La Dama de Elche en el sitio donde fue encontrada / on the site where she was found

"Retrato de / Portrait of Maria Kolb", 1915

"Chinesen in der Pferdebahn / Chinos en el carro de caballos / Chinese in the Horse Cart", 1889

On August 1 is the birthday of

Sakai Hōitsu (酒井 抱一), Japanese painter of the Rinpa school born in 1761. He is known for having revived the style and popularity of Ogata Kōrin, and for having created a number of reproductions of Kōrin's work.
Moving from Edo to Kyoto, Hōitsu began his studies in art in the Kanō school before moving on to study under Utagawa Toyoharu of the ukiyo-e style. He later studied under Watanabe Nangaku of the Maruyama school and Sō Shiseki of the nanga style before finally becoming a painter of the Rinpa school.
Hōitsu became a Buddhist priest in 1797, and spent the last 21 years of his life in seclusion. During this time, he studied the work of Ogata Kōrin extensively, as well as that of Kōrin's brother Ogata Kenzan, and produced a number of reproductions of the brothers' works. He also produced two books of woodblock prints of the brothers' work, as well as one book of his own; these were titled Kōrin Hyakuzu (1815), Kenzan Iboku Gafu (1823), and Oson Gafu respectively.
Hōitsu's style shows elements of the realism of ukiyo-e, but resembles particularly the decorative style of Ogata Kōrin, which Hōitsu took major steps to revive.
He died in 1828.

On August 2 is the birthday of

Håkon Stenstadvold, Norwegian painter, illustrator, journalist, art critic and politician for the Conservative Party, born in 1912.
He studied at the Norwegian National Academy of Fine Arts from 1931 to 1934 and at Academie Scandinave, Paris from 1934 to 1935. He later conducted several study trips in Italy and France in 1938 (studying under Marcel Gromaire and Pierre Dubreuil), 1948, 1951 and 1955 to 1956. Stenstadvold was represented at the National Autumn Exhibition of 1934, and held his first own exhibit in 1938. He painted in the figurative style. The pinnacle work of his career was the illustrations of the book trilogy Kristin Lavransdatter. He is also represented with works in the National Museum of Stockholm.
Stenstadvold issued several books, and was a journalist in Bo-Nytt from 1942 to 1969 and an art critic in Aftenposten from 1946 to 1953. He was also member of Bærum municipal council from 1956 to 1959. From 1964 to 1977 he was the rector of the Norwegian National Academy of Craft and Art Industry.
Stenstadvold was condecorated as a Knight, First Class of the Royal Norwegian Order of St. Olav in 1969.
He died in 1977.

On August 3 is the birthday of

T. Allen Lawson, American artist born in 1963, recognized for his landscape paintings of Wyoming and Maine subjects. His work is characterized by patient observation of nature and an interest in abstract design.
He attended the College of Santa Fe (now Santa Fe University of Art and Design), the American Academy of Art in Chicago, and the Lyme Academy College of Fine Arts, where he studied with Deane G. Keller and Aaron Shikler; he also was mentored by artist Ned Jacob.
After his studies he returned to the west to paint the landscape around Jackson, Wyoming, participating in pack trips with fellow plein air painters. Initially a pure landscape painter, Lawson has more recently introduced historical references into his work; he joined a colleague in following the entire route taken by the Lewis and Clark expedition, which served as the theme for a series of paintings depicting sites along the trail as they appear today.
He has exhibited in numerous galleries and museums.

On August 4 is the birthday of

the discovery of The Lady of Elche or Lady of Elx, a polychrome stone bust.
It was discovered at L'Alcúdia, an archaeological site on a private estate two kilometers south of Elx/Elche, Alicante, Spain. The Lady of Elche is generally known as an Iberian sculpture from the 4th century BC, although the artisanship suggests strong Hellenistic influences. According to The Encyclopedia of Religion, the Lady of Elche, is believed to have a direct association with Tanit, the goddess of Carthage, who was worshiped by the Punic-Iberians.

The day August 4, 1897, workers at the farm were clearing the southeast slope of the hill of La Alcudia, for agricultural purposes. According to local legend, Manuel Campello Esclápez, Manolico, a boy of 14 years (this data takes issue with his birth certificate) who helped with the work, was the discoverer. Using the mattock of Antonio Macia, and taking advantage of a break of day laborers, he began to dig.
Agricultural workers of Doctor Campello de Elche were taking their lunch, while Manolico was on the embankment of the mound of La Alcudia. In a stroke of mattock he realized that ran into something hard that was not soil (you can still see the mark of the mattock). He called men and among all began to dig the sand. That's how came the bust of the Dama de Elche. Since then it was baptized by Manolico as Moorish Queen.
This version, however, differs from the official report by Pedro Ibarra Ruiz on August 14 the same year. According to the report was Antonio Macia who hits with his mattock in the Lady.

On August 5 is the birthday of

Thomas John "Tom" Thomson, a remarkable Canadian artist born in 1877.
He directly influenced a group of Canadian painters that would come to be known as the Group of Seven, and though he died before they formally formed, he is sometimes incorrectly credited as being a member of the group itself.
Thomson first visited Algonquin Park in 1912. There after he often traveled around Ontario with his colleagues, especially to the wilderness of Ontario, which was to be a major source of inspiration for him. In 1912 he began working, along with other artists who would go on to form the Group of Seven after his death, at Rous and Mann Press, but left the following year to work as a full-time artist. He first exhibited with the Ontario Society of Artists in 1913, and became a member the following year. He would continue to exhibit with the Ontario Society until his death under mysterious circumstances in 1917.

On August 6 is the birthday of

Christian Wilhelm Allers, German painter and printmaker born in 1857 in Hamburg.
He first worked as a lithographer, and in 1877 he moved to Karlsruhe where he continued working. In the Kunstakademie (state academy of fine arts) he was a student of Prof. Ferdinand Keller.
From 1880-81 he served in the German navy in Kiel. There he got to know Klaus Groth, who became a friend of his.
Allers became well-known when he published his collection of prints "Club Eintracht" in 1888. Several other books and maps (collections of prints) followed, so at the beginning of the 1890s he was able to build a villa on Capri. He lived there for many years, also spending some time in Hamburg, Karlsruhe, and travelling around the world.
In autumn 1902, there was a scandal. Friedrich Alfred Krupp, another famous person living in Capri, was accused by some Italian newspapers of homosexuality and pederasty. Some weeks later, Allers was accused, by court. Krupp died some weeks later, presumably a suicide. Allers managed to escape before the lawsuit began, which led to a sentence of 4½ years imprisonment, pronounced in absentia. According to Tito Fiorani (Le dimore del mito, La Conchiglia, Capri 1996, pp. 23 e 24), "Allers had distinctly homosexual tendencies, and liked to surround himself with boys, whom he often used as models".
Allers left Capri and began travelling around the world for more than 10 years, staying some time in New Zealand, Samoa, and Australia. During this time, he often used the pseudonym "W. Andresen", and earned money by making portraits of wealthy people.
He died in 1915 in Karlsruhe some months after returning to Germany.
