Recolección / Compilation (CXLII-1) - El rapto de Europa / The Rape of Europa

The Rape of Europa
In Greek mythology, Europa was a Phoenician princess of Argive origin, the mother of King Minos of Crete. The story of her abduction by Zeus in the form of a bull was a Cretan story; as classicist Károly Kerényi points out, "most of the love-stories concerning Zeus originated from more ancient tales describing his marriages with goddesses. This can especially be said of the story of Europa."
Europa's earliest literary reference is in the Iliad, which is commonly dated to the 8th century BC. Another early reference is in a fragment of the Hesiodic Catalogue of Women, discovered at Oxyrhynchus. The earliest vase-painting securely identifiable as Europa dates from mid-7th century BC.

In late August of 1628, Rubens was summoned to Madrid to inform Philip IV of Spain, about diplomatic negotiations then taking place between Spain and England in which he was involved. The trip turned into a nine-month stay, during which Rubens made copies of many of the more than fifty paintings by Titian then in the Spanish Royal Collections. Among them was Titian´s original Europa, which hung in the king´s private summer apartments, the Cuarto bajo de verano (Lower Summer Quarters) in Madrid´s Alcazar Palace. This work, as well as other copies after Titian, was taken by Rubens to Antwerp upon his return in the spring of 1629.

"(...) in the background, the goddess Palas, armed with a helmet, argues with Aracne, competing on their respective skills in the art of tapestry. Behind them is a tapestry reproducing The Rape of Europe painted by Titian for Philip II, which Rubens copied during his trip to Madrid in 1628-1629. It was one of the erotic stories of Jupiter, father of Palas, which Aracne had dared to weave and which Palas used as an excuse to turn her into a spider".

Serov draws a comparison between the academic image of antiquity and the archaic period. His unique approach is also evident in the theme’s interpretation: the bull rushing forward has involuntarily turned his head backwards: the uncouth abductor of the beauty has underrated her power. Serov's Europa, unlike the frightened heroines of old masters, is self-composed. She has a perfectly symmetrical face of Greek Kore and embodies triumphant perfection. The bull's horns take on the shape of a lyre, whose invisible strings seem to give voice to the sky and the sea.
