Arte y odontología / Art and Dentistry (II)

What in its beginnings was a proposal by Shirley Rebuffo to dedicate a post to art related to dentistry has become, thanks to meticulous searches for material on the net (one thing leads to another) in a miniseries in which we compile works of an artistic nature in which different elements related to this discipline are represented. Without wishing to be extraordinarily exhaustive in the analysis, we are interested in presenting a more or less chronological selection of visual records in which the subject is dealt with in some way, focusing basically on painting and some other graphic representations of interest.
In this second chapter, images of illuminated codices and manuscripts, with special attention to the figure of Saint Apollonia, patron saint of dentistry, whose martyrdom was frequently depicted in miniatures and all kinds of paintings and illustrations.

Códice Nicetas / Niketas Codex

"Códice Nicetas / Codex Niketas"
Hippocratis Chirurgica (Ippokratous Cheirourgika)
Seu potius veterum chirurgorum insignis collectio. 25 x 36 cm., 1001-1100. Plut. 74.7, f.198v
Biblioteca Medicea Laurentiana (Firenze / Florencia, Italia / Florence, Italy)

Fuente

The earliest surviving illustrated surgical codex was written and illuminated in Constantinople for the Byzantine physician Niketas (Nicetas) about 900 CE. It contains 30 full-page images illustrating the commentary of Apollonios of Kition on the Hippocratic treatise On Dislocations (Peri Arthron) and 63 smaller images scattered through the pages of the treatise on bandaging of Soranos of Ephesos. The Apollonian paintings represent various manipulations and apparatus employed in reducing dislocations; each of the images is framed in the Byzantine style in an archway of ornate design.

According to Vivian Nutton's article on the codex in Grafton et al eds., The Classical Tradition (2010) 638, the Nicetas codex "was included in the library of the Orphanage of Alexius Comnenus, and later in that of the Hospital of the Forty Martyrs." In 1492 or 1495 Greek scholar Janus Laskaris purchased the Nicetas Codex in Crete for Lorenzo de' Medici. By 1530 it belonged to Guilio de' Medici, Pope Clement VII, "who loaned it back to Lascaris for a proposed and never completed edition of the medical and surgical texts it contained. From a copy made by Lascaris, now in Paris in the Bibliothèque Nationale, Ferdinando Balami produced the first Latin translation of Galen's On Bones (1535). This copy, illuminated by Santorinos of Rhodes, entered the library of Cardinal Ridolfi, who arranged for yet a third copy to be prepared by Christoph Auer and sent as a present to Francis I in 1542. This volume, now also in the Bibliothèque Nationale, was taken to Paris by a young Florentine doctor Guido Guidi, who had prepared a Latin translation of the surgical texts" (Nutton, op. cit.) The original Nicetas codex was later acquired by Cardinal Nicolas Rudolfi, and is preserved in the Laurentian Library (Biblioteca Laurenziana, Plut. 74.7 [Codex Niketas]). Source

The encyclopedia extends to 1100 folia and includes more than 650 illustrations. Entries cover a variety of topics, including theology, natural history, geography, and historical figures, with a particular interest in canon law. Entries appear in alphabetical order (or at least, grouped by their first letter). Although some form of similar alphabetical arrangement had already been in use in various types of texts since the late twelfth century (see, for example, Thomas of Ireland's Manipulus Florum), Omne Bonum is the earliest surviving encyclopedic work to have alphabetized topics of various subject matters together, rather than employing an overall thematic or hierarchical structure. Santa Apolonia / Saint Apollonia

Zurbarán en "El Hurgador" / in this blog: [Recolección (XI)], [Asonancias (XXIV)], [Asonancias (XXVII)]

Saint Apollonia (Apollonia of Alexandria) is considered the patron saint of dentistry, and her feast day is celebrated on February 9.
Under the rule of Emperor Philip the Arab, the premise was to persecute, retaliate and torture Christians and this was done in Alexandria (eastern part of the empire). In one of these actions (around the year 249, 3rd century A.D.), the soldiers captured Apollonia, an elderly virgin Deaconess and tortured her so that she would repent of her Christian faith and worship the pagan gods. When she refused, she suffered the wrath of the Alexandrian mob, who beat her, losing most of her teeth, and the rest were pulled out as torture. According to the account of Dionysius, bishop of Alexandria (247-265), in a letter addressed to the bishop of Antioch preserved in the Eusebius Historia Ecclesiae (I: vi: 41):

"At that time Apollonia, parthénos presbytis (mostly likely meaning a deaconess) was held in high esteem. These men seized her also and by repeated blows broke all her teeth. They then erected outside the city gates a pile of wood and threatened to burn her alive if she refused to repeat after them impious words (either a blasphemy against Christ, or an invocation of the heathen gods). Given, at her own request, a little freedom, she sprang quickly into the fire and was burned to death."

