Megan con su obra / with her work "Favor"

"Despliegue / Unfurling", carboncillo sobre papel / charcoal on paper, 28" x 22", 2016

"Flores sin recipiente / Flowers Without Vessel", óleo sobre lienzo / oil on canvas, 14" x 18", 2018

"Defensa / Fend", óleo sobre lino / oil on linen, 48" x 36", 2019

"Denise", carboncillo / charcoal

"Resistencia / Resiliencia / Resistance / Resilience", óleo sobre lienzo / oil on canvas, 48" x 60", 2017

"Y así pasó / And So It Went", carboncillo / charcoal

"Bandada / Flock", óleo sobre Dibond / oil on Dibond", 48" x 36", 2019

"Figura / Figure", grafito y tiza sobre papel / graphite and chalk on paper, 22" x 15", 2019

Megan trabajando en "Fe" / at work with "Faith"

Megan Elizabeth Read is an American artist living and working in Charlottesville, Virginia. Though largely self-taught she began drawing at a young age and was introduced to oil painting quite early as well. Over the past years, her focus has shifted sharply from drawing to painting and she now works almost exclusively in oil with pieces ranging from small still life to large scale paintings focusing on the female form. Mae has exhibited nationally including multiple solo shows in her region and most recently has been included in “Painting Today/Pintando Hoy” in celebration of International Women's Day at the Museum of Modern Art MEAM in Barcelona, Spain (2019). Her work is held in a number of private collections and has been selected for several issues of PoetsArtists of which she is a member.

"Fe / Faith", óleo sobre lino / oil on linen, 60" x 84", 2019

"Lilly", carboncillo / charcoal

«Over the last few years I have explored primarily the concepts of expansion, contraction, vulnerability, armor, and other contradictory themes such as the perpetual or constant vs the transitory and contemporary. There is often an element of quiet conflict, whether it be simply aesthetic or within the figures represented. I want my work to be both a respite and a surprise when possible. I generally consider my figurative paintings in some ways aspirational portraits of multiple selves: who you are, who you want to be, and all of the “you’’s that must constantly coexist.»

"Flores con recipiente / Flowers With Vessel", óleo sobre lino / oil on linen, 18" x 14", 2019

"Enrrollada / Furling", óleo sobre panel de abedul / oil on birch panel, 48" x 36", 2017

She points out that while her work is hyperrealism, she glosses over (or leaves out entirely) plenty of details—body hair, skin texture, pores. She chooses to obscure eyes and faces with fabrics and positioning; the whole person is never completely visible. It’s a “building up” to reality and not reality itself, she says.
What Read chooses to leave out is as significant as what she chooses to include, begging a close look at the subject while also denying the viewer ultimate closeness. Her paintings balance on the precipice of extraordinary intimacy, stopping just shy of the kind of closeness that makes Read—and most of us—uncomfortable. They represent, Read says, both a craving for and fear of vulnerability and being seen.

"Estudio de retrato de múltiples yoes (1) / Portrait of multiple selves study (1)"
Óleo sobre lino / oil on linen, 18" x 24", 2019

"Vuelo / Flight", óleo sobre panel / oil on panel, 10" x 10", 2018

«My tendency is always to create excessively refined work and I am playing with loosening up and working with paint in new ways for me, get back to some charcoal and pencil work, and generally allowing myself to cycle through single concepts/narratives in a number of different ways with the understanding that this can all still lead to final larger paintings.»

"Esperando / Waiting", carboncillo sobre papel / charcoal on paper

"Flores con recipiente / Flowers With Vessel", óleo sobre lino / oil on linen, 14" x 18", 2018

«I have larger paintings that I have worked on over 6 months and put hundreds of hours into and I really enjoy working that way but am also trying to diversify a bit and complete smaller studies and sketches in between larger works. I will definitely continue to create these large detailed paintings but I’m also aware that not everyone has the budget – or frankly wallspace! – for that kind of work and it’s nice to be able to play with smaller pieces that I can complete in a day or two without having to invest so much into each one.»

"Llegando a ser / Becoming", óleo sobre panel / oil on panel, 48" x 36", 2018
