On October 22 is the birthday of

Achille Etna Michallon, French painter born in 1796 in Paris.
He was the son of the sculptor Claude Michallon. After the death of his mother in 1813, he was raised by his uncle, Guillaume Francin. In 1817, he was the first laureate of the Prix de Rome of historical landscape, instituted in 1816 at the instigation of Pierre-Henri de Valenciennes, of which he was a student. He also studied in the studio of Jacques-Louis David.
He travelled to Italy in 1818 and remained there for over two years. This trip had a profound influence on his work.

Returning to France in 1820, he opened his own studio. Antoine Guindrand was his pupil, as well as Jean-Baptiste Camille Corot who took from his master the attachment to the light, the construction of space and the refusal of the anecdotal. He went with his students to the Fontainebleau forest to paint on the ground. Although neo-classical painter, Michallon is considered one of the precursors of the Barbizon school.
He died in 1822, aged 25, of pneumonia, a tragedy which cut short the life of a talented and well respected artist.

On October 23 is the birthday of

Lawren Stewart Harris, Canadian painter born in 1885 in Brantford, Ontario.
He is best known as a member of the Group of Seven who pioneered a distinctly Canadian painting style in the early twentieth century.
He attended Central Technical School and St. Andrew's College. From age 19 (1904 to 1908) he studied in Berlin. He was interested in philosophy and Eastern thought. Later, he became involved in Theosophy and joined the Toronto Lodge of the International Theosophical Society. Soon after meeting and becoming friends with J. E. H. MacDonald in 1911, they together formed the famous Group of Seven. He financed the construction of a studio building in Toronto with friend Dr. James MacCallum. The Studio provided artists with cheap or free space where they worked.

In 1918 and 1919, Harris financed boxcar trips for the artists of the Group of Seven to the Algoma region, travelling along the Algoma Central Railway and painting in areas such as the Montreal River and Agawa Canyon. In the fall of 1921, Harris ventured beyond Algoma to Lake Superior's North Shore, where he would return annually for the next seven years. While his Algoma and urban paintings of the late 1910s and early 1920s were characterized by rich, bright colours and decorative composition motifs, the discovery of Lake Superior subject material catalyzed a transition to a more austere, simplified style, with limited palettes - often jewel colours with a range of neutral tones. He also stopped signing and dating his works so that people would judge his works on their own merit and not by the artist or when they were painted.

In 1924, a sketching trip with A.Y. Jackson to Jasper National Park in the Canadian Rockies marked the beginning of Harris' mountain subjects, which he continued to explore with annual sketching trips until 1929, exploring areas around Banff National Park, Yoho National Park and Mount Robson Provincial Park. In 1930, Harris went on his last extended sketching trip, travelling to the Arctic aboard the supply ship SS. Beothic for two months, during which time he completed over 50 sketches. The resulting Arctic canvases that he developed from the oil panels marked the end of his landscape period, and from 1935 on, Harris enthusiastically embraced abstract painting. After the disbanding of the Group of Seven in 1933, Harris and the other surviving members including A. J. Casson, Arthur Lismer, A. Y. Jackson, and Franklin Carmichael, were instrumental in forming its successor, the larger national group, the Canadian Group of Painters.
In 1969, he was made a Companion of the Order of Canada.
He died in 1970.

On October 24 is the birthday of

David Roberts, Scottish painter born in 1796 in Stockbridge near Edinburgh.
He is especially known for a prolific series of detailed lithograph prints of Egypt and the Near East that he produced from sketches he made during long tours of the region (1838–1840). These and his large oil paintings of similar subjects made him a prominent Orientalist painter. He was elected as a Royal Academician in 1841.
At the age of 10, he was apprenticed for seven years to a house painter and decorator. The beginning of his career as a painter was as a painter of scenery for James Bannister's circus. In 1819 he became the scene painter at the Theatre Royal in Edinburgh. Although he was making a living from scene painting, it was around 1820 that Roberts began to produce oil paintings seriously. In 1822 the Coburg Theatre, now the Old Vic in London, offered Roberts a job as a scenic designer and stage painter, so he moved there.
In the autumn of 1824 he visited Normandy. His paintings based on this trip began to lay the foundation of his reputation. In 1832 he travelled in Spain and Tangiers. He returned at the end of 1833 with a supply of sketches that he elaborated into attractive and popular paintings.

