felt like direct descendants of the Bauhaus, yet they were made in Hong Kong. They were abstract and humanistic at the same time."

Ho Fan is a Fellow of the Photographic Society of America, the Royal Photographic Society and the Royal Society of Arts in England, and an Honorary Member of the Photographic Societies of Singapore, Argentina, Brazil, Germany, France, Italy and Belgium.

En julio de 2009, se llevó a cabo en la Modernbook Gallery una charla artistística con Ho Fan, conducida por Brian Taylor, Profesor de Arte y Diseño del programa de fotografía en la Universidad Estatal de San José. Ho Fan habla de su historia y filosofía en relación a la creación de imágenes.
