Yang Yu-tang, un artista de la pluma, nació en Chung-chuen, una ciudad de la región nororiental de China. Chung-chuen es una ciudad próspera de tamaño medio. La gente lleva una vida agradable y tranquila.
Debido a su influencia familiar, Yang comenzó a pintar a los 9 años. Pronto su talento se hizo notorio.
En 1970 se inscribió en un respetado instituto local de estudios medios y se encargo de las publicaciones y relaciones públicas del colegio. Durante este período estudió muchos libros de arte y practicó incansablemente copiando el trabajo de artistas famosos.

En 1972 suspendió en el examen para entrar al colegio de arte.
En 1975 se graduó en la escuela de estudios supriores y fue enviado a trabajar en una granja durante la Revolución Cultural.
En 1979 volvió a suspender un segundo intento para ingresar a un colegio de artes, así que comenzó a trabajar para una empresa de diseño en Chung chuen. Más tarde, tras varios intentos infructuosos de lograr la admisión en una escuela artística, desisitió de la idea de una instrucción formal y se centró en su autoeducación para convertirse en artista. Su trabajo e investigaciones se centraron en la pluma. Como la agencia de diseño para la que trabajaba exigía que todas sus presentaciones y diseños se hicieran a pluma, sus habilidades florecieron naturalmente.

En 1992 estudió en Japón donde le llegaron profundamente las técnicas intensivas y el perfeccionismo de los artistas japoneses.
Regresó a China al año siguiente para dejar su trabajo de diseñador y convertirse en un artista freelance. Realizó un viaje por China durante 8 años para ver a la gente y estudiar los paisajes.
En 2002 regresó a Chung-chuen y comenzó a crear sus propios trabajos, vertiendo en ellos las imágenes de la gente y paisajes de China que lo habían impresionado.
En 2004 publicó dos libros titulados "Detailed Analysis of Penart Technique (Análisis detallados de las técnicas del arte de la pluma)" y "Collection of Penart (Colección de trabajos a pluma)". Ese mismo año presentó trabajos en una exposición en Chung-chuen que tuvo gran éxito en la China Art Gallery.
Los esfuerzos e investigaciones en el arte de la pluma, han promovido esta técnica a un nuevo nivel de conocimiento independiente de otros métodos artísticos.

Yang Yu-tang, a Penart artist, was born in Chung-chuen, a city in the northeast region of China. Chung-chuen is a mid-size, fruitful city with four distinctive seasons. The people are prosperous and lead a nice easy life.
Because of the influence of his family, Yang started painting at the age of nine. Soon his talent in painting was noticeable. 
In 1970 he enrolled in a well respected local middle school, and was responsible for the school's public relation and publication. During this period he studied many art books and practiced tirelessly by copying famous artist's work.

In 1972 he failed the entrance exam to an art college.
In 1975 he graduated high school and was sent to work in a farmer camp during the culture revolution era.
In 1979 he failed on a second entrance exam to an art college where upon he then started working for a design firm in Chung-chuen. Later after several unsuccessful attempts to gain admissions to an art school he gave up on the idea of formal academy training and focused on self-training to become an artist. His art work and research focused on pen work. As the local design firm he worked for required all their presentations and layouts in pen, his Penart skills just naturally flourished.

In 1990 Yang initiated the research of Penart.
In 1992 Yang went to Japan to study art where he was deeply taken by the Japanese artist intensive and perfectionist way of training. 
In 1993 Yang returned to China, quit his long term nice and easy designer job and became a full-time free lance artist. Yang set out on a journey traveling around China; seeing the people and studying the landscapes for eight years.
In 2002 he returned to Chung-chuen and started to create his own work, pouring out the images of the people and landscapes of China that touched him. 
In 2004 he published two books called "Detailed Analysis of Penart Technique" and "Collection of Penart", during that same year he held a personal exhibition in Chung-chuen which was a big success at the China Art Gallery.
In Sep. 2004, "Yutong Yang Realist Penart Picture Show" was held in China gallery.
Yang's effort and research in Penart has helped promote Penart to a new level of awareness independent from other methods of art.
