Some time ago I published a selection of works by the remarkable sculptor from Barcelona Joan Mora, among which is this book tower. The stacked books is quite frequent subject in sculpture, often related with libraries and authors. Here you leave a selection of works.

Wikipedia

 Modern Book Printing

The installation of the statue "Modern Book Printing / Der moderne Buchdruck" took place on April 21, 2006 at Bebelplatz opposite Humboldt University. The assembly of this 12.2 metre high object on the street Unter den Linden took three days.
A steel structure held 17 different-sized shell segments together; each of them representing a single book. Including the stabilizing ballast weight, the tower ended up with an overall weight of 35 tons.
The 17 books were stacked on their sides and bore the names of German poets and writers on their spines; Goethe formed the base as the lowermost book. The sculpture was erected in remembrance of Johannes Gutenberg who invented the modern letterpress in Mainz around 1450 and created the first bestseller in history with the Gutenberg Bible. Of the approximately 180 original copies of the first edition, 48 are known to still exist. Wikipedia

John McKenna is a Scottish sculptor born in 1964 in Manchester.
He moved to Worcestershire where he attended the Royal Grammar School at Worcester. He studied at Middlesex Polytechnic Art College in North London. In 1987 he gained a bursary to study at the Sir Henry Doulton School of Sculpture. From 1990 to 1993 he lectured at Stafford College of further education in figurative classical sculpture and at Worcester College of Technology where he taught three dimensional design. He was elected a member of the Royal British Society of Sculptors in 1993 and from this point on resigned his lecturing duties to become a full-time profession public art sculptor.

This sculpture was commissioned through a limited competition by the Hutchesons' Grammar school, in Glasgow for the centre piece of a memorial courtyard garden at the

school. John McKenna was shortlisted for the commission to create a sculpture to set an existing portrait (Lyons) upon to allow it to be exhibited within a landscaped garden setting. After careful consideration John's water feature design was selected for the existing portrait head which had been lost in long term storage, out of view of the school population but was to be restored. Sir Alexander created a memorial library at Glasgow University which contains his collection of antiquarian books, a source of reference for John's book plinth upon which the Lyon portrait bust rests. Unusual bookbindings and titles of the antiquarian collection were portrayed in McKenna's bronze book stack plinth.

Alan Cotrill
(Zanesville, Muskingum, Ohio, EE.UU./ USA, 1952-)

Algunos de los libros más notables incluyen Huckleberry Finn, The Fountainhead, The Grapes of Wrath y Where the Sidewalk. Biblioteca Coshocton

Cuerpos emergentes / Emerging bodies

As with books, this section begins with a work already published in this blog. In the sculpture "Freedom", by the American Zenos Frudakis, we see a sequence in which a figure emerges from a wall towards freedom. In the work, which the artist created as a vignette in four frames, the subject achieves his goal by freeing himself from solid prison, but in general in this kind of works the bodies appear in an intermediate state in which it is not very clear if they will become disincrusted, generating in the viewer diverse feelings, such as anxiety, anguish and impotence in the face of these uncertain perspectives. And besides ... how did they get there? Who does not remember Han Solo solidified in carbonite in Star Wars? Have they been gestated and given birth by stone or metal, are they going through it, or did they get there being trapped by some unimaginable method?

Jean-Alfred Villain-Marais
(Cherburgo, Francia / Cherbourg, France, 1913 - Cannes, 1998)

The Sparrowhawk and The Adventurer.

Fuente

Jean-Alfred Villain-Marais was a French actor, writer, director, painter, sculptor, potter and stuntman. He performed in over 100 films and was the muse of acclaimed director Jean Cocteau. In 1996, he was awarded the French Legion of Honor for his contributions to French Cinema.
In 1933, Marais was discovered by filmmaker Marcel L'Herbier, who purchased one of his paintings, then cast him in two films, L'Épervier and L'Aventurier. Marais starred in several movies directed by Jean Cocteau, for a time his lover and a lifelong friend, most famously Beauty and the Beast (1946) and Orphée (1949).
In the 1950s, Marais became a star of swashbuckling pictures, enjoying great box office popularity in France. He performed his own stunts. In the 1960s, he played both the famed villain and the hero of the Fantômas trilogy. In 1963, he was a member of the jury at the 3rd Moscow International Film Festival.
After 1970, Marais's on-screen performances became few and far between, as he preferred concentrating on his stage work. He performed on stage until his eighties, also working as a sculptor. His sculpture Le passe muraille (The Walker Through Walls) can be seen in the Montmartre Quarter of Paris.
He died in 1998. Wikipedia

The sculpture is a tribute to Marcel Aymé, a French writer, and depicts Léon Dutilleul, central character of his book "The man who crossed the walls", a gray office worker who, faced with his failures, alleged that a wall prevented him from fulfilling his purposes. One day he discovers that he can go through walls. Start using this extraordinary capacity for increasingly selfish ends. When he is arrested for theft he escapes from prison through the wall. The outcome comes when, for love, is trapped forever on a wall in front of his own home. Source

Tbilisi / Tiflis, Georgia

In my recent visit to Georgia I came across these two sculptures coming out of the walls, one of them dedicated to the remarkable Gergian director Sergei Parajanov, and the other next to the entrance of a store selling musical instruments

Bronce / bronze, 2004. Foto / Photo: Javier Fuentes, 7/2018. Tbilisi / Tiflis, Georgia.

This monument was opened on November 6, 2004, the year that the famous Armenian filmmaker and critic would have turned 80. It is located on Chardin Street, in the old city. It was sculpted by Georgian artist Vaja (Vazha) Mikaberidze, known as Prasto. Sometimes referred to as the “flying monument,” its design was based on a famous photograph by Yuri Mechitov called “In Flight,” in which Parajanov is seen skipping through the streets of Tbilisi.
The piece was made in Pietrasanta, Italy, in the Fonderia d'arte Massimo del Chiaro.

When seeing it in its original state, and taking into account the image on which it was based, it is seen that the intention was not that the model seemed to be coming out of a wall, but as they have installed it in the city, and surrounded by that leafy vegetation, the effect that occurs is very similar.

Ignant
