"La bendita / The Blessed Damozel", óleo sobre lienzo / oil on canvas, 94 x 180 cm., 1895
Collection / Collection Guildhall Art Gallery

one of 11 paintings based on Christina Rossetti's poetry

"Now is Pilgrim Year Fair Autumn's Charge", óleo sobre lienzo / oil on canvas, 85 x 119,5 cm.

"Mediodía tranquilo / Silent Noon", óleo sobre lienzo / oil on canvas, 1894

"Retrato de / Portrait of John Ernest Paul M.D (1867-1914)", pastel, 29,4 x 24,6 cm., 1909

"In memoriam I & II", bronce / bronze, modeladas en yeso / modelled in plaster, 127 cm., Ed. 6, 1981

in the garden of Museum of Fine Arts, Du Musée Avenue, west side, Montreal. Wikimdia Commons

"Búfalo echado / Lying Down Buffalo", bronce / bronze, a / h: 87,6 cm., Ed. 2, 1987
"Búfalo de pie / Standing Buffalo", bronce / bronze, a / h: 147 cm., Ed. 2, 1988
Parque de esculturas Yorkwhire / Yorkshire Sculpture Park (Wakefield, Reino Unido / UK)

"Cuarteto del desierto / Desert Quartet I"
Bronce / bronze, modelado en yeso / modelled in plaster, 130,8 x 124,5 x 87,6 cm., Ed. 6, 1989
Frink entitled these monumenal series of 4 heads, Desert Quartet, because she felt they related to her feeling for the dynamic force between space and containment that she felt when in the Tunisian desert.

"Gran perro / Large Dog", bronce / bronze, modelado en yeso / modelled in plaster, 90,2 cm., 1986

"Caballo / Horse", bronce / bronze, modelado en yeso / modelled in plaster, a / h: 274,3 cm., Ed. 3, 1980

Der./ Right: "El ojo del que mira II / Eye of the Beholder II", 183 x 84 x 37 cm.

National Portrait Gallery (Londres, Reino Unido / London, UK)

"Sir Francis Beaufort", óleo sobre lienzo / oil on canvas, 50,5 x 40,6 cm., 1850
National Portrait Gallery (Londres, Reino Unido / London, UK)

Wikipedia.

Franklin's lost expedition was a British voyage of Arctic exploration led by Captain Sir John Franklin that departed England in 1845. After a few early fatalities, the two ships became icebound in Victoria Strait near King William Island in the Canadian Arctic. The entire expedition, 129 men including Franklin, was lost.
Pressed by Franklin's wife, Jane, Lady Franklin, and others, the Admiralty launched a search for the missing expedition in 1848. Prompted in part by Franklin's fame and the Admiralty's offer of a finder's reward, many subsequent expeditions joined the hunt, which at one point in 1850 involved eleven British and two American ships. Several of these ships converged off the east coast of Beechey Island, where the first relics of the expedition were found, including the graves of three crewmen. Wikipedia.

On November 13 is the birthday of

John Byam Liston Shaw, commonly known as Byam Shaw, British painter, illustrator, designer and teacher born in Madras, British India, in 1872.
Byam Shaw's father John was the registrar of the High Court at Madras. The family returned to England in 1878 where they settled in Kensington. He showed early artistic promise, and in 1887 his work was shown to John Everett Millais, who recommended that the 15-year-old should enter the St John's Wood Art School. There, he first met fellow artists Gerald Fenwick Metcalfe (also born in India) and Rex Vicat Cole. He also met Evelyn Pyke-Nott, his future wife, there. From 1890, Shaw studied at the Royal Academy Schools where he won the Armitage Prize in 1892 for his work The Judgement of Solomon.
Throughout his career Byam Shaw worked competently in a wide variety of media including oils, watercolour, pastels, pen and ink and deployed techniques such as dyeing and gilding. He was influenced by the Pre-Raphaelites and took many of his subjects from the poems of Rossetti. He exhibited frequently at Dowdeswell and Dowdeswell's gallery in New Bond Street, where he had at least five solo exhibitions between 1896 and 1916.
Later in his life his popularity as an artist waned, and he turned to teaching for his living. He taught at the Women's Department of King's College London from 1904 and in 1910, with Rex Vicat Cole, he founded the Byam Shaw and Vicat Cole School of Art later renamed simply the "Byam Shaw School of Art". Evelyn Shaw, his wife, had an active role in the new school, teaching the miniatures class, her area of expertise. Shaw had had a long association with the artist and illustrator Eleanor Fortescue-Brickdale, who taught at the new school.
Shaw died in 1919.

