On March 5 is the birthday of

Carl Gustaf Pilo, Swedish-born (1711) artist and painter, one of many 18th-century European artists who had to leave their own country in order to make a living.
Pilo worked extensively in Denmark as a painter to the Danish Court and as professor and director at the Royal Danish Academy of Art (Danish: Det Kongelige Danske Kunstakademi), as well as in his native Sweden. Carl Gustaf is most famous for his masterly painting, "The Coronation of Gustaf III" commissioned by King Gustav III of Sweden.
He probably received his early training from his father, who had earned his living as a young man as a decorative painter at Drottningholm and Stockholm Palace, although other indications say that he was trained by a painter named Crisman in Stockholm, Sweden. He lived 1738-1741 in Scania where he may have worked as a craft painter for two Scanian noble families. In early 1741 he left Skåne (Scania), and moved to Copenhagen, Denmark. The same year he started working as drawing teacher at the National Cadet Academy. He continued his career as a portraitist in Denmark. In the years 1745-1747 he began to introduce rococo into his artwork.

In 1747 he was named painter to the royal court under the newly crowned King Frederik V, whose duties also included the supervision and restoration of paintings at the royal residences. After several years development he became fully employed by the court.
In 1748 Pilo was named professor at the Drawing and Painting Academy (Tegne- og Malerakademiet), predecessor to the Royal Danish Academy of Art (Det Kongelige Danske Kunstakademi). The Academy moved to Charlottenborg, and became dedicated as the Royal Danish Academy of Art on 30 March 1754, after inspiration from the French Académie française. Around 1757 neoclassicism began to replace rococo as the popular style, and his works became more romantic and dramatic with focus on shadow and light effects, and with more attention paid to depicting the models.
He became a member of the Academy of Art in Augsburg 1759, and a member of the Academy of Art in St. Petersburg 1770.
Pilo left Denmark on 10 or 11 October and arrived in Stockholm in November, after having visited the Ramel family in Skåne. He appeared before the Swedish court but received no immediate commissions.
He was made an honorary member of the Swedish Academy of Art in 1773, was named Director of the Swedish Academy in 1777, and received the Vasa Order in 1784.
He died in 1793.

On March 6 is the birthday of

Anna Claypoole Peale, American painter born in 1791 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
Under her father’s guidance, Anna began studying portraiture, and was able to capture great likenesses of her sitters. He was likely encouraged to train his daughter by his brother Charles Willson Peale who, with William Rush, co-founded the first American art academy, the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts (PAFA). In 1811 at the age of 20 Anna participated in the first exhibition at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, which was also her first major exhibition. There, she exhibited a still life in oils. In 1824, Anna and her sister Sarah Miriam were the first women elected as academicians to the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts.
Anna’s success in portraiture followed generations of portrait artists in her family.

The United States experienced an increase in wealth during the 19th century, a change that broadened the clientele for miniatures. In addition to these beneficial conditions, Anna’s training under her father was advantageous to her because the miniature craft was traditionally slowly acquired and in a master/apprentice capacity.
Some of Anna’s notable sitters included President James Monroe and President Andrew Jackson , senators including Colonel Richard Johnson, an ambassador, scientists, and theologians. Numerous men and women from Philadelphia, Boston, Baltimore, Washington and Richmond Virginia, including many businessmen and their wives, also became sitters.
Anna was known to have painted at least one hundred forty miniatures, still lifes, landscapes and portraits in oils.
Anna Claypoole Peale’s style was influenced by her father, who taught her how to skillfully blend pigments to control color density with watercolors on ivory. However, she adjusted this technique to develop her own style.
She died in 1878.

On March 7 is the birthday of

Giovanni Giacometti, Swiss post-impressionist painter born in 1868 in Stampa. He was the father of the artists Alberto and Diego Giacometti, and architect Bruno Giacometti.
From a young age showed good skills for drawing. That is why in 1886, at 18, he decided to move to Munich to begin his studies at the School of Decorative Arts. There he met the one who would be his great friend, the Fauvist painter Cuno Amiet.
Later, after learning about Impressionism, he traveled to France, where he continued to study at the Académie Julien for two years. In 1891 he returned to Stampa. His concerns, however, did not take long to push him back into the adventure. He went to Italy, where he visited Rome and Naples.

His first successes did not come until 1900, when he exhibited in Zurich with Amiet and Holder. It was then that he married Anette. From this union was born his son Alberto, in 1901, followed by Diego (1902), Ottilia (1903) and Bruno (1907), this being his most complete stage, both personally and artistically.
Between 1901 and 1912 he participated in the Kunstausstellung (Art Exhibition) in Munich and in the Kunstlerhaus (House of Artists) in Zurich, as well as in an exhibition of the painters of the Die Brücke group in Dresden. In these years he had as one of his disciples the Argentine painter Raúl Mazza.
After the First World War, however, his artistic career took a back seat.
He died in 1933.

