SR: ¿Tienen muestras a futuro programadas?

The Hall

[1]
The small Nicolás Loureiro Exhibition Hall belongs to the Institución Teatro El Galpón, which has become a relevant cultural center for the city of Montevideo with its 70 years of history.
El Galpón is an Uruguayan theatrical institution founded on September 2, 1949 from the union of two theatrical institutions: La Isla, directed by Atahualpa del Cioppo and the cast of Teatro del Pueblo.
Located on the main avenue of the city of Montevideo (18 de Julio), with three theatres, it is supported by the public and the members of El Galpón and Socio Espectacular. It stands out that, through the task of Cultural Extension carried out by the institution, thousands of children and young people attend the theater daily.
The complex also has a cafeteria and a School of Performing Arts.

[2]
On the occasion of the constitution of the space for exhibitions "Sala Nicolas Loureiro", we have interviewed its curator, Gerardo Mantero, plastic artist, editor of the magazine of the Socio Espectacular and co-director of the magazine La Pupila.
For the opening of this hall, the El Galpón Theater has decided to pay homage to one of the most relevant Uruguayan sculptors, Octavio Podestá, who at 91 continues working. This exhibition gathers a selection of his works, where the most characteristic of his language is displayed.

[3]
Shirley Rebuffo: Who was Nicolás Loureiro and why was his name chosen as a tribute to a hall of plastic arts?
Gerardo Mantero: Nicolás Loureiro was a member of the El Galpón theatre. In the seventies of last century, he went into exile in Mexico with his companions. He was an excellent graphic artist making memorable posters of the theater, and also an outstanding puppeteer.

SR: How did the idea of the theater come about?
GM: From a reformulation of the spaces of the headquarters of El Galpón, that space is destined to the sum of the rooms that integrate the circuit of the visual arts of our city. We plan to hold four exhibitions a year, which reflect the diversity of trends that characterize the contemporary scene, with the rigor in the search for quality required by the programming of the hall.

SR: Who are the people in charge of the artistic program?
GM: A commission was created, made up of Dante Alfonso, actor, director and editor, Rodolfo Da Costa, actor and set designer, and the person who writes these lines, visual artist, cultural manager, co-director of La Pupila, art magazine.

[4]
SR: Do you have any future shows scheduled? How long do you estimate each show will last?
GM: We're working on four exhibition projects for 2020, which will have wide diffusion.

SR: Is there or will there be a guided tour for foreigners?
GM: It's not planned for now, but it's an idea to consider for the future.

The entrance is free and can be visited Monday to Friday from 10 am to 9 pm and Saturdays and Sundays from 5 pm to 8 pm.

The Show

[5]
SR: Why was Octavio Podestá chosen as the first artist to be exhibited?
GM: For being one of the most significant national sculptors of the 20th century. If we review his career, we can visualize the evolution of contemporary sculpture, influenced by the avant-garde of modernity. As an example, Podestá was a precursor of mobility in light sculpture. In this exhibition, which does not pretend to be a retrospective, we can appreciate pieces representative of the different stages of his language, which oscillates between figuration and abstraction, in a permanent dialogue between volume and space. The condition of homage-show, has to do with a singular consideration to an artist like Podestá, because of the importance of her work, her social commitment and her known goodness and generosity.

[6]
"The exhibition does not intend to be a retrospective, but rather a review of the most significant periods of her extensive career, such as her figurative stage, where the compositional synthesis and the successful treatment of the material to draw the silhouette of her well-known bulls, or the series of the cockroaches and the walking knights stand out; creations that, within the exhibition space, coexist with the corporeal dungeons, where it is possible to recreate the oppressive and dramatic atmosphere that the military dictatorship established, and that also graphs the imprint of an artist committed to his time and his political vision, as well as his recognized solidarity. Podestá's work was conceived to be exhibited in public spaces, thus emphasizing the urban art character of sculpture -which is also present in the show-, with its recognized pieces that oscillate between figuration and abstraction, while installing a dialogue between volume and space; in his forceful compositions, iron sculptures, the use of scrap metal and, in many cases, pieces assembled with wood or objects that resignify what has been created and establish combinations a priori impossible.
Gerardo Mantero (excerpt from the exhibition catalogue)

[7]
Octavio Podestá was born in 1929 in Montevideo, where he lives and has his studio.
As for his work, he tells:
«I usually start with what the material suggests to me. I could say that 99% of all my work was like that. I went to where there was a mountain of junk and I had the freedom to choose what I wanted. Sometimes I would keep one little piece because it suggested something to me and then I would add something else, and what was 10 centimeters ended up in 3 meters. But I had, as I say, an iron collection. I knew where there was an iron and if I needed something I didn't have to go out.»

[8]
«Since I was very young I thought that sculptures had to be in public spaces. One always see them in galleries or museums or even travelling. When I was in Colombia, suddenly I would pass by an avenue and see three monumental sculptures in full color. I thought: "Look at that!" Here they were all equestrian sculptures, all sculptures of heroes.»
_________________________

[9]
If there is one thing that characterizes Podestá's work, it is the monumental nature of many of his pieces. In the streets of Montevideo, and also in other parts of the country, there are several good samples of his public work. Some of these sculptures have already been published in the blog ("Euritmia", "Cavernaculum", "Overlock", see links below). Here you have some others, along with photographs of his studio taken in successive visits by Shirley.

[10]
«I start with what I find, with the materials. I find something and I analyze it until something comes out. When you're doing it you think of others. I think about what I want to communicate so that the other person understands, enjoys, feels what I felt. In general there is nothing sad; it's difficult for someone to cry in front of a sculpture of mine; it's not my style, it's not my character. I don't know if they understand my sculptures or not, but they are everywhere. I know that I can do something and the person who sees it interprets something else very different and that is also good because there is a freedom. I like to enjoy the form and colour and not so much the anecdote.»

"Heir of rust and fire"
to Octavio Podesta

Disciple of the wind
heir of rust and fire
from your hand to the heart
a violin string tightens
opening up a deadly
hurt to the routine.

Bleeding metal
in that red groove and
the seed of your hard trade
will germinate when spring comes.

And puff pastry, iron and shapes will sprout
that will float in that unique space
where only the silences inhabited
and that perfume
with the humidity of the time.

Sculpting space and solitudes
symbolizing
all feelings
you were leaving the skin
that from your hands
gave it tenderness to the iron.

Alchemist of all metals
hands of worker
disobedient blacksmith
from the deep corner of dreams
in defiance of all engineering
you were always a sculptor of landscapes
of love and life...

Julio Garategui