On November 14 is the birthday of

Dame Elisabeth Jean Frink, English sculptor and printmaker born in 1930.
Frink studied at the Guildford School of Art (now the University for the Creative Arts) (1946–1949), under Willi Soukop, at the Chelsea School of Art (1949–1953). Part of a post war group of British sculptors, dubbed the Geometry of Fear school - that included Reg Butler, Bernard Meadows, Kenneth Armitage and Eduardo Paolozzi. Frink’s subject matter included men, birds, dogs, horses and religious motifs, but very seldom any female forms. Bird (1952; London, Tate), one of a number of bird sculptures, and her first successful pieces (also Three Heads and the Figurative Tradition) with its alert, menacing stance, characterizes her early work.
Although she made many drawings and prints, she is best known for her bronze outdoor sculpture, which has a distinctive cut and worked surface. This is created by her adding plaster to an armature, which she then worked back into with a chisel and surform. This process contradicts the very essence of "modeling form" established in the modeling tradition and defined by Rodin's handling of clay.
In the 1960s Frink’s continuing fascination with the human form was evident in a series of falling figures and winged men. While living in France from 1967 to 1970, she began a series of threatening, monumental male heads, known as the goggled heads. On returning to England, she focused on the male nude, barrel-chested, with mask-like features, attenuated limbs and a pitted surface, for example Running Man (1976; Pittsburgh, PA, Carnegie Mus. A.). Frink’s sculpture, and her lithographs and etchings created as book illustrations, drew on archetypes expressing masculine strength, struggle and aggression.
She died in 1993.

On November 15 is the birthday of

James Edward Kelsey, American Abstract Expressionist sculptor born in 1964, best known for creating large stainless steel abstract curvilinear sculptures.
In 1977 his father was hired by Bell Helicopter and moved his family to Tehran, Iran. James was first exposed to the concept of abstract art while living in the Middle East and experiencing the abstract nature of Islamic art.
His family left Iran in 1979 due to the onset of the Iranian revolution.
James discovered his love of creating art in junior high school and experimented with photography, wood shop, ceramics, and a short course in metal casting.
At 18 years old, he became a firefighter in the United States Air Force and was stationed in Aviano, Italy. While living there, he explored much of the art and architecture of Northern Italy, Venice, and Pisa. This is also the first time he met men and women working as full-time artists both has painters and sculptors.
In 1987, he was honorably discharged from the Air Force. Instead of producing art, he enrolled at Big Bend Community College in Moses Lake, Washington to pursue his love of flying.
After College, James moved back to Seattle, Washington with his partner and soon-to-be wife, Misty Devin whom he had met in College and took a variety of jobs (divorced in 2006). In 1996 they moved to Everett, Washington for his partner’s job and while there wrote his yet-unpublished novel, The Last Icon. In 1998 they again moved, this time to Bremerton, Washington.
Upon arriving in Bremerton, James decided to finally ignore much of the advice he had heard throughout his life and pursue his love of art with the goal of making it a career. He enrolled in the welding program at Olympic College. By the end of the two-year program, he had created four significant sculptures including “And He Offered the Moon To the Sky”, his first piece of public art which can currently be seen on the Olympic College campus.
While still taking classes, he secured a job with a local metal fabrication company as their sole welder and honed his skills while continuing his classes.
In 2002, James built his own studio on his property in Port Orchard, Washington.

On November 16 is the birthday of

Stephen Pearce, British portrait and equestrian painter born in 1819.
He was trained at Sass's Academy in Charlotte Street, and at the Royal Academy schools, 1840, and in 1841 became a pupil of Sir Martin Archer Shee. From 1842 to 1846, he acted as amanuensis to Charles Lever, and he afterwards visited Italy. Paintings by him of favourite horses in the royal mews (transferred in 1825 to Buckingham Palace) were exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1839 and 1841, and from 1849, on his return from Italy, till 1885 he contributed numerous portraits and equestrian paintings to Burlington House.
Early friendship with Colonel John Barrow, keeper of the admiralty records, brought Pearce a commission to paint 'The Arctic Council discussing a plan of search for Sir John Franklin.'
Pearce was also widely known as a painter of equestrian presentation portraits and groups, the most important of which is the large landscape 'Coursing at Ashdown Park,' completed in 1869.
Pearce retired from active work in 1888. He died in 1904.