On March 8 is the birthday of

Franz Gertsch, Swiss painter born in 1930, known for his large format hyperrealistic portraits.
From 1947 to 1952 he was trained in the painting school of Max Rudolf von Mühlenen and Hans Schwarzenbach in Bern. In 1971 he received the Federal Arts Fellowship. In 1972 he participated in the documenta 5 in Kassel, in 1978, 1999 and 2003 at the Venice Biennale. In 1997 he was awarded the Kaiserring Art Prize of the City of Goslar.
In the autumn of 2002, the Museum Franz Gertsch, financed by the entrepreneur Willy Michel, was opened in Burgdorf. In 2005, the first Franz Gertsch retrospective was launched. The exhibition venues were the Museum Franz Gertsch and the Kunstmuseum Bern. Since 2006 Gertsch is honorary citizen of his residential community Rüschegg. On the occasion of his 75th birthday, retrospectives of his work were shown in numerous cities.

The picture Huaa ...! from 1969 represented a turning point in his work. Gertsch was 39 years old, had already been solo exhibitions and books and was in 1957 in the show "The drawing in the works young Swiss artists" was represented in the Kunsthalle Bern - he now "rejected" this earlier part of his work. From 1969 to 1978 he created large-format photorealistic or hyperrealistic paintings.
From 1978 Gertsch went over to individual portraits, as a portrayal of the rock musician Patti Smith and the self-portrait of 1980.
In the period between 1986 and 1994 Gertsch dealt exclusively with woodcuts. An example of this is the oversized woodcut triptych Schwarzwasser (Black Water), which was hand-pulled from three plates of 237 × 185 cm in size on Kumohadamashi Japanese paper in midnight blue.

On March 9 is the birthday of

Jacques (Jacob) d'Agar, French portrait painter born in Paris in 1640.
He was a pupil of Jacob Ferdinand Voet. He began his career as an history painter, but he soon abandoned history for portraiture, in which branch of art he became very successful.
In 1675 he was admitted into the Academy, and also became painter in ordinary to the king and his court. Upon the revocation of the Edict of Nantes, Agar, as a Protestant, was shut out from the Academy. He accordingly left France in 1682, never to return.

He was invited to the court of Denmark, and was greatly patronized by King Christian V. His self-portrait is in the Galleria degli Uffizi in Florence, having been painted for Cosimo III de' Medici in 1693, at the request of King Christian. Walpole tells us that he visited England, where he resided some time, and met with success. He painted the portraits of several members of the British nobility of Queen Anne's reign, including the Duchess of Montagu, the Countesses of Rochfort and Sunderland, Thomas Earl of Strafford, and others. A portrait of Charles II of England, by him, is said to have been formerly in the Gallery at Christiansburg.
He died in 1715 in Copenhagen.
His son Charles d'Agar also became a portrait painter.

"Sophie Crouzet", óleo sobre tela / oil on fabric, 81 x 65 cm. 1801

Louis Hersent, French painter born in 1777 in Paris.
He became a pupil of David, and obtained the Prix de Rome in 1797. In the Salon of 1802, he showed "Metamorphosis of Narcissus", and he continued to exhibit with rare interruptions up to 1831. He married Louise-Marie-Jeanne Mauduit in 1821.
His had many pupils; some of them were Louis-Eugène Bertier, Auguste Bigand, Hélène Charlotte Juliette Bourge, Augustin Luc Demoussy and Henri Joseph Constant Dutilleux. His most considerable works under the empire were "Achilles parting from Brisêis", and "Atala dying in the arms of Chactas" (both engraved in Landon's Annales du Musée); an "Incident of the life of Fénelon", painted in 1810, found a place at Malmaison, and "Passage of the Bridge at Landshut", which belongs to the same date, is now at Versailles.
Hersent's typical works, however, belong to the period of the Restoration. "Ruth", produced in 1822, became the property of Louis XVIII, who from the moment that Hersent rallied to the Restoration jealously patronized him, made him officer of the Legion of Honour, and pressed his claims at the Institut de France (Académie des Beaux-Arts), where he replaced van Spaendonck.

He continued in favour under Charles X, for whom was executed "Monks of Mount St Gotthard", exhibited in 1824. In 1831, Hersent made his last appearance at the Salon with portraits of Louis Philippe, Marie Amélie and the duke of Montpensier; that of the king, though good, is not equal to the portrait of Spontini (Berlin), which is probably Hersent's chef-d'œuvre.
After this date, Hersent ceased to exhibit at the yearly salons. Although in 1846 he sent an excellent likeness of Delphine Gay and one or two other works to the rooms of the Société d'Artistes, he could not be tempted from his usual reserve even by the international contest of 1855.
He died in 1860.

In 2011 the lost diary of Bode was found and donated to the Offenbach city archive. This institution also acquired a bundle with 45 graphical representations of landscape, and history of the artist's motives.
Initially Bode still was influenced by the religiously based Nazarene style. His first important painting was in 1855, "Visit of Mary to Elizabeth," a depiction of the "Visitation" religious motif. In 1897 he created an altarpiece for the new Evangelical St. Paul's Church in Strasbourg. From 1861 to 1864 he was assistant at the Wallraf-Richartz Museum in Cologne. Then he was breaking up in 1866 to paint the choir of niches in the Church of St. Mary in Aachen.
