Gemmy Woud-Binnendijk (I) [Fotografía / Photography]

Gemmy Woud-Binnendijk is a Dutch artist who, after years dedicated to painting, and due to her personal circumstances, turned her artistic interests to focus on photography. Using very high resolution cameras and digital media, and with a staging that refers to the cultural heritage of the great Masters of the Golden Age, Gemmy builds visual narratives that are located between the tradition of painting and photography, between the painters of the past and artists of today, between analogue details and digital pixels, between reality and fantasy, between the banal and the ideal, between light and shadow and between textured motion and pearlescent stillness.
In this first part of the article, a selection of works from her different series, biographical information and excerpts from some interviews. In the second part, a collection of her exquisite portraits.

Gemmy Woud-Binnendijk
(Rheden, Gelderland, Holanda / Netherlands, 1973-)

Simplemente me gusta hacer imágenes.

Gemmy Woud-Binnendijk is a Dutch contemporary artist, nowadays focused on photography.
Her creative path began with liquid pigments and a brush, but, as life so often does, her path took her away from painting. In claiming space for her creative practice, Gemmy, picked up a camera and started experimenting. "This became a way for me to paint again". Through the manipulation of light and pixels, Gemmy began creating work that exists somewhere in-between painting and photography.
Gemmy’s artworks become a depiction of real things not quite grounded in reality. Each of her painterly photographs expresses a beautiful stillness; a stillness existing between awake and asleep. Gemmy’s works claim the spaces in-between with each work expressing a divine transition between the tradition of painting and photography, between the painters of the past and artists of today, between analogue details and digital pixels, between reality and fantasy, between the banal and the ideal, between light and shadow and between textured motion and pearlescent stillness. A modern story in the light of the past is born. (1)

«I have the constant urge to just, make stuff. I feel good when I can create, when I can translate what's in my brain like to a visual. I painted all my life and I was kind of drawn to the weirdness in painting and the freedom you can have because you can create anything that's not real.
I started in the multimedia sector, so I did that for a while until I gave birth to my first daughter, then things
changed. I always kept on painting, that was a good thing because that was for me one thing to relieve my stress. Then in my private life things changed and I met my husband. Together we have five kids so we're a blend family. That's a lot of dynamics going on every day. I had to stop painting because we don't have a lot of space in the house to paint anymore, so I had to find something to replace that. I started going into photography by accident. For me, the zoo was kind of a way to get to know my camera and experiment, and make
a lot of mistakes, but it also gave me the time with no pressure to experiment.
That was also the moment I was more aware that i needed to do more than only taking pictures at the zoo. The moment that kind of changed my life in photography was a little facebook ad.
Like, okay, you can shoot portrait with a kind of painterly style.» (2)

«I’m Dutch and in Holland you get an education in art history, so you know who Rembrandt and Vermeer, etc. are when you are very young. It’s kind of like it is a part of you. I always painted in that style.
Erwin Olaf, he’s a big hero for me. Kirsty Mitchell also, but in a totally different way. So the photographers who take images and create a kind of stillness without a lot of the dynamics.» (3)

«I don’t know if I am a photographer because you always hear the discussion, what’s a photographer, what’s not? There are still photographers around who think you are not a photographer when you do Photoshop. So I don’t know what I am. I just like to make images. I don’t know if I should call myself a photographer or an artist or I just love to make images and that’s it.» (3)

«Every image that I took in the past, I am not emotionally connected to it anymore because once it’s done, it’s done; I’m on to the next thing. And if I look back at all my images now, I see so many mistakes and I see so many things I would like to do in another way, or do over. I think I take every mistake I make into the next shoot to make it better and not make the same mistake again. I really try to learn from all the shoots and what goes wrong and I try to solve it when I can, but if I can’t then I try to see it as a learning process and take that with me into the next shoot.» (3)

Is time your friend or enemy... Sometimes the passing of time is so fast that you might want to stop the ticking of the clock.

«Every part of the shot is so important that the shooting day is just a small part of this whole project. The most of the time is in preparation.
I try to shoot as close to the end result as possible. The good thing is because I'm shooting tethered, I'm directly seeing what I'm shooting. I can directly adjust things that I don't like, that I like, and that's why it's taking so much time to do a shoot, because I try to see everything
that's wrong already to adjust it in set.» (4)

«The idea for the project was something that was on my mind for a long time, surrounded by teenagers (and adults) so obsessed with their looks, worries if they fit in and the huge pressure that brings starting at a very young age. Everyone is daily surrounded by and confronted with the sometimes absurd pressure to fit within expected standards. Forgetting that being satisfied with who you are and finding your passion is way more important in this life. Mesmerized by the intense beauty of Melanie Gaydos she was for me the perfect ambassador for this project.»

«The unique features for me in this kind of photography are the way you can tell a story with light, color, and lines. For me, the key to master it was and is all about my love and passion for making images/art.
I've sacrificed a lot, almost entirely stepped out of my social life and dived in deep to make all the information that I could find my own.
I spend 14 hours a day, seven days a week at this obsessive passion. Sometimes it’s hard, and a lot of struggling, but it does give me a fulfilling feeling being able to create, tell a story and share it with a lot of people.» (5)