On November 17 is the birthday of

Pierre Mignard, called "Le Romain" to distinguish him from his brother Nicolas Mignard, was a French painter born in 1612 at Troyes.
He came of a family of artists; he also needs to be distinguished from his nephew Pierre (1640–1725), often called "Pierre II" or "Le Chevalier".
In 1630 he left the studio of Simon Vouet for Italy, where he spent twenty-two years, and made a reputation which brought him a summons to Paris. Having found favor with the king, Louis XIV, Mignard pitted himself against Charles Le Brun and declined to enter the Academy of which Le Brun was the head. Mignard also opposed the authority of the Academy.
Mignard spent most of his time painting portraits. Among his models were Turenne, Molière, Bossuet, Maintenon (in the Louvre), La Vallière, Sévigné, Montespan, Descartes (in Castle Howard).
With the death of Le Brun in 1690, the situation changed. Mignard succeeded to all the posts held by his opponent. He died in 1695 at Paris as he was about to begin work on the cupola of the Invalides. His best compositions have been engraved by Audran, Edelinck, Masson, Poilly and others.
There is a good selection of works by Pierre, Nicolas, and Pierre II in Avignon at the Musée Calvet. The Courtauld Institute of Art (London), Harvard University Art Museums, the Hermitage Museum, the Honolulu Museum of Art, Kunst Indeks Danmark, the Louvre, Musée d'Art et d'Histoire (Geneva), Musée des Augustins (Toulouse, France), Musée Ingres (Montauban, France), Museo Lombardi (Parma, Italy), the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, the National Gallery, London, the National Portrait Gallery, London, the North Carolina Museum of Art, the Portland Art Museum and Versailles are among the public collections holding works by Pierre Mignard.
He died in 1695.

On November 18 is the birthday of

Percy Wyndham Lewis, English painter and author born in 1882.
He was a co-founder of the Vorticist movement in art, and edited the literary magazine of the Vorticists, BLAST.
Mainly residing in London from 1908, Lewis published his first work (accounts of his travels in Brittany) in Ford Madox Ford's The English Review in 1909. He was a founder-member of the Camden Town Group in 1911. In 1912 he exhibited his Cubo-Futurist illustrations to Timon of Athens (later issued as a portfolio, the proposed edition of Shakespeare's play never materialising) and three major oil paintings at the second Post-Impressionist exhibition. This brought him into close contact with the Bloomsbury Group, particularly Roger Fry and Clive Bell, with whom he soon fell out. In 1912 he was commissioned to produce a decorative mural, a drop curtain, and more designs for The Cave of the Golden Calf, an avant-garde cabaret and nightclub on London's Heddon Street.
It was in the years 1913-15 that he developed the style of geometric abstraction for which he is best known today, a style which his friend Ezra Pound dubbed "Vorticism."
After becoming better known for his writing than his painting in the 1920s and early 1930s, he returned to more concentrated work on visual art, and paintings from the 1930s and 1940s constitute some of his best-known work. The Surrender of Barcelona (1936-37) makes a significant statement about the Spanish Civil War.
Lewis wrote 40 books. He died in 1957.

Today, November 19, is the birthday of

Knut Steen, Norwegian sculptor born in 1924.
Steen was born in Oslo but lived in Italy from 1973 until his death.
Steen is perhaps best known for his work on the Norwegian National Academy of Fine Arts in conjunction with the Danish sculptor Per Palle Storm. In 2000, he was commissioned to create a statue of King Olav V of Norway, which became the subject of great controversy. At a cost of NOK 2 million (US$317,000), Steen based his statue on a photo of the king in military garb and depicted him in a serious pose with his right arm raised. This drew the ire of critics, who compared it with similar statues of dictators. Eventually, the Oslo City Council rejected the work, and the statue was later installed in Gulen.
A museum dedicated to his work opened in Sandefjord in 2009. Steen's manager and daughter, Hege Steen, said "We are glad that it has been possible to bring several of Knut’s works together at one place in his native country".
He died in 2011.
