"Un joven criado cuida el rebaño / A Young Gillie Watch Over the Herd"
Óleo sobre lienzo / oil on canvas, 61 x 153 cm., 1857. Sotheby's

Óleo sobre lienzo / oil on canvas, 101,6 x 89 cm., 1942

"Belomancie I / Belomancia I", 55 x 38 cm., óleo sobre lienzo / oil on canvas, 1927

On January 1 is the birthday of

John Cassidy, Irish sculptor and painter born in Littlewood Commons, Slane, County Meath in 1860.
He moved to Dublin at the age of 20 to find work. In Dublin he attended art classes at night and won a scholarship to study in Milan, Italy. After two years he moved to Manchester, England where he lived for the rest of his life. He created many public sculptures, especially war memorials and exhibited at the Royal Academy, the Royal Hibernian Academy and in Manchester City Art Gallery. He was for a time assisted in his studios by John Ashton Floyd, a local sculptor.
Many of his works are in the Manchester district including three in the John Rylands Library, Deansgate. These include a statue of the library's founder Enriqueta Augustina Rylands made in 1907. For most of his career his studio was at Lincoln Grove in Chorlton on Medlock.
He died in 1939.

On January 2 is the birthday of

Slava Raškaj, Croatian painter born in 1877, considered to be the greatest Croatian watercolorist of the late 19th and early 20th century.
Deaf since birth, Raškaj was schooled in Vienna and Zagreb, where her mentor was the renowned Croatian painter Bela Čikoš Sesija. In the 1890s her works were exhibited around Europe, including at the 1900 Expo in Paris. In her twenties Raškaj was diagnosed with acute depression and was institutionalised for the last three years of her life before dying in 1906 from tuberculosis in Zagreb. The value of her work was largely overlooked by art historians in the following decades, but in the late 1990s and early 2000s interest in her work was revived.
She died in 1906.

On January 3 is the birthday of

Alfred Rudolfowitsch Eberling (Альфред Рудольфович Эберлинг), Russian painter born in Zgierz (today Poland), in 1872.
He moved to St. Petersburg and studied from 1889 to 1897 at the School of Art at the Imperial Academy of Arts in St. Petersburg. During the last year he studied under Ilya Repin.
Between 1900 and 1917 he visited many European countries, where he made contact with art museums. Besides Russian, he spoke German, Polish, French and Italian.
In 1904 began a pedagogical activity of several years. Between 1904 and 1917 he was professor at the School of Drawing of the Society for the Promotion of the Arts. During these years she painted near 100 portraits, mainly of the representatives of the theatrical world, of the dance (like the one of Anna Pavlova) and actresses.
After the Russian revolution, he was also a portraitist of the new rulers. He made portraits of Stalin, Molotov, Gorky, Kaganovich, Kalinin and Lenin, who had mass circulation. In 1924 he won a contest for the best portrait of Lenin, which appeared later printed on bank notes of the rubles.
He died in 1951.

On January 4 is the birthday of

James William Giles, famous Scottish landscape painter born in 1801 in Aberdeen.
At thirteen he maintained himself, his mother and sister by painting, and before he was 20 was teaching taught private classes in Aberdeen. Shortly afterwards he made a tour through Scotland and visited the continent. His earliest successes were in portrait-painting, but his visit to Italy gave him a taste for classic landscape.
Giles was a versatile artist. He specialised in portrait and landscape painting, but in addition was a successful landscape architect, designing a number of public gardens and monuments in Aberdeen, in addition to landscaping estates in Aberdeenshire.
He was a keen angler, and fond of painting the result of a successful day's fishing. These pictures were his best works. He first exhibited at the "Royal Institution for the Encouragement of the Fine Arts in Scotland", but in 1829 he became an academician of the Royal Scottish Academy, and contributed numerous works to its exhibitions from that time until near the close of his career. He also exhibited frequently at the British Institution in London, and occasionally at the Royal Academy and the Society of British Artists. His last work was a painting of himself, his wife, and youngest son, which he left unfinished.
He died in 1870.
During his lifetime, Giles was among the first to be mentioned as one of the most vital of the Aberdeen artists - his patrons included the landed aristocracy of Aberdeenshire and Queen Victoria - but he has been little remembered in subsequent surveys in Scottish art. This is due in part to the fact that he spent most of his working life in Aberdeen – unlike his contemporaries who left the north-east to find fame in London.

