Roger Mayne, fotógrafo británico nacido en 1929 en Cambridge, conocido por sus fotografías de los niños de Southam Street, Londres.
Estudió química en el Balliol College de la Universidad de Oxford. Aquí se interesó por el procesamiento fotográfico y conoció a Hugo van Wadenoyen, una figura clave en la ruptura de la fotografía británica con el pictorialismo. Al graduarse en 1951 contribuyó con fotografías a Picture Post, y fue fotógrafo ocasional de películas. A principios de la década de 1950 realizó retratos fotográficos de muchos residentes en la ciudad de la colonia de artistas de St. Ives, Cornualles. On May 5 is the birthday of
Roger Mayne, British photographer born in 1929 in Cambridge, best known for his documentation of the children of Southam Street, London.
He studied Chemistry at Balliol College, Oxford University. Here he became interested in photographic processing, and met Hugo van Wadenoyen, a key figure in British photography's break with pictorialism. On graduating in 1951 Mayne contributed pictures to Picture Post, and was an occasional film stills photographer. In the early 1950s he made photographic portraits of many residents in the artist's-colony town of St. Ives, Cornwall. He operated very much in an aesthetic vacuum, struggling to find any coherent tradition of British photography to follow. In 1956 he had a one-man show of his portraits at the ICA (UK), and George Eastman House (US). By 1957 he was established as a freelance photographer for London magazines and book-jacket designers.

With some financial and limited curatorial security established, he began to look for a significant personal project. He found it in the street life of Southam Street in Notting Dale (now often considered part of Notting Hill), which he photographed between 1956 and 1961. The novelist Colin MacInnes asked Mayne to contribute the cover shot for Absolute Beginners (1959), which is set in the area around Southam Street. The Southam Street collection is of national importance, and is now held by the Victoria and Albert Museum, London.
Most of Southam Street was demolished in 1969 to make way for Trellick Tower; a small section still exists. Mayne's Southam Street work had a major retrospective exhibition at the Victoria and Albert Museum in 1986; and was brought to a new audience in the 1990s, through being extensively used for concert backdrops, record sleeves and press-adverts by the singer Morrissey.

In the early 1960s Mayne moved into colour photography, photographing Greece and Spain, artists and their studios, and then landscapes, and publishing work in the mid and late 1960s in the new Sunday Times and Observer colour magazines.
Mayne was an influential figure for the cinematographer Roger Deakins.
He died in 2014.

On May 6 is the birthday of
Lee Jeffries, English photographer born in 1971 in Manchester.
Close to professional football circles, he began photographing sports events. A chance encounter with a homeless young woman on the streets of London changed his artistic focus forever. Jeffries says he initially took a stolen photo of a girl huddled in a sleeping bag. He knew the girl had seen him, but although his first reaction was to leave, something made him stay and discuss with her. His perception of the homeless changed radically and from there they became the object of his art.
He explains that each image is the result of long discussions with each individual, a privileged moment that allows him to establish a connection that is particularly palpable in their gaze. The emotion is in the eyes, explains Lee Jeffries, whose majestic black-and-white portraits enable him to collect funds to assist and bear witness to the difficult living conditions of these isolated individuals.
He is known for volunteering and contributing to Seattle's Union Gospel Mission where he works directly with the homeless community of Seattle. He has also earned representation from French Art Studio in London.

Gábor Gerhes, Hungarian photographer born in 1962 in Budapest.
He began his career in the late 1980s. Paralel to his artistic practice he has been teaching at several universities. His photos and installations of carefully staged composition show everyday, banal scenes and objects, which, through their ironic manner of presentation, bear cultural references.
In his recent works he deals with the subversive representations of power. He received many awards including National Cultural Fund Award for Excellence in Fine Arts (2009), Munkacsy-Prize (2005), Price of Art Future,Taipei (2000).