Pergamino / parchment, 112h, 25 x 17 cm., s.XV. f.109v

BDH

A work of extraordinary interest made for Charles VIII in the Parisian workshop of Antoine Verard, whose portrait appears in h. 112r. and his anagram in h. 112v. It has 16 full-page miniatures and as many half-page miniatures, as well as other smaller ones that illustrate the calendar and the borders of all the leaves. The one depicting Louis XII in prayer stands out, and behind him, standing, Charlemagne; the head of Louis XII replaces that of Charles VIII, which originally appeared in the composition (h. 13v).
It seems that Louis XIII gave the codex to a Spanish personage, ambassador of France or confessor of Queen Anne. It later belonged to the Count of Peñaranda and the Marquis of Mejorada, passing to the Royal Library in 1708. BDH

British Library (Londres, Reino Unido / London, UK). BL

BL

A highly decorated French Book of Hours, commissioned by Jean d’Orléans (d. 1471), Count of Dunois.
Among the book’s extensive decoration, which appears on nearly every page of the manuscript, there are sixty full-page illustrations, painted in colours and gold and accompanied by large decorated initials and borders. The subjects of these illustrations include scenes from the Life of the Virgin and the Life of Christ; portraits of the Four Evangelists and other Christian saints; a representation of the Office of the Dead; and personifications of the Seven Vices.
A French inscription added to the manuscript in the 16th century indicates that after Dunois’s death in 1471, the Book of Hours was given to his nephew, the future King of France, Louis XII (r. 1498–1515). It later came into the possession of the book collector Abbé Fauvel, chaplain to Louis XIV (r. 1643–1715) and Louis XV (r. 1715–1774). BL

Getty

Charles the Bold, duke of Burgundy and son of bibliophile Philip the Good, saw many of his father's unfinished book commissions through to completion; this prayer book is one of the rare commissions Charles initiated himself. The accounts of the Burgundian dukes record payments in 1469 to the scribe Nicholas Spierinc of Ghent, to the illuminator Lieven van Lathem of Antwerp, and to the goldsmith who made the original clasps for the binding of this costly book. Along with Lathem, several anonymous illuminators collaborated on this project, including the Vienna Master of Mary of Burgundy. In the 1480s, a series of additional prayers with miniatures by a French illuminator was added to the volume. Getty

Graff, Becker and TT, presents three dogs of different breeds. Green is no longer the main colour, and shades of brown and purple highlight the different characteristics of the dogs. Zhou also leaves a trail of drippings that become formal elements of his paintings. The visual effects are expressionistic, bringing out the raw and savage energy of man's best friend.

Yo soy Kahn (Retrato de perfil de Kahn) / I am Kahn (Profile Portrait of Kahn)"
Óleo sobre lienzo / oil on canvas, 150 x 120 cm., 2007. Christie's

In I am Kahn (profile portrait of Kahn), Zhou Chunya resorts to rubbing, scraping, and curvilinear brushwork to outline the green dog. The dense twist of strokes fill the piece with 'rhythmic rise and fall.'
The genitalia of the green dog is painted bright red to highlight the animal's primal nature. Zhou is fascinated by the purity and primeval strengths of the animal. He outlines the form of the dog with Realistic, simple brushstrokes and sharp, bright colours, so that the work becomes a visual extension of Realism. It acknowledges the canines as men's best friend, and their primitive bestiality.

"两只T T / Dos TT / Two TT", óleo sobre lienzo / oil on canvas, 200 x 250 cm., 2007. Christie's

Two TT distinguishes itself from Zhou's previous green dogs paintings and the "V" shape is neither the English alphabet nor a junction of parallel lines. It is actually a combination of two dogs that denotes the artist's definition of art and life that is often seen in the theme of his works. The inventive use of leaving background blank sets the green dogs against a white backdrop, stressing the power of colours and volume of sculpture. The objects are presented in a way similar to the setting of minimalist sculptures in front of a white background to offer a deeper and pure experience for viewers. Zhou Chunya employs his unique artistic expression in converting the use of white space in traditional Chinese paintings. Inserting itself as an indomitable state of existence that makes Green Dogs Series a representation of existentialism and symbolism, Two TT reveals the existence of individuals and true philosophy in life.

Venimos de Alemania / We Come from Germany"
Óleo sobre lienzo / oil on canvas, 200 x 250 cm., 2008. Christie's

In We Come From Germany, Zhou re-enforces the combination of traditional Chinese painting with buoyant brushstrokes in shades of red and green that best displays the artist's expressionistic style. Zhou has stated that the colour green "contains a tranquillity right before an explosion," and the sitting dogs against the white, desolate background projects a sense of uncertainty, representative of the realities in life. While Heigen and Zhou's friendship was short, the canine companion represented the heart of his subjects, and his evolution as a subject is the core of Zhou's artistic progression. Painted in 2008, Heigen re-emerges onto Zhou's canvas again in We Come From Germany, no longer present to serve his master in his study of artistic practice, but becomes a projection of the artist himself, released to be a freer spirit as he looks out of the canvas to viewers.

