Uruguayos / Uruguayans (XXX) - Armando Bergallo (I) (Pintura, Animales / Painting, Animals)

Armando Bergallo is a multifaceted artist with whom we have contacted thanks to the usual dedication of my good friend and collaborator Shirley Rebuffo. Armando and Freek have been kind enough to send us a profuse and well documented collection of images of his works and a review that I will be publishing in a series of posts that, for practical purposes, and to offer a wide panorama on the varied work of Armando, i've divided in thematic blocks.
To begin with, and given the inveterate predilection of this blog for the art related to living beings, a selection of his pictorial work dedicated to animals.

"Le Taureau / El toro / The Bull", acrílico sobre tela / acrylic on canvas, 275 x 205 cm., 2014

"Lions / Leones", acrílico sobre tela / acrylic on canvas, 160 x 90 cm., 2014

Frank Claessen [7b]

Armando Bergallo was born in Montevideo, Uruguay, in 1942, and currently lives in Lalandusse, region Aquitaine, department Lot-et-Garonne, France.
Regarding his adolescence he tells us: "Thanks to my father, I discovered the Greek mythology and the Greek philosophy, which has marked my work until today. I have always deeply admired the work of Velasquez, Piero de la Francesca and the architecture of the Chartres Cathedral. Later I rediscovered the original works of Leonardo da Vinci, Michelangelo, Caravaggio, Van Gogh, Miró, Picasso, Egon Schiele, Lucien Freud, the language of the Street Art artists. Since Montevideo the poetry of García Lorca always accompanied me and much later in Europe, I discovered the wonderful voice of Jonas Kaufmann together with the fascinating writings of the astrophysicist Trinh Xuan Thuan.

[2]
«In 1959 I started painting classes at the Taller Torres García, under the direction of José Gurvich, whom I met through my history teacher Toto [Julia] Añorga, wife of Gurvich. From the whole group in 1960, only four disciples became private students of Gurvich and we took lessons in his workshop in the area El Cerro.
In 1963 the four disciples, Gorki Bollar, Clara Scremini, Hector Vilche and myself founded the group Taller de Montevideo, realizing exhibitions, murals in the constructivist line of Torres and impregnated with the magical personality of Gurvich. Four different personalities start to emerge.»

[3]
«In January 1966 with the group Taller de Montevideo together with a new member Ernesto Vila, we travelled to Europe with an official invitation from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Netherlands, where we held our first exhibition in The Hague in June of that year.
In 1967, after discovering the work of Nicolas Schöffer in Paris, Taller de Montevideo settled in London. We began a series of multidisciplinary works, environmental art, street interventions, kinetic mural parallel to individual works of painting, sculpture and murals. The works of Taller de Montevideo were presented at the Paris Biennale, Venice Biennale, Institute of Contemporary Art London, Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago. During this period Bollar, Scremini and later Vila left Taller de Montevideo.»

In this latest creations, les Animaux (Animals), it is they who are looking at us, who observe us. You, spectator, have passed the screening of their scrutiny... Nothing is inocuous.
Look at these eyes, they are those of Armando, green-yellow...
Striking in the crocodile and the wolf!
Danielle Bigata, sculptor, statuary

[4]
«In London, Taller de Montevideo looked for the permanent renewal of the visual art space. Facing the inevitable repetition that involves the use of technical elements [the motor in the kinetic art], we decided that ideally the introduction of the human being in our structures gave us the freedom, the possibility of permanent creation in the work. To identify the results of this experimentation we invented the word CRONUS using numbers, in the manner of opus.»

[5]
«In 1972 I moved to The Hague where I continued my artwork and created the Multidisciplinary Activities department at the Vrije Academie in The Hague. The following year I founded the Film Group Holland and produced the film SHOOTING SMOOTHLY.
From 1974, after a separation of two years, Vilche and I decided to continue with Taller de Montevideo in The Netherlands, where we created the environmental art project PROPOSITION 10 at Het Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam. Subsequently we represented the Netherlands at various international events. For this reason we created the foundation Taller Amsterdam.»
In 1993 Taller Amsterdam commissioned Freek van Kleij to be responsible for the administrative organization and the art exhibitions of Taller and as Production Director of the Taller spectacles.
The operas of Taller Amsterdam were internationally recognized for their renewing character of the artistic language, the monumental dimension and the omnipresence of the visual art.»

[6]
«Freek van Kleij and I decided to settle our home and work in France, Aquitaine with the plan to develop new forms of creation and communication between my artwork and the public. Taller Amsterdam ceased to exist in 2004 and a new stage of creation began. The topics, which have always interested me, mythology, mathematics and astrophysics, take shape into new art creations.
The two large agricultural buildings, the Contemporary spaces and the incredible light of Aquitaine are the stage where my imagination takes a new impulse, enriching the inspiration of my work.»

[7]
«Perhaps it is a form of idealization, but I think to have found in this region of Europe a reconstruction of the landscape of Uruguay as I remember it, the same light and the same climate.
Gradually project-by-project together with Freek, we have attracted a heterogeneous audience, where international collectors are mixed with faithful visitors from Paris and Bordeaux, together with local public.
Without ignoring the dark surprises that future can bring, I wish to say that through my work and our life, I feel a unique feeling of happiness. Many wonderful encounters and deep friendships help in a fundamental way to increase the pleasure of being alive.
I also believe that behind the images of my current work, there is the presence of everything I generously received from José Gurvich.»

I'm impressed! A very beautiful, dynamic and adventures painting. A turtle on a Journey, determined to reach the end of his adventure, no mater what. Nothing is going to stop him. Carrying his shield (and home) proudly.
The way he looks in both wise and determined... well that is what I see in the painting. Reflect onto myself.
Thanks very much for all the effort and inspiration that was put into the painting. Frank Claessen