"El bazar de los cobreros / The Bazaar of the Coppersmiths"

J. M. W. Turner persuaded Roberts to abandon scene painting and devote himself to becoming a full-time artist. Roberts set sail for Egypt on 31 August 1838. His intent was to produce drawings that he could later use as the basis for the paintings and lithographs to sell to the public. Egypt was much in vogue at this time, and travellers, collectors and lovers of antiquities were keen to buy works inspired by the East or depicting the great monuments of ancient Egypt. Roberts made a long tour in Egypt, Nubia, the Sinai, the Holy Land, Jordan and Lebanon. Throughout, he produced a vast collection of drawings and watercolour sketches. On his return to Britain, Roberts worked with lithographer Louis Haghe from 1842 to 1849 to produce the lavishly illustrated plates of the Sketches in the Holy Land and Syria, 1842–1849 and Egypt & Nubia series.

In 1851, and again in 1853, Roberts visited Italy, painting the Ducal Palace, Venice, bought by Lord Londesborough, the Interior of the Basilica of St Peters, Rome, Christmas Day, 1853, and Rome from the Convent of St Onofrio, presented to the Royal Scottish Academy.
His last volume of illustrations, Italy, Classical, Historical and Picturesque, was published in 1859. The last years of his life were occupied with a series of views of London from the Thames.
He died in 1864.

"Chyše / Naturaleza muerta / Still Life"

On October 26 is the birthday of

Zdeněk Rykr, Czech painter, illustrator, journalist and theatre designer born in 1900 in the Chotěboř train station.
When he was seven his family moved to Kolín, where his father, a railway inspector, had been transferred. There was where he spent his childhood and student years. After graduating from the grammar school he was not accepted to the Academy of Fine Arts in Prague, and so he chose to study Art History and Classical archaeology at the faculty of philosophy, where he completed a doctorate in 1924. Despite the knowledge he accumulated during his studies, his artistic abilities were self-taught. At the beginning his artwork is mostly paintings, and subsequently evolves into graphic design.
In 1925 he illustrated Emil Vachek’s Bidýlko and from 1925 to 1927 he was a theatre designer at the National Theatre (Prague). In parallel, he worked as a graphic designer for advertising, for example for the Baťa company. His designs for the Maršner chocolate company, for which he created the blue Orion star for the Kofila chocolate wrapper, are still famous today. He also created designs for the Kolín oil refinery, Kulík coffee, Čedok and [Škoda Auto]
His art gradually strayed from his early paintings realism, and from the 1930s he focused on the creation of assemblages and collages, which foreshadowed his work of the 1960s. He got inspired by his numerous travels across the globe, and was strongly influenced by Surrealism and Oriental Calligraphy.

"Podobizna muže / Retrato de un hombre / Portrait of a Man", 1920. Wikimedia Commons

In the 1920s he also worked as a journalist, contributed to the creation of the satiric magazine Trh, authored pamphlets, and in 1930-31 edited the magazine Domov a svět. His pointed criticism and controversial opinions made him an unpopular figure in the 1920s and 30s. He is associated with the Devětsil generation of avant-garde artists rather as an outsider or lone wolf. He tried on many styles, which he quickly discarded as worthless. His generation saw him as a disjointed eclectic or as the dark conscience of the avant-garde.
At first he exhibited as a guest with the Tvrdošíjni group of painters, and later had several solo shows and even exhibited his work at the [Société des Artistes Indépendants Salon des indépendants in Paris], where unlike in his native country it was a great success.
To avoid the Gestapo he committed suicide by throwing himself under a train at Barrandov, Prague, on 15 January 1940.

