He participated in six of the eight Impressionist exhibitions: 1874, 1877, 1880, 1881, 1882 and 1886.[1] In 1886 he became a friend of Vincent van Gogh whose brother, Theo sold some of his works. Pierre Auguste Cot, French academicist painter born in Bédarieux, 1837.
Cot studied first at l'Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Toulouse before moving to Paris. He studied under Leon Cogniet, Alexandre Cabanel and William-Adolphe Bouguereau. During the 1870s, his popularity began to grow rapidly. In 1874 he was named Chevalier of the Legion of Honor.
He created several works of great popularity, including Le Printemps, in which he portrayed two young lovers, and La Tempête. Both paintings are on display at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, La Tempête belongs to the museum while Le Printemps is part of a private collection.

One of his best known works is "Beethoven." He died in 1920.

Jasper Francis Cropsey (1823 - 1900), an important American landscape artist of the Hudson River School.
As a young boy, Cropsey had recurring periods of poor health. While absent from school, Cropsey taught himself to draw. His early drawings included architectural sketches and landscapes drawn on notepads and in the margins of his schoolbooks.
Trained as an architect, he set up his own office in 1843. Cropsey studied watercolor and life drawing at the National Academy of Design under the instruction of Edward Maury and first exhibited there in 1844. On February 19 is the birthday of

Gabriele Münter, German expressionist painter and photographer born in Berlin in 1877. After attending an art school for women in Düsseldorf, traveled to the United States and on her return, unable to study at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich as a woman, she enrolled in the progressive art school Phalanx where Vasily Kandinsky worked. She had a relationship with him until 1917.
In 1937 the Nazis banned expose, so she retires from public life. During WWII, hid more than 80 works by her and artists of the Blaue Reiter, saving them from destruction. She gifted in 1957 to the city of Munich, where they are now displayed in the Lenbachhaus.

Formal studies took him first to Bucharest, then to Munich, then to the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris. His abstract style emphasizes clean geometrical lines that balance forms inherent in his materials with the symbolic allusions of representational art. Famous Brâncuși works include the Sleeping Muse (1908), The Kiss (1908), Prometheus (1911), Mademoiselle Pogany (1913) and many others. Considered a pioneer of modernism, Brâncuși is called the patriarch of modern sculpture.

Louisa Matthíasdóttir, Icelandic-American painter born in 1917.
Matthíasdóttir was born in Reykjavík. She showed artistic ability at an early age, and studied first in Denmark and then under Marcel Gromaire in Paris. Her early paintings, dating from the late 1930s, established her as a leading figure in the Icelandic avant-garde community (many of whom met together in a house in Reykjavík called Unuhús). In these paintings, subjects are painted with a broad brush, emphasizing geometric form. These paintings already show much of the character of Matthíasdóttir's mature work, but are more subdued in color.
Her move to New York in 1942 was followed by a period of study under Hans Hofmann, along with other painters including Robert De Niro, Sr. (father of the actor) and Jane Freilicher.
The paintings of Matthíasdóttir's final three decades include Icelandic landscapes, a series of self-portraits, and tabletop still-life arrangements. The landscapes often include charmingly stylized depictions of Icelandic horses and sheep.
