The statue is documented in Rome since the 12th century and was donated to the city by Sixtus IV in 1471, remaining in the Lateran Palace. Throughout the Renaissance it was one of the most admired and copied ancient statues.
The formerly popular title Il Fedele ("The faithful") derived from an anecdote invented to give this intimate and naturalistic study a more heroic civic setting: the faithful messenger, a mere shepherd boy, had delivered his message to the Roman Senate first, only then stopping to remove a painful thorn from his foot: the Roman Senate commemorated the event. Such a story was already deflated in Paolo Alessandro Maffei's Raccolta di statue antiche e moderni... of 1704
Taking into account Hellenistic marble variants that have been discovered, of which the best is the Thorn-Puller from the Castellani collection now in the British Museum, none of which have the archaizing qualities of the bronze Spinario, recent scholarship has tended to credit this as a Roman bronze of the first century CE, with a head adapted from an archaic prototype.
Countless copies and reinterpretations of this piece have been made over time. Here you have a selection of works from different artistic disciplines that have dealt with the theme of The Spinario.

This small clay figurine from the Ionian city of Priene, the “Pompeii of Asia Minor,” is not only one of the most renowned finds from the excavations led by Carl Humann and Theodor Wiegand in 1895–1899: it is one of the most famous ancient terracottas ever found. Its fame is due to the fact that it reproduces a large-scale sculpture as popular in antiquity as in the modern period, the so-called Spinario. And beyond simply copying the illustrious model on a smaller scale, this statuette actually parodies it.
Securely dated by context to the period before 135 BC, this piece is the oldest known version of the lost original statue.

Antonello Gagini was an Italian sculptor of the Renaissance, born in 1478 in Palermo, mainly active in Sicily and Calabria.
Antonello belonged to a family of sculptors and artisans, originally from Northern Italy, but active throughout Italy, including Genoa, Florence, and Rome. The family included his father, Domenico (1449–1492), also a sculptor. Antonello had five sons who were also sculptors: Antonio (or Antonino; 1510s-1574),[1] Fazio (1520s-1567), Giacomo (1517–1598), Giandomenico (1503-1560s), and Vicenzo (1527–1595).
Antonello is said to have aided Michelangelo in the sculptural work on the massive tomb of Pope Julius II in San Pietro in Vincoli, a project now known for the statue of Moses.
One of Antonio Gagini's most notable works is the decorated arch in the Capella della Madonna in the Santuario dell'Annunziata in Trapani which he completed in 1537. Antonello also completed decorative ecclesiastical sculpture in the area of Messina. A large collection of his works including an Annunciation, Madonna with Child, Madonna of the Snow and the Appearance of the Cross to Constantine are now in the Palazzo Abatellis in Palermo. He worked also at the Cathedral of Palermo. Other works were destroyed during earthquakes.
He died in 1536.

Guglielmo della Porta was an Italian architect and sculptor of the late Renaissance or Mannerist period.
He was born to a prominent North Italian family of masons, sculptors and architects. His father Giovanni Battista della Porta was a sculptor. He trained in his uncle's workshop in Genoa and moved to Rome about 1537, where he was very much influenced by Michelangelo. Della Porta provided legs for the Farnese Hercules when it was first excavated; when the original legs were found some years later, Michelangelo recommended that Della Porta's legs be retained, as showing how modern artists were capable of direct comparison with the Ancients. He was appointed to the papal mint in 1547. His prolific output is varied. He began his artistic training under the guidance of his uncle Giovanni Giacomo, who takes him on his construction site of the Cathedral of Milan and assigned him the task of sculpturing and reinterpreting the works of Leonardo da Vinci until about 1530. Later he moved with his uncle in Genoa where he perfected his design under the guidance of the painter Perin del Vaga in the works for Villa del Principe, Palazzo di Andrea Doria.
He died in 1577.

