Yulia Brodskaya has developed an original working technique based on paper quilling, which originally consists of using strips of paper that are shaped, rolled and glued to create decorative designs. Yulia has taken the process further: "Paper always held a special fascination for me. I've tried many deferent methods and techniques of working with it, until I found the way that has turned out to be 'the one' for me: now I draw with paper instead of on it".
In this post I invite you to enjoy a selection of portraits, although their thematic range is much wider, including animals, typography and commissioned designs for different brands, media, advertising, editorial, books, many of them of large dimensions, with elaborate and complex designs that reveal the thoroughness and industriousness that each work involves.

en Inglaterra / at England

Yulia trabajando en su estudio / At work at her Studio

Yulia Brodskaya is a Russian artist born in 1983 in Moscow. "I started in art school when I was just 6 years old, so I never consider to do anything else."
In 2004 she moved from Moscow to UK where she continued her education in art, at the University of Hertfordshire. She was graduated with a master of art in graphics communication degree in 2006. She started working as a freelance graphic designer, but she very quickly switched to the illustration field and became known for her innovative method of working with edge-glued strips of paper. However, the graphic design background has an influence on her artwork as most of the initial pieces have a strong typographic focus: “Typography is my second love, after paper and I’m really happy that I’ve found a way of combining the two.

«I always make detailed sketches first and at this stage might look for some references for inspiration and do a quick research. Having a clear idea of the design at the sketching stage is important because once a piece of paper is glued I can’t remove it without damaging the background to some extent. However this has never been a real issue: the process is so slow, that I get plenty of time to see and evaluate how a particular strip of paper looks in the composition and remove it straight-away, if necessary.»

"Pull to the light", arte con papel / art with paper

«By working on self-initiated projects I’ve managed to evolve my technique even further away from what is called traditional Quilling. If initially I was applying paper strips in a neat, precise manner, right now I feel an amazing freedom to express myself with paper almost the same way an artist would do using oil or acrylic paint. This new method of working with paper comes as close to painting as: I combine different colour paper strips as if I would select and mix different paints on a pallete, and then pack them tightly together into angular arrangements that mimic the look and feel of an Impressionist brushstroke.
I’m fascinated with this method I invented, the only negative is that it is not much faster than the neat and refined way of gluing strips one by one… I wish I could work faster in order to bring all my numerous ideas to life, but the reality is that I have to preserve all the emotions and inspirations keeping them inside, and only spill them drop by drop (paper strip by paper strip) while working on my pieces.»

In September 2019 Yulia presented her book "Painting with Paper - Paper on the Edge".
«The book is an insight into the way I work, the creative decisions I make every step of the way; there is plenty of practical tips too, but most of all, I hope my journey will inspire people to get in touch with their innate creativity (if you recognize and see beauty, it means that there is already that dimension present in you). The book is not just for those interested in quilling and papercraft, many of the things I write about are inter-disciplinary and might be interesting for anyone who enjoys art in general.»
