Es conocido por su habilidad para dibujar un paisaje (especialmente con motivos arquitectónicos o urbanísticos) después de haberlo visto sólo una vez. Estudió Bellas Artes en City & Guilds Art College. Su obra es popular en todo el mundo, y se conserva en un buen número de importantes colecciones.

En 1901, Klimt pintó el Friso de Beethoven para la 14ª exposición secesionista de Viena en celebración del compositor, y presentó una monumental escultura policromada de Max Klinger. Pensado sólo para la exposición, el friso se pintó directamente en las paredes con materiales ligeros. Después de la muestra la pintura se conservó, aunque no se volvió a exhibir hasta 1986. El Friso de Beethoven se encuentra en exhibición permanente en el Edificio de la Secesión de Viena en una sala de sótanos especialmente construida y climatizada. Toda la obra pesa cuatro toneladas.
El friso ilustra el deseo humano de felicidad en un mundo sufriente y tempestuoso en el que uno se enfrenta no solo con las fuerzas del mal externas sino también con las debilidades internas.
In 1901, Klimt painted the Beethoven Frieze for the 14th Vienna Secessionist exhibition in celebration of the composer, and featured a monumental polychrome sculpture by Max Klinger. Meant for the exhibition only, the frieze was painted directly on the walls with light materials. After the exhibition the painting was preserved, although it did not go on display again until 1986. The Beethoven Frieze is on permanent display in the Vienna Secession Building in a specially built, climate-controlled basement room. The entire work weighs four tons.
The frieze illustrates human desire for happiness in a suffering and tempestuous world in which one contends not only with external evil forces but also with internal weaknesses.