Diana Scultori, Diana Mantuana, or Diana Ghisi was an Italian engraver from Mantua, Italy. She is one of the earliest known women printmakers.
She was one of four children of the sculptor and engraver Giovanni Battista Ghisi. Diana learned the art of engraving from her father and the artist Giulio Romano. She received her first public recognition as an engraver in Giorgio Vasari’s second edition of his Vites (1568). In 1565 she met her first husband, architect Francesco da Volterra (Capriani). The pair moved to Rome by 1575. Once in Rome, Diana used her knowledge of business within the art world to progress her husband's career. Soon after moving to Rome, on June 5, 1575, Diana received a Papal Privilege to make and market her own work. She used the importance of signature and dedication to her advantage. Three years later (1578) she gave birth to her son Giovanni Battista Capriani. Both Diana symbolically and Francesco actively became members of the Confraternity of San Giuseppe during their artistic careers. The last known print by Diana dates 1588. It is unlikely that she created new prints past this time due to the strong emphasis she put on signing and dating her work throughout her career. She married another architect named Giulio Pelosi after Francesco da Volterra's death in 1594.
She died in 1612.

Pieter Claesz was a Dutch Golden Age painter of still lifes, born in Berchem, Belgium, near Antwerp, c.1597.
He became a member of the Guild of St. Luke in 1620. He moved to Haarlem in 1620, where his son, the landscape painter Nicolaes Pieterszoon Berchem was born. He and Willem Claeszoon Heda, who also worked in Haarlem, were the most important exponents of the "ontbijt" or dinner piece. They painted with subdued, virtually monochromatic palettes, the subtle handling of light and texture being the prime means of expression. Claesz generally chose objects of a more homely kind than Heda, although his later work became more colourful and decorative. Claesz's still lifes often suggest allegorical purpose, with skulls serving as reminders of human mortality. The two men founded a distinguished tradition of still life painting in Haarlem.
He died in 1660.

Thomas Degeorge was a French painter, born in 1786 in Blanzat (Puy-de-Dôme)
From childhood he showed a predisposition for drawing. At the age of eight, he was entrusted to a renowned drawing teacher from Clermont, Gault de Saint-Germain. At twelve he could make portraits that were meticulously executed and looked very much like the model. At sixteen he joined the school of Jacques-Louis David.
Chabrol, then Prefect of the Seine, entrusted him with the creation of several paintings for the churches of Paris. He made frescoes of allegorical figures for the hall of the Commercial Court in Paris, and assisted Vinchon in the execution of the frescoes of the Chapel of St. Maurice in the church of St. Sulpice. He failed, perhaps due to illness, in the competition for the Grand Prix in Rome.
Some time before the Revolution of 1830, the Death of Bonchamps began, the idea of which was a personal choice and not a commission, but the theme, after the events of July, no longer reflected the spirit of the time and interrupted its execution. He did not finish it until 1837 to present it at the Louvre exhibition. For fear of arousing political passions, Montalivet refused, but shortly afterwards he bought the work on behalf of the State, as he appreciated it artistically, and offered it to the town of Clermont-Ferrand. As compensation he entrusted Degeorge with the realization of Christ in the Garden of Olives, for the church of Sancerre.
Around this time, Degeorge left Paris and settled in Clermont. During this period he made many portraits of local personalities, and also painted figures of rural inspiration, such as The Grim Reaper, and The Little Gleaner.
He was a knight of the Legion of Honour and a member of the Academy of Sciences, Fine Arts and Letters of Clermont-Ferrand.
He died in 1854.

- Layla Leiman

«Hulk-like muscle men are a main feature in Czech artist Vojtěch Kovařík's work. Working on huge canvases, Vojtěch's larger-than-life figures are depicted locked in combat and seem to strain against the edges of the composition while they tussle against each other. Their veined flesh and bulging bodies, paintied in shades of emotive colours stand out against the flat colours or patterns of the background. Vojtěch use a technique of spray paint and acrylic to achieve the mottled skin tones and textures that characterise his work. For him, the body and great slabs of flesh and muscle offer infinite artistic interest, whereas the face, limbs and all other features of his figures are rendered in a brusque stylised shorthand. The contrast between these styles creates a brutal naivety, and an unlikely charm and sense of playfulness. The tone of his work sways ambiguosly between violence and silliness. These giant men, fragrantly flauting their masculinity, are in fact caricatures, ridiculous, objects of curiosity. Figures from Greek mythology and imagined and real animals also appear in Vojtěch's paintings as well as pop culture references.» - Layla Leiman
