Primero de un par de posts en los que recorremos la sorprendente obra del sueco Markus Åkesson. Sus personajes, muchas veces modelados a partir de miembros de su entorno, nos interpelan con expresiones enigmáticas en atmósferas densas y poéticas que juegan con nuestra percepción arrastrándonos a interpretaciones inciertas. En sus pinturas más recientes presenta una galería de figuras completamente cubiertas de tejidos estampados con intrincados diseños, representados con una minuciosidad exquisita.
En esta primera parte acompaño las imágenes con extractos de entrevistas en las que Markus nos desvela algunas claves de su trabajo. En la segunda, una selección de algunas reseñas y textos críticos.
First of a couple of posts in which we go through the surprising work of the Swedish Markus Åkesson. His characters, many times modelled from members of his environment, challenge us with enigmatic expressions in dense and poetic atmospheres that play with our perception dragging us to uncertain interpretations. In his most recent paintings he presents a gallery of figures completely covered with fabrics patterned with intricate designs, represented with an exquisit thoroughness.
In this first part I accompany the images with extracts from interviews in which Markus reveals some keys about his work. In the second one, a selection of some reviews and critical texts.

Nacido en 1975, Markus Åkesson es un pintor neofigurativo en la escena internacional. Su obra se ha expuesto en galerías e instituciones de París, Berlín, Bruselas, Londres, Vilnius y Estocolmo. Vive y trabaja en Pukeberg, en Nybro, Suecia, y su casa y estudio están enclavados en el bosque, donde es libre de explorar los motivos que relacionan al hombre con la naturaleza y esta con el mundo invisible. Su obra es popular en colecciones públicas y privadas tanto en Europa como en los Estados Unidos.

«Empecé a exponer muy localmente, en bibliotecas y este tipo de lugares. Luego pasé a exponer en galerías, localmente al principio pero luego más a nivel nacional y eventualmente internacional. Es un viaje lento pero también muy educativo y humilde. Estoy muy agradecido por las grandes oportunidades que se me han dado. «Creo que la ambigüedad es importante para una obra. Empuja al público a llenar los huecos y hace que la experiencia sea más fuerte. El arte es siempre, hasta cierto punto, un diálogo con el público.
A mí, personalmente, me gusta mantener en mi obra asuntos para los que no sé las respuestas, de alguna manera le da a la obra la capacidad de vivir su propia vida. (Artefact)»

«Creo que es un proceso lento a lo largo del tiempo para encontrar lo que es interesante. Empiezo a trabajar con algo que me lleva a otra cosa y así sucesivamente. Born in 1975, Markus Åkesson is a neofigurative painter on the international stage. His work has been shown in galleries and institutions in Paris, Berlin, Brussels, London, Vilnius and Stockholm. Living and working in Pukeberg in Nybro, Sweden, his home and studio are nestled in the woods where he is free to explore motives which relate man to nature and nature to the world unseen. His work is popular in public and private collections both in Europe and in the US.

«I started to exhibit very locally, at libraries and these kind of venues, then moved on to exhibit at galleries, locally at first but then more nationally and eventually internationally. It is a slow journey but also a very educational and humbling one. I am very grateful for the great opportunities I have been given. «First of all, [I work with] oil paintings, but from time to time, it´s nice to work with sculptures. The reason why I work with glass as a material, is because I actually started out as a glass engraver when I was in my twenties, before I was an artist.
