Óleo sobre lienzo / oil on canvas, 184,5 × 149,5 cm., c.1718-19
Musée du Louvre (París, Francia / France). Wikipedia

Óleo sobre panel / oil on panel, 20 x 25 cm., 1711-12

Pilgrimage to Cythera, so-called The Embarkation for Cythera"
Óleo sobre lienzo / oil on canvas, 129 × 194 cm., 1717.

Óleo sobre lienzo / oil on canvas, 46 x 71,4 cm., 1944.

"Gato y lámpara / Cat and Lamp"
Óleo sobre lienzo / oil on canvas, 40,64 x 50,8 cm., 1928.

Óleo sobre lienzo / oil on canvas, 49,9 x 63,4 cm., 1946
Smithsonian American Art Museum (Washington, EE.UU./ USA)

"Interior del estudio / Studio Interior", acuarela y lápiz sobre papel / watercolor and pencil on paper, 1938.

Each day before starting to paint, Ault made his studio as neat as possible.  Only after everything was in place did he sit down at the easel.  In this watercolor made soon after he moved to Woodstock, Ault made order two times: once in the actual studio, and again in the painting recording it.

"Lentes mágicas / Magic Glasses", óleo sobre lienzo / oil on canvas, 14" x 10",  c.1891

(Northampton, Massachusetts, EE.UU./ MA, USA)

Smith College Museum of Art (Northampton, Massachusetts, EE.UU./ MA, USA)

Soy Effie, visible e invisible,
recordando y recordada.

Mourning Picture

They have carried the mahogany chair and the cane rocker
out under the lilac bush,
and my father and mother darkly sit there, in black clothes.
Our clapboard house stands fast on its hill,
my doll lies in her wicker pram
gazing at western Massachusetts.
This was our world.
I could remake each shaft of grass
feeling its rasp on my fingers,
draw out the map of every lilac leaf
or the net of veins on my father's
grief-tranced hand.
Out of my head, half-bursting,
still filling, the dream condenses-
shadows, crystals, ceilings, meadows, globes of dew.
Under the dull green of the lilacs, out in the light
carving each spoke of the pram, the turned porch-pillars,
under high early-summer clouds,
I am Effie, visible and invisible,
remembering and remembered.

"Bodegón / Still Life"

Portrait of Edward Hyde, 1st Earl of Clarendon, British politician and historian (1609-1674)"
Óleo sobre panel / oil on panel, 74,5 × 61 cm., 1626
Colección de Arte del Gobierno, Embajada Británica, La Haya /
Government Art Collection British Embassy, The Hague

"La municipalidad de La Haya en 1646-47 / The municipality of The Hague in 1646, 1647"
Óleo sobre lienzo / oil on canvas, 283,5 x 373,5 cm., 1647.
Haags Historisch Museum (La Haya, Holanda / Hague, Netherlands)

"Retrato de / Portrait of Jan Corneliszn Geelvinck (1579-1651)", óleo / oil, 1646

On October 9 is the birthday of

Simeon Solomon, English Pre-Raphaelite painter noted for his depictions of Jewish life and same-sex desire.
He was a younger brother to fellow painters Abraham Solomon (1824-1862) and Rebecca Solomon (1832-1886).
Born and educated in London, Solomon started receiving lessons in painting from his older brother around 1850. He started attending Carey's Art Academy in 1852.
As a student at the Royal Academy Schools, Solomon was introduced through Dante Gabriel Rossetti to other members of the Pre-Raphaelite circle, as well as the poet Algernon Charles Swinburne and the painter Edward Burne-Jones in 1857. His first exhibition was at the Royal Academy in 1858. He continued to hold exhibitions of his work at the Royal Academy between 1858 and 1872. In addition to the literary paintings favoured by the Pre-Raphaelite school, Solomon's subjects often included scenes from the Hebrew Bible and genre paintings depicting Jewish life and rituals.
In 1873 his career was cut short when he was arrested in a public urinal at Stratford Place Mews, off Oxford Street, in London and charged with attempting to commit sodomy. He was arrested again in 1874 in Paris, after which he was sentenced to spend three months in prison.
After his prosecutions he no longer exhibited, but achieved a degree of celebrity amongst those who shared his sensibilities: Oscar Wilde, John Addington Symonds, Count Eric Stenbock, and Walter Pater all collected his works.
In 1884 he was admitted to the workhouse where he continued to produce work; however, his life and talent were blighted by alcoholism.
He died in 1905 from complications brought on by his alcoholism.

On October 10 is the birthday of

Jean-Antoine Watteau, French painter born in 1684 (baptized October 10), whose brief career spurred the revival of interest in colour and movement, as seen in the tradition of Correggio and Rubens.
He revitalized the waning Baroque style, shifting it to the less severe, more naturalistic, less formally classical Rococo.
Watteau is credited with inventing the genre of fêtes galantes, scenes of bucolic and idyllic charm, suffused with a theatrical air. Some of his best known subjects were drawn from the world of Italian comedy and ballet.
Showing an early interest in painting, Jean-Antoine may have been apprenticed to Jacques-Albert Gérin, a local painter. Jean-Antoine's first artistic subjects were charlatans selling quack remedies on the streets of Valenciennes. Watteau left for Paris in 1702. There he found employment in a workshop at Pont Notre-Dame, making copies of popular genre paintings in the Flemish and Dutch tradition; it was in that period that he developed his characteristic sketchlike technique.
By 1705 he was employed as an assistant by the painter Claude Gillot, whose work represented a reaction against the turgid official art of Louis XIV's reign.
In 1709 Watteau tried to obtain the Prix de Rome and was rejected by the Academy. In 1712 he tried again and was considered so good that, rather than receiving the one-year stay in Rome for which he had applied, he was accepted as a full member of the Academy.
Watteau lacked aristocratic patrons; his buyers were bourgeois such as bankers and dealers.
He died in 1721.

