On June 11 is the birthday of

William Baziotes, American painter born in 1912 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, influenced by Surrealism and was a contributor to Abstract Expressionism.
Baziotes began his formal art training in 1933 at the National Academy of Design in New York City where he graduated in 1936. He studied with Charles Curran, Ivan Olinsky, Gifford Beal, and Leon Kroll. Baziotes taught through the Federal Art Project in from 1936-1938 and worked on their WPA Easel Project from 1938-1940.
In the 1940s he became friends with many artists in the emerging Abstract Expressionist group. Although he shared the groups' interest in primitive art and automatism, his work was more in line with European surrealism. Later in his career he taught extensively.

His first solo exhibition was at Peggy Guggenheim's Art of This Century Gallery in 1944. With David Hare, Robert Motherwell, and Mark Rothko, Baziotes founded the Subjects of the Artist School in New York in 1948. He also taught at the Brooklyn Museum Art School, People's Art Center, the Museum of Modern Art, and at the City University of New York, Hunter College and New York University in Manhattan during the last ten years of his life.
Baziotes and his wife Ethel, whom he married in 1941, lived in the Morningside Heights area of northern Manhattan until his death from lung cancer in June 1963, aged 50. During his lifetime, he and his wife shared a love of ancient Greek art and sculpture as well as the poetry of Charles Baudelaire. Many of his paintings are inspired by the latter's poetry as well as by ancient art.
Some of his famous works are Aquatic, Dusk, and The Room, all of which are in the Guggenheim Museum in New York.

On June 12 is the birthday of

Adriaen (or Adriaan) van Stalbemt (or Stalbempt), Flemish painter and printmaker born in 1580 in Antwerp.
After the fall of Antwerp in 1585, his family moved for religious reasons to Middelburg. There he probably received his artistic training.
He returned to Antwerp after 1609, probably after the entry into effect of the Twelve Years' Truce, which heralded a cessation of hostilities between the Habsburg rulers of Spain and the Southern Netherlands and the Dutch Republic. He was admitted in 1610 as a master of the Antwerp Guild of St Luke. In 1617 he was elected dean of the Guild. In this role he was able to obtain the reinstatement of certain privileges of the chamber of rhetoric the Violieren, which was linked to the Guild. He established himself as a painter of landscapes but was also a capable staffage and animal painter. He worked on commissions for the art dealer Peter Goetkint II for whom he made cabinet paintings, i.e. small paintings on copper that were integrated into cabinets.
After his wedding with Barbara Verdelft, daughter of the art dealer Jan Verdelft, the artist's career started to take off and the family was able to establish themselves in the fashionable city centre on the Meir. In 1616 Hans Mesmaeckers is registered as his pupil.

In 1633 the artist was active in London for about ten months. Cornelis de Bie reported that King Charles I of England had invited the artist to England.
The artist had converted back to Catholicism upon his wedding but had returned to the Protestant faith shortly before his death in 1662.
Adriaen van Stalbemt was a versatile artist who was active as a painter as well as a printmaker. He was mainly known for his landscapes which typically included religious, mythological and allegorical scenes. Only a small number of his works is dated which makes it difficult to establish a chronology. One of the reference works for attributions is the Feast of the Gods in the Gemäldegalerie Alte Meister in Dresden, which is signed and dated 1622.
His style has been described as eclectic, as it shows the influences of various artists such as Jan Brueghel the Elder, Jan Brueghel the Younger, Hendrick van Balen, Paul Bril and Adam Elsheimer. His landscapes are also influenced by Gillis van Coninxloo.

On June 14 is the birthday of

Jan Sobczyński, Polish painter born in 1918 in New York, USA, a son of Polish emigrants, soldier during World War II, creator of battle paintings and expressionist urban landscapes.
Soon, after the death of his mother, he returned to Poland under the care of his aunt and settled in Lviv. He studied and raised there until the outbreak of World War II and the invasion of the Soviet Army on Poland. Shortly thereafter, he was arrested and deported to Siberia.
In 1941 (as many exiled Poles) he was incorporated into the Second Polish Army formed in the Soviet Union. He took part in 394 combat missions of the squadron of light bombers supporting operations on the Eastern Front. Awarded with the Cross of Valor and the Order of the Rebirth of Poland.
His sketches and drawings from the war period have not survived. After the war, he began studying at the Faculty of Painting at the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw under the supervision of professors Bolesław Kuźmiński, Michał Bylina and Ludwik Maciąg.

