Gabriel Pacheco [Ilustración]

Gabriel Pacheco

Luis Gabriel Pacheco Marcos is a great illustrator born in Mexico City in 1973 whose work fascinates me. He studied theater and majored in Set Design. He has a degree in children's literature. But thanks to his sister, he found his way into the drawing.  Gabriel is, above all, a poet of the image. Texts in english at the end of the post, quoted [*] in each paragraph.

"I never thought to devote to this, whenever I moved over next to the literature, in fact studied theater, I graduated as a set designer in the Art School of the INBA, and started to work in television. But soon came the disappointment for personal reasons and it was my sister, a graphic designer responsible for coordinating children's literature projects, which brought me to the drawing. One of the ways that I began to make a living was doing reproductions, I made angels by Raphael and Michelangelo, my sister noticed and invited me to do a story called "The Enchanted Frog ', from there began my journey "

[2]
"The text is so well made, has such a making, which is difficult to rework the characters because the text has solved. I worked much of the time with this great conflict because the images I drew were superficial. Were nothing more than a mere reflection of the majesty of the text."

"I realized that I had not noticed the astonishment of the jungle. Almost unnoticed for us, but it's amazing that a child will grow into it. In the book, the weight of the jungle is amazing, so I decided to follow that path and work on the majesty of the jungle. I know it sounds simple, but it took three months of suffering come to that conclusion. I think it was nerves, anxiety to draw a book with a so view aesthetics ... It was like draw Peter Pan "

[3]
For me, the illustrator is a writer, a writer of images, a playwright of arrested moments. In the end we are all people expanding our realities about our own work.

[4]
The process is very controversial and much uncertainty, I always start writing words and sketching shapes without really knowing where to go, until there is dialogue itself it brings me to the mainland. This first step is very intuitive, comes first when I read the text and a word appears strong and permanently in reading, hence always start for further reading at the time I start to draw faces focusing on amplify the universe of gestures, everything is a priori, I don't think about anything, just intuition, then, it becomes a route that is finding the idea and strengthens that first word or question it, is to work blindly to find something, pierce the blue, that it lets us see what we were looking even when we didn't know, just until you have it in front of us we realize that we were looking for. Then the drawing illuminates everything.

[5]
"... always appoint three artists who not only have influenced me, but I kept knowing: Octavio Paz, Pina Bausch and Theo Angelopoulos. About illustrators artists: Wolf Erlbruch, Pablo Amargo, Master Paul Auladell, the magnificent Joanna Council, Xan López Domínguez, Argentine Carlos Alonso ... I don't know, I'm a greedy of finding person and I enjoy the knowledge of others, for me they are all geniuses. Influences me also film, literature, photography, people on the street. Maybe I should conclude that influenced me a lot of people, only like that, people. "

[6]
Q: What advantages do you think that digital technology brings you when express yourself?
A: I don't think it's advantage, in fact I do not see digital technology as something comparative, is a more and add to the rest. Also like any other technique I find the possibility and I play, contrary to what is believed, in the digital work, the finding, meeting, the accident is a wonderful possible that establishes with each repositioning of resources to each test. Moreover, I think it's a lovely idea to work with no other material more than the light, but even more, the fact that all your work is just an electronic impulse, a one or a zero, bits, no apparent weight, and, according to our knowledge, until recently, was elusive, I find it poetic.

[7]
"...the black is the place from which everything arises, the place where everything is said, where you keep everything and, as in the shadows, the colors become light. The white would be therefore another sound, illuminated sonority. So black is the natural place of dreams, as night lends to draw desires with a perfect hue. Yes, the color of imagination always starts in black."

[8]
"It's a work not more complex, but more time-consuming. When you illustrates poetry what you does have to avoid is being literal. If it talks about a red apple, I will not draw a red apple. In poetry there is a particularity with the words, their meanings have some potential, their meanings vary. To translate the meanings of a single word in images, I do it through the metaphor ".
