¿Quieres color? Remarkable works of this artist who paints huge canvases in which the motive is always the same: dramatic self-portraits, heartbreaking, enraged, always naked, always in black and white and, what is more interesting, no brushes, no palette knives: his fingers are the tool. To contemplate his work is a great experience, but greater to see Paolo at work.

Paolo Troilo was born in Taranto in 1972 to Antonio and Lucia Troilo. Lives and works in Milan. From 1997 to 2009 worked as an advertising creative at Saatchi & Saatchi, and as Creative Director at Arnold Worldwide. He won the most prestigious international awards in the industry, and in 2007 was awarded as the best italian creative with Alessandro Sabini. Self-taught, drawing in pencil by the age of 4 years, every day of his life. In April 2005 he began to paint, and as the end of a long, unconscious preparation for a change, he starts painting with his fingers. He dips his fingertips into jars of acrylic, black and ivory, and spreads the color abandoning the "tools of the art". In Palermo, on April 21th of 2010, thanks to Brio, becomes the father of Antoni.

"No matter which direction we choose to look at these works, the theme of the double and of identity, here expressly displayed in concrete figures, is the leitmotiv of an unresolved obsession.
The “multiples of Troilo” leave no respite. Neither to the viewer nor the artist who chose art as the sole means for conveying his message.
We are faced with a painting, in the strictest sense of the word, where technique – having banned brushes, with only hands leaving spots of colour directly on the canvas – is already a tale in itself. The picture, as we said, as medium: the self-portrait returns and acquires the merit that art has ontologically afforded it over the ages. This is not fiction. It is dealing with a film, this time real, summarised in the question of what “Being Paolo Troilo” means for this artist."

Q: What is the ultimate goal of your artwork?
A: Imagine being engrossed in thoughts, or concentrated in front of an event that captures your attention through mechanisms imposed by the habits of society. Imagine that you are in the checkout line at the supermarket, or seated in church, or in a business meeting.
Now imagine someone close to you suddenly stands up and shouts. That someone is me. My work is a wake-up call, and when you finally wake up, imagine realizing that shout was yours.

Q: What artists (musicians, painters, dancers) inspire your work?
A: My ideal Frankenstein uses his legs like Marco Van Basten, moves his body like Mick Jagger, thinks with the brain of Salvador Dali and speaks as Lemn Sissay.

Q: We notice that you only use black and white in your work. What is it about monochromaticism that allows you to portray emotion better than using colors like green, blue, red, etc?
A: I do not ask for help with colors to tell an emotion just as I do not ask for help from individuals other than me to tell emotion. Direct to the point, without chromatic passages, no escape, black on white as a statement of intent, white on black like the reflection that remain in your closed eyes after watching a bright light. Do you need color? Turn on the TV.