On January 5 is the birthday of

Raymond Georges Yves Tanguy, French surrealist painter born in 1900.
At the end of his military service in 1922, he returned to Paris, where he worked various odd jobs. He stumbled upon a painting by Giorgio de Chirico and was so deeply impressed he resolved to become a painter himself in spite of his complete lack of formal training.
Tanguy had a habit of being completely absorbed by the current painting he was working on. This way of creating artwork may have been due to his very small studio which only had enough room for one wet piece.
Through his friend Prévert, in around 1924 Tanguy was introduced into the circle of surrealist artists around André Breton. Tanguy quickly began to develop his own unique painting style, giving his first solo exhibition in Paris in 1927. During this busy time of his life, Breton gave Tanguy a contract to paint 12 pieces a year. With his fixed income, he painted less and ended up creating only eight works of art for Breton.
Throughout the 1930s, Tanguy adopted the bohemian lifestyle of the struggling artist with gusto, leading eventually to the failure of his first marriage. He had an intense affair with Peggy Guggenheim in 1938 when he went to London with his wife Jeannette Ducroq to hang his first retrospective exhibition in Britain at her gallery Guggenheim Jeune. The exhibition was a great success.
In 1938, after seeing the work of fellow artist Kay Sage, Tanguy began a relationship with her that would eventually lead to his second marriage. With the outbreak of World War II, Sage moved back to her native New York, and Tanguy, judged unfit for military service, followed her. Toward the end of the war, the couple moved to Woodbury, Connecticut, converting an old farmhouse into an artists' studio. They spent the rest of their lives there. In 1948, he became a naturalized citizen of the United States.
He died in 1955.

On January 6 is the birthday of

Isaak Izrailevich Brodsky (Исаак Израилевич Бродский), Soviet painter born January 6 1884 [O.S. 25 December 1883], whose work provided a blueprint for the art movement of socialist realism. He is known for his iconic portrayals of Lenin and idealized, carefully crafted paintings dedicated to the events of the Russian Civil War and Bolshevik Revolution.
He studied at Odessa Art Academy and the Imperial Academy of Arts in Saint Petersburg. In 1916 he joined the Jewish Society for the Encouragement of the Arts. When Brodsky asked Lenin to autograph his painting Lenin, he said: "I am signing to what I don't agree with for the first time".
Brodsky was on good terms with many leading Russian painters, including his mentor, Ilya Repin. He was an avid art collector who donated numerous first-class paintings to museums in his native Ukraine and elsewhere. His superb art collection included important works by Repin, Vasily Surikov, Valentin Serov, Isaak Levitan, Mikhail Vrubel, and Boris Kustodiev. After his death Brodsky's apartment on Arts Square in St. Petersburg was declared a national museum. His art collection is still on exhibit there.
Brodsky was an Honoured Artist of the Russian SFSR and a member of the Union of Russian Artists. He was the first painter to be awarded the Order of Lenin. In 1934 he was appointed Director of the All-Russian Academy of Arts. From 1934 to 1939 he was also a head of personal Art workshop in institute, where his pupils included the well-known Soviet painters Nikolai Timkov, Alexander Laktionov, Yuri Neprintsev, Piotr Belousov, Piotr Vasiliev, Mikhail Kozell and others.
He died in Leningrad in 1939.

Today, January 7, is the birthday of

Franciska Clausen, Danish painter born in 1899.
Clausen studied at the Die Grossherzogliche sächsische Hochschule für bildende Kunst in Weimar, Germany (1916–17), at the Women’s Academy in Munich (1918–19), at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts, in Copenhagen, Denmark (1920-21), and under Hans Hofmann at the Hofmann Schule Fur Moderne Kunst in Munich (1921-22). She subsequently sought out private lessons from Laszlo Moholy-Nagy, Berlin Sept. - Dec. 1922, from Alexander Archipenko in Berlin in 1923, and under Fernand Léger in Paris (1924-25).
She was inspired by Laszlo Moholy-Nagy’s Constructionist collages. From 1924 to 1928 in Paris, cubism can been seen in her paintings with a base in Leger's ‘machine style art’. Between 1924 and 1928 Clausen worked in Paris. In the paintings from this period such as, Konstruktiv modellstudie, (1925), Contre-Composition (1928), and Komposition, (1927), was under the influence of Leger’s machine style and is clearly visible. In 1933 she taught at the Tegne- og Kunstindustriskole for Kvinder (Drawing and applied arts school for women) in Copenhagen, Denmark. Through her career Clausen passed through most of the stages in the development of modern art, and her paintings show elements of Neue Sachlichkeit, Constructivism, Cubism, Neo-plasticism, Surrealism and Purism, though her greatest influence was Léger.
She died in 1986.
