Tanya Miller es una estupenda artista rusa que descubrí a través del trabajo de su padre, el soberbio dibujante, pintor y grabador Sergey Tyukanov. Recientemente tuve oportunidad de disfrutar de algunos de sus trabajos en la Galería Sixty One, en Amsterdam, Holanda.
Tanya Miller is a great Russian artist I discovered through the work of his father, the superb draftsman painter and engraver Sergey Tyukanov. Recently I had a chance to enjoy some of her works in the Sixty One Gallery, Amsterdam, Netherlands.

"Los libros me aportan tantas ideas y excitación que necesito derramarlas en algún sitio. El arte me sirve a éste propósito. Cuando era una estudiante, no había nada mejor para mí que regresar del colegio, coger un libro, taparme con una cálida manta y leer, leer, leer. Los libros me transportan a otros países, otros tiempos.
Puedo vivir a través de otras experiencias y sentir emociones diferentes. Me ayudan a desarrollar mi imaginación y me aportan mucha inspiración para mi arte."

A Tanya le gusta experimentar y probar cosas nuevas, por ello sus obras son tan diferentes. Algunos conceptos son simples travesuras, algunos alegóricos y otros tienen un significado personal y profundo. Pero haga lo que haga, Tanya transmite una emoción o estado de ánimo. Sus ideas le vienen del suconsciente. Primero, visualiza la imagen. Luego la transfiere a su cuaderno de bocetos. A veces puede pasar horas sentada en el sofá en una suerte de ensoñación acerca del concepto. Cuando redondea la idea, hace un boceto de la imagen. Tanya calcula que sólo una de cada 20 ideas plasmadas en su bloc cobra vida.
Tanya dice que cuando crea sus obras de arte, lo importante para ella es que sean significativas, hermosas, positivas y emotivas.
Hermosas, porque hay demasiada fealdad en el mundo. Significativas, porque sin significado, la vida sería algo vacío y sin valor. Positivas, porque el arte positivo es su escape de la dureza de la realidad. Emotivas, porque cuando sentimos estamos vivos.

Un día disfruto mirando a Velázquez, otro día a Picasso, al siguiente a Canaletto. Amo a cada artista y puedo aprender algo nuevo con cada uno. Realmente adoro aprender cosas nuevas. "Amo todas las técnicas. Generalmente cambio entre unas y otras. Por ejemplo, hago una pintura, luego un dibujo y después un grabado. Pero el dibujo es la base para cualquier otra técnica, ya sea pintura, acuarela o grabado. Para mí el dibujo está en la cúspide de mi lista de prioridades. Normalmente antes de hacer una pintura o grabado hago un dibujo monocromo a tinta."

Tanya Miller is a Russian artist born in Khabarovsk in 1979. Now lives and works in Montreal, Quebec, Canada.
Since her early childhood Tanya has been influenced by art and literature. First her father is a well known artist and print maker. Second, she loves to read: "Books give me so many ideas, and emotional excitement that I need to pour them out somewhere. Art serves as best means for that purpose. When I was a student, nothing was better for me than to come back from school, pick-up a book, cover myself with a warm blanket, and read, read, read. Books transport me to other countries, other times. I can live through different experiences and feel different emotions. It helps me to develop my imagination and provides a lot of inspiration in art."

Tanya likes to experiment and try new things, so her artwork is very different. Some concepts are just playful, some allegorical and others have deep, personal meaning. But whatever she makes, Tanya relates to an emotion or mood. Her ideas come from the subconscious. First she visualizes the image, then transfers them into her sketchbook. Sometimes she can sit for hours on the sofa just daydreaming about the concept. When she comes up with the idea she sketches out the image. Tanya calculates that only one out of 20 ideas in her sketchbook will actually come to life.
Tanya Miller tells us that when creating works of art it is important to her that they are meaningful, beautiful, positive and emotional.
Beautiful - because there is too much ugliness in today's world. Meaningful - because without meaning life would be empty and worthless. Positive - because positive art is my escape from the hardship of reality. Emotional - because when we feel we live.

"I love all, completely all artists that have ever existed in the Art History. They all are my favorites. I have a large collection of art books. But drawing is the basis for every other technique be it a painting, watercolor, or an etching. For me drawing is at the top of my priority list. Usually before making a painting or an etching I do a monochrome ink drawing."

P: En tu Autorretrato (2007)... el punto focal es una mujer sentada en una silla rodeada por el caos... ¿Puedes darnos una visión más clara de ésta pieza?
R: Fue un momento muy intenso y difícil en mi vida porque mis niños eran muy pequeños (tengo dos). La rutina diaria y todas las tareas familiares me obligaban a reducir al mínimo el tiempo disponible para el arte. Sentía mucha energía e inspiración dentro de mí, pero sólo podía materializar unas pocas cosas. La tensión interior crecía dentro de mí, y me sentía muy miserable, dividida entre mi deseo interior de crear y la realidad de la "lucha por la supervivencia" cotidiana.
Q: Specifically, your Self Portrait (2007)…the focal point is a woman sitting in a chair while chaos surrounds her…(my observation.) Can you give more insight into this piece?
A: It was a very intense and difficult time in my life because my children were very small (I have two kids). The daily routine and all the family duties I had to do reduced the time for making art to a minimum. I felt so much energy and inspiration inside, but I could materialize only a few things. The tension inside of me was growing and I felt very miserable and torn apart by my inner desires to create and reality of daily “life struggles”.
