On November 1 is the birthday of

Jules Bastien-Lepage, French painter born in 1848 in the village of Damvillers, Meuse, closely associated with the beginning of naturalism, an artistic style that emerged from the later phase of the Realist movement.
Jules Bastien-Lepage's first teacher was his father, himself an artist. His first formal training was at Verdun. Prompted by a love of art, he went to Paris in 1867, where he was admitted to the École des Beaux-arts, working under Cabanel. He was awarded first place for drawing, but spent most of his time working alone, only occasionally appearing in class. Nevertheless, he completed three years at the école.

During the Franco-Prussian war in 1870, Bastien fought and was wounded. After the war, he returned home to paint the villagers and recover from his wound. In 1873 he painted his grandfather in the garden, a work that would bring the artist his first success at the Paris Salon.
His initial success was confirmed in 1875 by the First Communion, a picture of a little girl minutely worked up in manner that was compared to Hans Holbein, and a Portrait of M. Hayern. To the Salon of 1877 he sent a full-length Portrait of Lady L. and My Parents; and in 1878 a Portrait of M. Theuriet and Haymaking (Les Foins). The last picture, now in the Musée d'Orsay, was widely praised by critics and the public alike. It secured his status as one of the first painters in the Naturalist school.
His Portrait of Mlle Sarah Bernhardt (1879), painted in a light key, won him the cross of the Legion of Honour. In 1879 he was commissioned to paint the Prince of Wales.
Between 1880 and 1883 he traveled in Italy. The artist, long ailing, had tried in vain to re-establish his health in Algiers.
He died in Paris in 1884, when planning a new series of rural subjects.

On November 2 is the birthday of

Johan Krouthén, Swedish artist born in 1858 in Linköping.
When he was 14, Krouthén left school and started an apprenticeship with Svante Leonard Rydholm, a photographer and artist, where he learnt the basic skills of both painting and photography. In 1875, at the age 16, he joined the Royal Swedish Academy of Arts in Stockholm where he studied drawing, portrait painting and landscaping. In addition to his education at the Academy, he was also taught by Swedish artist Edvard Perseus who was critical of the Academy and encouraged his students to paint from nature.

"I salongen / En el salón / In the Lounge - Minna & Carl-Fredrik von Malmborg"

Krouthén became acquainted with Oscar Björck and Anders Zorn who also studied at the Art Academy. In the autumn of 1881, when the Academy president, Georg von Rosen, warned Zorn that he was not following the academy's prescribed curriculum, he promptly replied that he would leave. Krouthén, who happened to come into the president's office at the time, also said he would leave.
In 1881, Krouthén spent a short period in Paris, a popular destination for Swedish artists in the 1880s, but he soon returned to Sweden where he painted in Scania and in Bohuslän with its rocky landscapes. His painting of a desolate landscape with a barefoot boy on a dirt track was exhibited in Stockholm in 1883, arousing considerable attention as a result of its realistic, unembellished look.

In the summer of 1883, he joined Oscar Björck at Skagen in the north of Jutland, where there was a small colony of artists from Denmark, Norway and Sweden. He stayed there from May until at least October. After Skagen, Krouthén returned to Linköping and continued to paint landscapes.
During the 1880s he began painting portraits and interiors. Just as in his garden paintings, his interiors often include completely passive figures.
Krouthén's later career, with paintings of red wooden cottages and flowering trees, was rather uninteresting from an artistic point of view. In 1909 he moved to Stockholm with his family, acquiring a studio at Valhallavägen. He exhibited quite often in Stockholm, his main clientele continuing to be from the Linköping area. He was not particularly interested in contemporary art.
He died in 1932.

On November 3 is the birthday of

Loïs Mailou Jones, influential American artist and teacher, during her seven-decade career, born in 1905 in Boston, Massachusetts.
Jones was one of the most notable figures to attain notoriety for her art while living as a black expatriate in Paris during the 1930s and 1940s. Her career began in textile design before she decided to focus on fine arts. Jones looked towards Africa and the Caribbean and her experiences in life when painting. As a result, her subjects were some of the first paintings by an African-American artist to extend beyond the realm of portraiture.
Her style shifted and evolved multiple times in response to influences in her life, especially her extensive travels. She worked with different mediums, techniques, and influences throughout her long career.

Jones was influenced by the Harlem Renaissance movement and her countless international trips. Lois Mailou Jones' career was enduring and complex. Her work in designs, paintings, illustrations, and academia made her an exceptional artist that continues to receive national attention and research.
She felt that her greatest contribution to the art world was "proof of the talent of black artists". She wished to be known as an American painter with no labels. Her work echoes her pride in her African roots and American ancestry.
She died in 1998.