On October 11 is the birthday of

George Copeland Ault, American painter born in 1891. He was loosely grouped with the Precisionist movement and, though influenced by Cubism and Surrealism, his most lasting work is of a realist nature.
He spent his youth in London, England, where he studied at the Slade School of Art and St John's Wood School of Art. Returning to the United States in 1911, he spent the rest of his life in New York and New Jersey. His personal life henceforth was troubled. He became alcoholic during the 1920s, after the death of his mother in a mental institution. Each of his three brothers committed suicide, two after the loss of the family fortune in the 1929 stock market crash.
Although he had exhibited his works with some success, by the early 1930s his neurotic behavior and reclusiveness had alienated him from the gallery world. In 1937, Ault moved to Woodstock, New York with Louise Jonas, who would become his second wife, and tried to put his difficulties in the past. In Woodstock the couple lived a penurious existence in a small rented cottage that had no electricity or indoor plumbing. Depending on Louise for income, Ault created some of his finest paintings during this time, but had difficulty selling them.
Ault painted what he saw around him, simplifying detail slightly into flat shapes and planes, and portraying the underlying geometric patterns of structures. In his wife's words, painting for him was a means of "creating order out of chaos." An analytical painter and ultimately a realist, Ault is noted for his realistic portrayal of light—especially the light of darkness—for he commonly painted nighttime scenes.
In 1948, Ault was discovered dead five days after drowning in the Sawkill Brook on December 30, when he had taken a solitary walk in stormy and dark weather. The death was deemed a suicide by the coroner. In his lifetime, his works were displayed at the Whitney Museum of American Art and the Addison Gallery of American Art (in Andover, Massachusetts), among others.

On October 12 is the birthday of

Edwin Romanzo Elmer, American portrait, genre and still life painter. Known for his attention to detail, he was also an inventor of a machine for braiding horsewhips.
Spending most of his life in Ashfield, Massachusetts, Elmer is best known for his painting Mourning Picture. This 1890 family portrait depicts the artist, his wife, and their daughter Effie who had died shortly before it was painted. The painting is noted for its intricate detail and the contrast between the mourning family, who sit in relative darkness, and the dead daughter, who is bathed in sunlight. It was first displayed in a local post office in 1890, then disappeared until the 1950s, when a niece of the artist showed it to the director of the Smith Museum. It was then that Elmer's talent was first recognized and his paintings put on display.
The poet Adrienne Rich has written a poem about Mourning Picture from the dead daughter's point of view.
Elmer died in 1923.

On October 13 is the birthday of

Paul Soulikias (Παλαιολόγος Σουλικιάς), Greek-Canadian painter born in 1926 in Komotini, known primarily for his landscape scenes.
After the hardships of the German Occupation and the Greek Civil War, he spent time studying art in Athens and in Paris and ultimately settled in Montreal in 1959. His value as an artist-painter was first recognized in 1965 at a competition among Neo-Canadians, where he received the first prize.
Paul Soulikias is a figurative artist painter with influences from expressionism. Critics[7] have repeatedly praised his colour harmonies and composition as opposed to detail, his warm tones and personal style. Apart from the Laurentians, his work has been informed by several travels, primarily in Greece, the Northeastern United States and the Maritimes as well as from his visit to Mexico in 1982. A large number of his paintings are still lifes and portraits, chiefly female. Although the majority of his work is in oil colours, he has also worked in gouache, watercolours, charcoal and mixed media.

* Paul Soulikias died on January 17th, 2023

On October 14 is the birthday of

Cornelis Janssens van Ceulen (also Cornelius Jonson van Ceulen, Cornelius Johnson, Cornelis Jansz. van Ceulen and many other variants), English painter of portraits of Dutch or Flemish parentage born in 1593 (bapt. 14 October).
He was active in England, at least from 1618 to 1643. He moved to Middelburg in the Netherlands in 1643. Between 1646 and 1652 he lived in Amsterdam, before settling in Utrecht, where he was buried.
Janssens painted many portraits of emerging new English gentry. His early portraits were panel paintings with "fictive" oval frames. His style varied considerably over his career, and he was able to assimilate new influences into his own style without any discordant effect. He was particularly accurate and detailed in depiction of clothing.
Janssens' first dated work is 1617, and may be of a Dutch subject; 1619 marks the beginning of his English portraits, which were initially heads only, although he later painted full length and group portraits.
He has been described as "one of the most gifted and prolific portrait painters practising in England during the 1620s and 1630s". Lionel Cust describes him as being "more accomplished" than Gheeraerts. However, he has also been described as "a good painter, but unable to compete with the flair and superlative skills of van Dyck".
He died in 1661.

Today, October 15, is the birthday of

Michael "Mike" James Stilkey Jr., American artist from Los Angeles born in 1975. He has always been attracted to painting and drawing not only on vintage paper, record covers and book pages, but on the books themselves.