Camille-Léon-Louis Silvy, French photographer born in 1834 in Nogent-le-Rotrou, primarily active in London.
He learned photography from his friend, Count Olympe Aguado, in 1857, and became a member of the Société française de photographie in 1858. He then moved to London and opened a portrait studio at 38 Porchester Terrace, Bayswater, becoming a member of the Photographic Society in 1859. Sitters in Silvy's portraits include Princess Mary Adelaide of Cambridge, Queen Emma of Hawaii, Lady Amberley, Harriet Martineau, Adelina Patti, Sara Forbes Bonetta and Frederick Robson. He also photographed many members of the British royal family. The National Portrait Gallery, London, holds his studio's daybooks, which include details of some 17,000 sittings, with about 12,000 of these showing an image from the sitting.
He closed his studio and returned to France in 1868. He himself believed that his nervous system had been damaged by exposure to potassium cyanide in the darkroom but it more
likely that he suffered from manic depression. The last thirty years of his life were spent in a succession of hospitals, sanatoria and convalescent homes.
He died in 1910.

Glemie, a retired truck driver is an accomplished blues singer, but he's also known for his small game hunting skills. Every fall he hunts an average of 150 raccoons, which he skins, dresses, and sells as food to clients. This extra income supplements his meager retirement benefits. Born in southern Arkansas and the son of a sharecropper, Glemie was often required to pick 100 pounds of cotton a day and raccoon was often the staple family meal. Link

Dave Jordano, American documentary, commercial and fine art photographer born in 1948 in Detroit, Michigan.
He attended the College for Creative Studies and received a BFA in photography in 1974. Shortly after Jordano moved to Chicago, and in 1977 he started a commercial photography business in Chicago. As a commercial photographer Jordano worked with Crate & Barrel, Starbucks, Nestle, Sears, McDonald's, General Mills, Kraft, Kitchen Aid, Oscar Mayer, and Kellogg's.
Jordano has been producing fine art photography since 2001, when he began work on Chicago Bridge Project, photographs of bridges and other industrial structures in and around Chicago.

After living homeless for several years, Tom built himself a one-room cabin on a small patch of abandoned city property perched along the Detroit River. It measures about 7 X 10 feet. All of his building materials are derived from discarded items found in construction site dumpsters. He has lived the last ten years at this location, first in a small 4 X 6 foot hut that he built atop a 15 foot high abandoned railroad embankment. Extremely resourceful, introspective, and independent, he has lived without the luxury of heat, electricity, or running water. His is currently constructing his third house that he's been building for the past two years and plans to complete by the summer of 2018. It will measure 16 X 16 feet which will be four times larger than his previous house. He's done all of this with nothing more than a hammer and a hand saw. Link

Se graduó de la Universidad Técnica Checa en Praga. Fue fotógrafo aficionado desde 1904. Fue cofundador del Club de Fotógrafos Aficionados de la República Checa en 1908, del que fue presidente durante mucho tiempo. También fue miembro del comité editorial de Photographic Horizon.

On May 10 is the birthday of
Alois Zych, Czech photographer born in 1874 in Jičín.
He graduated from Czech Technical University in Prague. He was an amateur photographer since 1904. He was a co-founder of the Czech Club of Amateur Photographers in 1908, where he was chairman for a long time. He was also a member of the editorial board of the Photographic Horizon.
The main Zych photographic genre was the nude. He exhibited his nudes for the first time at the Rudolfinum in 1911. His models were his wife and her sister.
He also devoted himself to landscape photography in pictorialistic style, using several techniques. He was one of the first Czech photographers to have individual exhibitions.
His activity decreased from 1930s, when he moved to rural areas for health reasons.
He died in 1943.

Today, May 11, is the birthday of
Jorge Aravena Llanca, Chilean photographer, writer, researcher and singer-songwriter born in 1936 in Pichilemu.
In the 1970s, Aravena Llanca recorded the Cueca songs "Quiero Volver a Pichilemu" (song considered anthem of Pichilemu), "Invierno Cruel", and "Tonada al Macaya". He released the album "Cantando a mi tierra" in 1995 featuring these songs, in collaboration with Voces Costinas and Caucahue.
Jorge Aravena Llanca was named "Illustrious Son of Pichilemu" by the Municipality of Pichilemu.
