Jurga [Escultura / Sculpture]

Jurga
(Utena, Lietuva / Lituania / Lithuania, 1977-)

"Deux copines / Dos amigas / Two Friends", terracota, 2007

"Le nez dans le ciel / La nariz al cielo / The Nose in the Sky", bronce / bronze, 2008

"Surprise / Sorpresa", bronce / bronze, 2007

"Ma grande mére / Mi abuela / My Grandmother", 2009

Jurga Martin is a young artist born in Utena (northeast Lithuania) in 1977, now based in Rouen (France). Sculptor and designer, this young signing simply as "Jurga", has won the Grand Prix Hall of Rouen in 2005. According Jurga: "design makes a great contribution to sculpture and conversely, sculpture to design. So it is very easy for a trained eye to notice that a designer is also a sculptor." Often referred to her "obsession": "It is necessary that the sculpture is alive. I work the expressions of characters who learn, who discover, who marvel themselves".

"If I'm not the first surprised with my sculpture, I consider it a failure"

"La chorale / El coro / The Choir", terracota, 2006

"Deux fréres / Dos hermanos / Two Brothers", terracota

"All Jurga's works fascinate by their vitality, an incredible accuracy of their attitudes, expressions, a great sense of humour, charm and simplicity. These are the evident echos of the success of sculpture which is representational and contemporary at the same time.
How not to succumb to this fascinating charm of terracotta whose rough surface deploys yet such humanity! How to resist the saga of these characters with such an evocative force full of simplicity, tenderness, gaiety or sadness.
The expressions, gestures, attitudes reflect a profound knowledge of a human being no matter social conditions or age. And this is what reveals the talent and highlights the immortal discipline which is sculpture."
André Ruellan, art critic

"Tu vois ce n'est pas grave / Ya ves que no es grave / You see it is not serious", bronce / bronze, 2008

"The dialogue with sculpture obsessed myself. Is a dialogue that no necessarily expressed with words, but through the eyes and hands. I have fear not to be success, don't be remembered. So I look in the eyes, hands and hear what sculpture says to me. If it doesn't talk, is not alive. That's my job: make it talk.
I take sculpture as it comes. Sometimes there's nothing interesting there, and this hurts me. Sometimes the dialogue is very strong and sculpture itself feels the force immediately. Is this little 'something more' what is essential".

Jurga con sus trabajos / with her works

Jurga's sculptures caught me from the first one I saw. The expressions she gets on the faces of children, the naturalness of the poses, the atmosphere of groups of characters and details, hands, feet ... pure beauty, simplicity and closeness that only some touched by the magic of the creative power are capable of achieving.

You can enjoy Jurga's work in her website, her blog and her facebook.

Jurga y Soutine

Soutine: "Portrait d'homme / Retrato de un hombre / Portrait of a Man, 'Emile Lejeune' "
Óleo sobre lienzo / oil on canvas, 1922-23. Musée de L’Orangerie (París, Francia / France)

Jurga: "Portrait d'homme / Retrato de un hombre / Portrait of a Man"

"Chaïm Soutine, born in Lithuania (*) in 1983 1893 and died in Paris in 1943 was a French painter.
Shortly effusive, introverted and secretive "Soutine remained an enigma unreadable 'till his end. His paintings are the only clues to understand this mysterious man"
Madly in love with him and his paintings, many of my works in terracotta are based on his paintings. This has allowed me to better understand his suffering and passion.
I wish I had his tenacity ..."

(*) Actually Chaïm Soutine was born in Smilavichy near Minsk, modern day Belarus, then part of the Russian Empire, but he studied in Vilnius at the Vilna Academy of Fine Arts, from 1910 to 1913.