Fuente

In a genre where elegance and the portrayal of an ideal serene life dictate aesthetic and fashion, Li Jin’s paintings exude a crude sense of reality rarely seen in mainstream Chinese ink paintings. On first impression, it would be all too easy to discount Li Jin as merely another vulgar genre artist, but repeated inspection rewards the viewer with greater depths. Born to a traditional Chinese family in 1958, Li’s background reflects quite a different upbringing. He received formal training in ink painting at the Tianjin Academy of Fine Arts; the renowned portrait painter Zhou Sicong, Li’s aunt, influenced his early artistic directions. Li’s journeys to the Dunhuang caves in 1981 and Tibet in 1984 opened his eyes to Tibetan culture. Tibet, its sun, colours and people, has had a lifelong influence on Li’s art, empowering it with optimism and richness. Source

Li’s typical compositions are packed with semi-naked figures and food, symbolising sex and nourishment, the two primal indulgences of life. The “excess” of things implies a sense of vanity, hedonism and conspicuous consumption commonly displayed in contemporary China. This busy, colourful style relates to Li’s spacious home where he hosts large banquets among friends. A stark contrast can be seen in his works from the 1990s, when Li was living in a small hutong, which often depict a lonesome figure doing household chores or smaller gatherings in a courtyard.
Amid the laughter and lavishness, Li suggests that physical enjoyment may be transient. His concern for mortality is hinted at in the lack of facial expression in his figures, suggesting a fleeting sense of fear. In portraying this unembellished reality with humour, Li’s paintings infuse a sense of positivity and resonate with the spirit of a daily life that is filled with contrasting emotions. Source

Zeng Fanzhi

Zeng Fanzhi. Foto / Photo NYT China

Wikipedia (English)

Serie "Máscara" Nº 9 / Mask Series # 9
Óleo sobre lienzo / oil on canvas, 169 x 144 cm., 1996. Christie's

Serie "Máscara" Nº 9 / Mask Series # 9 (detalle / detail)

Óleo sobre lienzo / oil on canvas, 169 x 144,3 cm., 1998. Christie's

Zeng Fanzhi (曾梵志) is a contemporary Chinese artist born in 1964, based in Beijing.
From the earliest stages of his career, his paintings have been marked by their emotional directness, the artist's intuitive psychological sense, and his carefully calibrated expressionistic technique. Moving to Beijing in the early 1990s, Zeng's art displayed an immediate shift, responding to his immersion in a more superficial environment, his seminal Mask series displaying the tensions between the artist's dominant existential concerns and an ironic treatment of the pomposity and posturing inherent to his new contemporary urban life. Throughout, Zeng's expressionistic techniques run counter to such techniques' conventional usage. That is, Zeng's representation of raw, exposed flesh or awkwardly oversized hands is not an attempt at pure emotional expression, but instead play against the superficially composed appearances of his subjects, an ironic treatment of emotional performance as a metaphor for a lost self, of stunted self-realization. Serie "Máscara"/ Mask Series
Óleo sobre lienzo / oil on canvas, 198,7 x 149,4 cm., 1996. Christie's

The iconic Mask series represents the pinnacle of Zeng Fanzhi's creation in the 1990s. This illustrious series describes, reveals, and subverts the traditional genre of portraiture in a manner hitherto unheard of in both the history of Eastern and Western art - focusing exclusively on the masked portrait, the fake face. Since its debut in 1994, Zeng sustained his interest in this theme, elaborating and refining it through carefully calibrated variations. By the time of the creation of Mask Series in 2000, the series manifests a new richness and maturity of expression. The painting, in addition to the established theme of the mask, is now enhanced by the startling expressionist colors and the more eloquent motifs, which subtly recount the artist's experience and understanding of the changes in the Chinese society. It encapsulates, too, Zeng Fanzhi's uniquely individual style of expression within the representation of the ethos of an age.

The well-cut suit, the bright red tie and the shiny leather shoes in Mask Series are the most pronounced motifs of the series. These elements vividly describe a new class of urban dwellers who sought advantage and status after China's economic reform in the 1990s. Zeng's models are invariably dressed in immaculate suits, paired with oddly veinous hands and loudly colored lips - a distincte use of lurid colors that give the canvases an unrealistic touch, implying the hypocritical and superficial values of urban life.

Serie "Máscara" / Mask Series
Óleo sobre lienzo / oil on canvas, 180 x 162 cm., 2000. Christie's

These choices echo the artist's own statement: "I intend to make it distinctly sumptuous, so that it becomes distinctly fictitious, almost resembling a stage backdrop. The way people gesticulate - much like waiting for someone to photograph them - is simply a way of self-comforting. Their hands, too, are a feigned, pompous makeup of the urbanites." To accentuate these ideas, Zeng has, since 2007, introduced discreet new motifs into his works, one of them being the purebred dog. These animals serve as yet another accessory and extension of the figure's desired projected persona; to keep a purebred pet dog was a concrete sign of status, wealth or power. Even so, Zeng's men remain the focus of expression, and the representation of their image and class reflects by implication the drastic social changes taking place. These themes remind the viewer of the group of German expressionist artists in the 1920s, who, like Otto Dix (1891-1969), made the image of middle-class a metaphor for the prevalent feeling of perturbation and moral decadence after the Frist World War.
