Rinocerontes / Rhinos (LXXXIX)

Four days ago the sad news was published: Sudan has died. The last male northern white rhinoceros that was left in the world has succumbed. The northern subspecies has the days counted. Only two females remain alive: Najin, daughter of Sudan, and Fatu, his granddaughter. Both reside in the Kenyan nature reserve of Ol Pejeta, where he lived since 2009, which will go down in history as the last white rhinoceros of the authentic male north that stepped on the land.

Fatu and Najin are the last two northern white rhinos left on the planet. Najin is Sudan’s daughter and Fatu is his granddaughter.

Here you have some words from Ami Vitale, who met Sudan nine years ago, and photographed his last moments:

«When I saw this gentle, hulking creature in the Czech snow, surrounded by smokestacks and humanity, it seemed so unfair. He looked ancient, part of a species that has lived on this planet for millions of years, yet could not survive mankind.
Sudan and three other rhinos left the Dvůr Králové Zoo on a cold night in December 2009. They were brought to move “free” on the Kenyan savannas at Ol Pejeta. The hope was to breed them. The air, water and food—not to mention room to roam—might stimulate them, experts thought. The offspring could then be used to repopulate Africa. Failing that, they would be cross-bred with southern white rhinos to preserve the genes.
I remember so clearly when Sudan first set foot on the African soil. The skies darkened and torrential rains came moments after we arrived. He put his head in the air to smell the rains and immediately rolled around on the ground. It was his first mud bath since he left the continent as a two-year-old, taken from Sudan, the country with which he shares his name. That Sudan was moved to the Dvůr Králové Zoo may have saved his life; the last known wild rhinos were poached on the border of the Democratic Republic of the Congo in 2004.»

Conor Walton

¿A dónde vamos?» C.W.

Charles Darwin en "El Hurgador" / in this blog[Trigo, Dullaway, Walker, Church], [Davie, Collier, Gonnord]

El artista junto a su obra / The artist with his work

Conor Walton is an Irish painter born in 1970 in Dublin.
"I see myself as a figurative painter in the European tradition, attempting to maintain my craft at the highest level, using paint to explore issues of truth, meaning and value. All my paintings are attempted answers to the three questions in the title of Gauguin’s famous painting: ‘Where do we come from? What are we? Where are we going?’" - Conor Walton
"These paintings are exquisite, not simply for their masterful technique but for their intriguing and provocative content as well. This is the art that is destined to shift the paradigm for artistic canon in the 21st century. It takes more than virtuous craftsmanship, it takes well informed innovative ideas to make great artworks. Conor is just the type of innovative thinker we need to take fine art where it must to go for the future. His artwork is insightful, philosophically astute, beautifully rendered and culturally relevant in the contemporary era."
Joseph Bravo (art-historian, critic, curator, Director of the Centro de Artes, Texas A&M University, San Antonio, USA).

Detalle de la obra en proceso / detail of work in progress

"Conor Walton says that the inspiration for this artwork was his love of Renaissance painting and his affinity for the works of Giovanni Bellini in particular. Walton appreciated the solemn tranquility and understated grandeur of Bellinni's great altarpieces. Yet he didn't feel that he good in good faith create an altarpiece in the dogma of Roman Catholicism. He felt that to do such a thing would be inauthentic and exploitative. Instead, Walton appropriates the sacra conversazione to incorporate a more scientific epistemology and still invite a metaphysical subtext to be derived from the narrative.
The painting is quite plausibly a respectable homage to the religious aesthetic tradition and even to a spirituality of a more secular sort. The artist systematically replaced the Christian iconographic components with those of the biological sciences. Walton's saints' are the founders of modern biology: Charles Darwin, the founder of modern evolutionary theory, Gregor Mendel, whose experiments with peas laid the foundations of genetics, and James Lovelock, the father of earth-systems science or 'Gaia' theory." Wojtek Kowalczyk
(Kraków / Cracovia, Polonia / Poland, 1960-)

"Rinoceronte / Rhino"

Virtual Gallery

The main idea of Wojtek Kowalczyk's drawings is to show the world of his art in constant change, in an almost theatrical setting. His sometimes surrealist and sometimes very real presentation of the subject is shown in a never-ending process of transition. New costumes are being put on, new personae come into focus, while other fade away in the distance. Things and persons change into new entities. It is the world which evolves. It is rich in detail, narrative and executed with a mastery that deserves time on the part of the viewer to explore his message: sometimes a witty observation about the world, sometimes a metaphor, often an allusion to mythology, literature, and works of other artists. Virtual Gallery

Luego fui a Madrid.

If bullfighting is art, could be art anything?"

Nick Wamboldt is an illustrator and cartoonist born in Mannheim, Germany.
"Soon, the funny circumstances of life had me growing up on the island of Mallorca in Spain during the seventies (Franco time in Spain) .
Oddly, It happened to be that at that percise time the islands where literally packed with artists.
So you where influenced constanly by everybody around you. Specially comic artists. There was a boom.
Here I visited the local schools as well as the infamous “Escuela de Artes y Oficios” in Palma (the school where you do exactly the opposite of what the teachers tell you to do)."
After that he moved to college Studiying Fine Arts in Manhattanville College, New York.
"Next thing you know I find myself constantly drawing everything from toasters to friying pans during an internship in the advertisement agency Lintas, back in Frankfurt, Germany. Then I went to Madrid. There I became assistant to the “The Master” Jaume Ramis. A genius illustrator who taught me a great deal about craftsmanship, work discipline, and the business in general. From there I started to elaborate some of my own works, and … bit by bit I got more into working for different clients like agencies, magazines and newspapers."