The first oil paintings of Jan Sobczyński come from the late 1940s. Their characteristic feature is the rich texture resulting from the application of paint to the canvas with a spatula. Later, the artist used the brush as smoothly as a spatula. His paintings are kept in vivid colors. The texture created by thickly applied paint is accompanied by a clear, harmonized color. The dominating theme of his paintings is the cityscape; especially small towns of Silesia and Pomerania, and battle scenes. Triptych Battle of the Bzura was awarded during the exhibition in Zachęta in 1985 and is in the collection of the Ministry of National Defense.
Jan Sobczyński lived in Warsaw, he married and raised two children; Iwona and Radosław. He visited the United States several times, which resulted in images from Colorado and Kansas City.
He died in 2007.

Russell had met Vincent van Gogh in Paris and formed a friendship with him. Van Gogh spoke highly of Russell's work, and after his first summer in Arles in 1888 he sent twelve drawings of his paintings to Russell, to inform him about the progress of his work. Claude Monet often worked with Russell at Belle Île and influenced his style, though it has been said that Monet preferred some of Russell's Belle Île seascapes to his own. Due to his substantial private income Russell did not attempt to make his pictures well known.
In 1897 and 1898 Henri Matisse visited Belle Île. Russell introduced him to impressionism and to the work of van Gogh (who was relatively unknown at the time). Matisse's style changed radically, and he would later say "Russell was my teacher, and Russell explained colour theory to me."
Russell was a friend of Auguste Rodin and Emmanuel Frémiet, and his wife's beauty is immortalised in Rodin's Minerve sans Casque and Fremiet's Joan of Arc. His portrait of van Gogh, painted about 1886-87, was acquired by the Van Gogh Museum, at Amsterdam in 1938.
Russell returned to Sydney in old age, where he died in 1930. His works are held in major galleries in his home country and in Europe.

"Desnudo / Nude", óleo sobre lienzo / oil on canvas, 51,5 x 67,5 cm., 1892. ARC

Today, June 17, is the birthday of

Louis-Joseph-Raphaël Collin, French painter born in 1850 in Paris, where he became a prominent academic painter and a teacher. He is principally known for the links he created between French and Japanese art, in both painting and ceramics.
Collin studied at the school of Saint-Louis, then went to Verdun where he was at school with Jules Bastien-Lepage; they became close friends. Collin then went to Paris and studied in the atelier of Bouguereau and then joined Lepage at Alexandre Cabanel's atelier where they both worked alongside Fernand Cormon, Aimé Morot and Benjamin Constant. Collin painted still-lives, nudes, portraits and genre pieces, and preferred to render his subjects en plein air with a clear and luminous palette.
Around 1873 he began successfully exhibiting at the Salon. He won a number of prizes that helped launch his career, and before long he was receiving increasingly prestigious commissions to paint large scale murals in major public buildings around Paris, including some of the most prominent cultural centers of Paris: the Hôtel de Ville, the Théatre de l'éon, and the Opéra-Comique. He provided designs for decorative plates made by Théodore Deck.

Collin's early work closely followed the essential tenets of French academism. Like the Renaissance painters they admired, the nineteenth-century academicians used historical, religious, or allegorical painting to communicate an idea. Within the parameters of this literary art, Collin made subtle modifications to the accepted academic style, introducing elements of the impressionist technique into his allegorical scenes. Such formal techniques as formal composition and bright color evoked the light filled landscapes of impressionism rather than the dark chiaroscuro of Renaissance painting.
During the last few decades of the nineteenth century, academic painting in France was in crisis, eclipsed by the new artistic movements of impressionism and symbolism. Collin's friendship with members of the impressionists provided him with insights into the new direction contemporary painting was taking. He adapted his work accordingly and in such paintings as Young Woman, he found a compromise between the academic style and the new painterly innovations of the impressionists and the Nabis. Collin began to emphasize the picture surface by reducing the spatial depth of his paintings as well as composing with areas of concentrated color. Yet he never completely abandoned the hallmarks of academicism: allegory and naturalism.

"Retrato de la belleza / The Beauty Portrait", óleo sobre lienzo / oil on canvas, 1889. ARC

Collin figured prominently in artistic exchanges between Paris and Tokyo during the late nineteenth century as Kuroda Seiki, Kume Keiichirō, and Okada Saburōsuke, among others, studied in his studio and at the Académie Colarossi, where Collin was associated. Kuroda and Kume, who subsequently assumed professorships at the Tokyo Fine Arts School (Tokyo Bijutsu Gakkō), were especially instrumental in introducing to Japan Collin's academic teaching methods as well as the lighter palette, brushwork, and plein air approach he espoused. This mentorship of the first generation of Japanese oil painters contributed to the special respect he continues to enjoy in Japan.
Collin also illustrated many books, notably Daphnis and Chloé (1890) and Chansons de Bilitis (1906).
He died in 1916.
