"Punch and Judy", óleo sobre lienzo / oil on canvas, 41 x 56 cm., 1943. Sotheby's

"Apolo y Jacinto / Apollo and Hyacinth", mármol / marble, altura / height 191 cm., 1540s,

The Red List

Aprovechando la G.I.

"Autorretrato / Self Portrait", grafito sobre papel / graphite on paper, 1938

"Gitana / Gipsy Woman", óleo sobre lienzo / oil on canvas, 100 x 74 cm., 1961.

On November 1 is the birthday of

Laurence Stephen (L.S.) Lowry, English artist born in 1887. Many of his drawings and paintings depict Pendlebury, Lancashire, where he lived and worked for more than 40 years, and also Salford and its surrounding areas.
Lowry is famous for painting scenes of life in the industrial districts of North West England in the mid-20th century. He developed a distinctive style of painting and is best known for his urban landscapes peopled with human figures often referred to as "matchstick men". He painted mysterious unpopulated landscapes, brooding portraits and the unpublished "marionette" works, which were only found after his death.
Due to his use of stylised figures and the lack of weather effects in many of his landscapes he is sometimes characterised as a naïve "Sunday painter", although this is not the view of the galleries that have organised retrospectives of his works.
A large collection of Lowry's work is on permanent public display in the Lowry, a purpose-built art gallery on Salford Quays named in his honour. Lowry rejected five honours during his life, including a knighthood in 1968, and consequently holds the record for the most rejected British honours. On 26 June 2013 a major retrospective opened at the Tate Britain in London, his first at the Tate, and in 2014 his first solo exhibition outside the UK was held in Nanjing, China.
He died in 1976.

On November 2 is the birthday of

Jean-Baptiste-Siméon Chardin, French painter born in 1699.
He is considered a master of still life, and is also noted for his genre paintings which depict kitchen maids, children, and domestic activities. Carefully balanced composition, soft diffusion of light, and granular impasto characterize his work.
He served apprenticeships with the history painters Pierre-Jacques Cazes and Noël-Nicolas Coypel, and in 1724 became a master in the Académie de Saint-Luc.
Upon presentation of The Ray in 1728, he was admitted to the Académie Royale de Peinture et de Sculpture. The following year he ceded his position in the Académie de Saint-Luc. He made a modest living by "produc[ing] paintings in the various genres at whatever price his customers chose to pay him", and by such work as the restoration of the frescoes at the Galerie François I at Fontainebleau in 1731.
Beginning in 1737 Chardin exhibited regularly at the Salon. He would prove to be a "dedicated academician", regularly attending meetings for fifty years, and functioning successively as counsellor, treasurer, and secretary, overseeing in 1761 the installation of Salon exhibitions.
His work gained popularity through reproductive engravings of his genre paintings (made by artists such as F.-B. Lépicié and P.-L. Sugurue), which brought Chardin income in the form of "what would now be called royalties".
Chardin worked very slowly and painted only slightly more than 200 pictures (about four a year) total.
He died in 1779.

On November 3 is the birthday of

Benvenuto Cellini, Italian goldsmith, sculptor, draftsman, soldier, musician, and artist born in 1500, who also wrote a famous autobiography and poetry. He was one of the most important artists of Mannerism.
The son of a musician and builder of musical instruments, Cellini was pushed towards music, but when he was fifteen, his father reluctantly agreed to apprentice him to a goldsmith, Antonio di Sandro, nicknamed Marcone. After a visit to Pisa and two periods of living in Florence (where he was visited by the sculptor Torrigiano), he moved to Rome, at the age of nineteen. His first works there were a silver casket, silver candlesticks, and a vase for the bishop of Salamanca, which won him the approval of Pope Clement VII. Another celebrated work from Rome is the gold medallion of "Leda and the Swan" executed for the Gonfaloniere Gabbriello Cesarino, and which is now in the Museo Nazionale del Bargello in Florence. He also took up the flute again, and was appointed one of the pope's court musicians.
From Florence he went to the court of the duke of Mantua, and then back to Florence. On returning to Rome, he was employed in the working of jewellery and in the execution of dies for private medals and for the papal mint.
At the age of 37, upon returning from a visit to the French court, he was imprisoned on a charge (apparently false) of having embezzled the gems of the pope's tiara during the war. He was confined to the Castel Sant'Angelo, escaped, was recaptured, and was treated with great severity; he was in daily expectation of death on the scaffold. The intercession of Pier Luigi's wife, and especially that of the Cardinal d'Este of Ferrara, eventually secured Cellini's release, in gratitude for which he gave d'Este a splendid cup. Cellini then worked at the court of Francis I at Fontainebleau and Paris.
During the war with Siena, Cellini was appointed to strengthen the defences of his native city, and, though rather shabbily treated by his ducal patrons, he continued to gain the admiration of his fellow citizens by the magnificent works which he produced. He was also named a member (Accademico) of the prestigious Accademia delle Arti del Disegno of Florence, founded by the Duke Cosimo I de' Medici, on 13 January 1563, under the influence of the architect Giorgio Vasari.
He died in 1571.