On October 27 is the birthday of

Sigrid Hjertén, Swedish modernist painter born in 1885 in Sundsvall.
She studied at the University College of Arts, Crafts and Design in Stockholm and graduated as a drawing teacher. From 1909 she studied under Henri Matisse in Paris, she was impressed by the way he and Paul Cézanne dealt with colour. Hjertén strove to find forms and colours that could convey her emotions. In that respect her work is more closely related to the German Expressionists, such as Ernst Ludwig Kirchner, than to the French painters, with their graceful play of lines.
She returned to Sweden. In 1912 Sigrid Hjertén participated in a group show in Stockholm. It was her debut exhibition as a painter. In the following ten years she took part in many exhibitions both in Sweden and abroad.
Between 1920 and 1932, Sigrid Hjertén and her family lived in Paris, and made many excursions to the French countryside and the Italian Riviera for painting. This was a relatively harmonious era in Hjertén's art, but her exhibits were very limited in this period.

In 1932 she decided to return to Stockholm. But during packing she collapsed. She got to Sweden and was temporarily taken to the psychiatric hospital of Beckomberga with symptoms of schizophrenia. She recovered periodically, and in the following two years (1932–34) Hjertén's artistry culminated in a crescendo, where, like one possessed, she made pictures that expressed strongly loaded feelings. She devoted herself to intensive painting, creating one picture a day, the picture-book of her life, according to an interview in the Swedish art magazine Paletten. Some paintings radiate horror while others give a warm and harmonious impression.

During 1934, she traveled with her family in the south of Europe, where she painted.
She won public recognition only in 1936, when she had a well-received solo exhibition at the Royal Swedish Academy of Arts in Stockholm. "After viewing the nearly 500 works in her 1936 retrospective, the critics were unanimous: the exhibition was hailed as one of the most remarkable of the season and Sigrid Hjerten was honored as one of Sweden's greatest and most original modern artists. Thus, she gained recognition—but too late."
In the late 30s, Sigrid suffered from escalating mental illness, diagnosed with schizophrenia, and was permanently hospitalised at Beckomberga Psychiatric Hospital in Stockholm, where she remained the rest of her life.
She died in 1948.

Heinz Zander

His oil paintings are influenced by mannerism, something he took further than any other German in his generation. His subjects are often drawn from mythology, ancient literature, medieval legends and fairy tales. He has also written novels, short stories and essays.

"Heinz Zander belongs to the second generation of the so-called "Leipzig School". Since his studies at the Leipzig Academy of Visual Arts in the first half of the 1960s, he has been capable of pictorial art that distinguishes him as a virtuoso virtuoso and imaginative fabulizer, seemingly literate through numerous poetic, mythological or philosophical reminiscences. His extensive image oeuvre, now widely distributed in public and private collections, is a significant expression of concern and confusion about the increasing alienation of the individual and the objectification of culture. Zander's outstanding contribution to this theme is an art of stark contrasts, which brings together fairytale and threatening, vital and morbid, seductive and repulsive, in order to juxtapose beautiful appearance with a cruel truth and a fictitious world with the abysses of reality."

"Der Engel John Silver betritt den Strand / El ángel John Silver entra a la playa /
The Angel John Silver Enters the Beach", óleo / oil, 70 x 80 cm., 1990. Erfurt

"Zander's unmistakable pictorial inventions are based on the richness of forms and intellectual content of an opulently staged world theater. A constant change is one of the main features of his art. Through a clever technique of crossing and intersecting the motifs, creating synthetic, often grotesque to gruesome figures and sceneries, he manages to combine many events and layers of meaning simultaneously and in a model. At the same time, Zander's pictures resemble almost extravagant performances of colors and tints, alien and familiar elements of form and decoration, which are often interspersed with highly poetic appearances.
Above all, the Mannerism of the 16th century, the art of the capricious, over-refined or bizarre fantasy shaped sustainable the pictorial basic concept and the artistic self-understanding Zanders. His almost encyclopaedic treasure of knowledge includes other periods of art, as he refers to various achievements of literature and theater in the development of his own creations."