On November 4 is the birthday of

James Edward Brewton, American painter and printmaker born 1930, in Toledo, Ohio, who synthesized expressionism, graffiti and Pataphysics.
While in his teens, Brewton studied drawing at the Toledo Museum of Art and painting with John Charvet. At 21, Brewton joined the Marines and served in the Korean War. He did surprisingly well, climbing to the rank of sergeant. Combat changed him, however: He became a pacifist, protesting the Vietnam War and painting antiwar works. Brewton's health was wrecked, and he was increasingly plagued by debilitating spine problems.
Although Brewton's style became expressionistic and inspired by graffiti, his training was traditional. Taking advantage of the G.I. Bill, he studied at the Ruskin School at Oxford in 1954-55 and the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts (PAFA) from 1955 through 1958. At PAFA, Brewton was a protégé of Franklin C. Watkins and Hobson Pittman.
At The Print Club, where Brewton worked on weekends, he first saw the work of Asger Jorn and was greatly impressed by the wildly expressive and colorful work of the CoBrA group. Brewton later befriended Jorn, living in Denmark for months at a time. Other strong influences were André Breton and Alfred Jarry. These European, avant-garde inspirations were unusual for a Philadelphia-based artist in the 1950s. Brewton's work won awards and prizes, and he was championed by critics in Philadelphia and New York while still a student.
From his base in Philadelphia, Brewton traveled whenever he could, to Spain, France, England and Denmark. He and his then-partner, writer Barbara Holland, lived in Denmark during much of 1962. In early 1964, Brewton lent several works he owned to the Philadelphia Museum of Art's Asger Jorn exhibition.
In pain and facing partial paralysis even if spine surgery were successful, Brewton shot himself at around 3 p.m. on May 11, 1967.

Today, November 5, is the birthday of

Paulino Vicente Rodriguez, Spanish painter, a prominent portrait painter born in Oviedo in 1900.
He began his studies at the "School of Arts and Crafts" of Oviedo, to continue them later in the "School of Fine Arts of San Fernando" in Madrid thanks to a grant from the Provincial Council of Oviedo.
After a stay in Italy he settled in Oviedo in 1931. In 1933 achieved by opposition the post of professor in the local Institute of Sama de Langreo and later the post of professor at the "Male Institute" in Oviedo. The latter institute, today Alfonso II, has its main classroom of Art dedicated to his memory.
In his paintings he captures the architectural nuances of the city of Oviedo, although its theme is quite varied, including still lifes, religious paintings, portraits and murals. After the civil war he made commisions to rebuilding the city for several institutions, including the University of Oviedo, almost completely destroyed in 1934. He also made iconographic presentations to decorate the Philharmonic Theater of Oviedo and the choir of the sanctuary Covadonga. Among his works are also highlights the numerous portraits of personalities like Buñuel or Henry Moore. In 1952 he was appointed restorer of artworks of the Provincial Government, being among the works related to this position the restoration of the Palace of Gil de Jaz along with architect Francisco Somolinos.
In the early 70s begins the series of portraits "Spaniards outside Spain," which includes artists such as Luis Buñuel, Jorge Guillen and Pau Casals.
He died in 1990.
