On February 1 is the birthday of

John de Burgh Perceval, well-known Australian artist born in 1923.
Perceval was the last surviving member of a group known as the Angry Penguins who redefined Australian art in the 1940s. Other members included John and Sunday Reed, Joy Hester, Sidney Nolan, Arthur Boyd and Albert Tucker. He was also an Antipodean and contributed to the Antipodeans exhibition of 1959.
In 1938 Perceval contracted polio and was hospitalised, giving him the opportunity to further his skills at drawing and painting. Enlisting in the army in 1941 Perceval first met and befriended Arthur Boyd.
Moving to England in 1963 Perceval held solo exhibitions in London, and travelled to Europe, before returning to Australia in 1965. John Perceval, a major retrospective exhibition, was held at Albert Hall, Canberra in 1966. Author Margaret Plant's monograph John Perceval, was published in 1971.
Suffering from alcoholism, and later in life from schizophrenia, in 1974 Perceval was committed to the psychiatric hospital Larundel, Melbourne, where he remained until 1981.
He died in 2000.

On February 2 is the birthday of

Sébastien Bourdon, French painter and engraver born in 1616. His chef d'œuvre is The Crucifixion of St. Peter made for the cathedral of Notre Dame.
He was apprenticed to a painter in Paris. In spite of his poverty he managed to get to Rome in 1636; there he studied the paintings of Nicolas Poussin, Claude Lorrain and Caravaggio among his eclectic selection of models, until he was forced to flee in 1638, to escape denunciation by the Inquisition for his Reformed Protestant faith. Bourdon's facility rendered him adept at portraiture, whether in a dashing Rubens manner or in intimate, sympathetic bust-length or half-length portraits isolated against plain backgrounds that set a formula for middle-class portraiture for the rest of the century, landscapes in the manner of Gaspar Dughet or capricci of ruins, mythological "history painting" like other members of Poussin's circle or the genre subjects of the Dutch Bamboccianti who were working in Rome. His eclectic range of styles have given art historians exercise in tracing his adaptation of his models, while the lack of an immediately recognizable "Bourdon style" has somewhat dampened public appreciation.
In 1652 Christina of Sweden made him her first court painter. Bourdon spent most of his working career outside France.
He died in 1671.

On February 3 is the birthday of

Moses Levy (موزس ليفي), Italian-British painter and engraver of Tunisian origin born in 1885.
He was one of the pioneers of the genre in Tunisia and one of the precursors of the Ecole de Tunis (Tunisia School).
He received an early age artistic training. In 1900, when he was fifteen, he attended the Art Institute of Lucca. Three years later, he studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Florence with masters like Lorenzo Fattori.
Admitted in 1907 at the Seventh Venice Biennale with seven etchings, he received an award for a work entitled "La Raccolta delle olive". In 1911, he exhibited at the Chamber of Commerce of Tunis, and then in Rome (1913).
Levy's work is characterized by the strong presence of color, the blue sky and the sea, the warm colors of the walls of the houses that protect fresh interiors, the colorful costumes of African subjects, beaches, like Viareggio, and elegant silhouettes of women and children.
Levy knew how to set motion without freeze it, suggesting smells, portray the intimacy of a heterogeneous population, the beauty and dignity of women. He gave priority to the movement against still life, unusual in his production,
He died in 1968.

On February 4 is the birthday of

Alessandro Magnasco, also known as il Lissandrino, Italian late-Baroque painter born in 1667, active mostly in Milan and Genoa. He is best known for stylized, fantastic, often phantasmagoric genre or landscape scenes.
He apprenticed with Valerio Castello, and finally with Filippo Abbiati (1640–1715) in Milan. Except for 1703–09 (or 1709–11) when working in Florence for the Grand Duke Cosimo III, Magnasco labored in Milan until 1735, when he returned to his native Genoa.
After 1710, Magnasco excelled in producing small, hypochromatic canvases with eerie and gloomy landscapes and ruins, or crowded interiors peopled with small, often lambent and cartoonishly elongated characters. The people in his paintings were often nearly liquefacted beggars dressed in tatters, rendered in flickering, nervous brushstrokes. Often they deal with unusual subjects such as synagogue services, Quaker meetings, robbers' gatherings, catastrophes, and interrogations by the Inquisition. His sentiments regarding these subjects are generally unclear.
He died in 1749.

On February 5 is the birthday of

Leza Lidow, American artist born in 1924.
Lidow was brought up in a creative and intellectual environment. Her father was a World War I pilot, who later found a career as a stunt pilot for film. Her mother, daughter of a Russian diplomat, was born in China, and was an avid collector of Asian art and translated Asian poetry.
At an early age she showed a passion for painting. At 18 she married the composer Friedrich Hollaender, who wrote for Marlene Dietrich as well as for Hollywood films. Film studios were interested in her as a potential actress but she declined in order to paint.
Her education in art was continued in Paris and Switzerland. In 1951, Lidow returned to Los Angeles and exhibited solo at Roperi's Gallery. Soon after, she married industrialist and founder of International Rectifier Corp, Eric Lidow, and they had two sons together.
In 2005 arthritis had complicated her ability to paint. She started to make short films to continue her artistic expression.

* Leza Lidow died in 2014

Today, February 6, is the birthday of

Henry John Carl Wuorila-Stenberg, Finnish artist born in 1949, who in many of his works has tones of expressionism and surrealism.
He began his art studies in Finland 1967–1969 in the School of the Finnish Academy of Art as a private pupil and then in the Free Art School under the guidance of Tor Arne and Unto Pusa. He continued his studies in Accademia di Belle Arti di Roma 1970-71 and moved then to West Berlin, where in 1974 he earned his academic degree in the Berlin State School of Fine Arts. In 1978 he studied anatomy in Hochschule für Bildende Künste Dresden in the class of Gottfried Bammes.
Wuorila-Stenberg has been a long-time teacher of painting. He worked in the University of Art and Design 1984-98 and in the Academy of Fine Arts in 1996-2005 first as a part-time teacher and then as a professor and the head of the department of painting.
Wuorila-Stenberg has been awarded with the Finland Prize in 1996, an honorary diploma of the World Cultural Council in 2003 and the Pro Finlandia Medal in 2004.
In 2013 he published his autobiography Hämärän näkijä (in Finnish).

Is a sculpture by Antonio Canova first commissioned in 1787 by Colonel John Campbell. It is regarded as a masterpiece of Neoclassical sculpture, but shows the mythological lovers at a moment of great emotion, characteristic of the emerging movement of Romanticism. It represents the god Cupid in the height of love and tenderness, immediately after awakening the lifeless Psyche with a kiss. The story of Cupid and Psyche is taken from Lucius Apuleius' Latin novel The Golden Ass, and was popular in art.

There are two versions of this pastel. It seems likely that Hamilton painted this version for exhibition. Such an ambitious pastel would have advertised Hamilton's exceptional skill in what was thought of as a more modest medium. It is outstanding in terms of size, grandeur of conception and quality of finish. It pushes the medium of pastel to unprecedented heights and is a milestone in the development of pastel as a public art form, seeking to compete in visual terms with oil painting.

Boreas (Greek: Βορέας, Boréas) was the Greek god of the cold north wind and the bringer of winter. His name meant "North Wind" or "Devouring One". Boreas is depicted as being very strong, with a violent temper to match.
Boreas was also said to have kidnapped Oreithyia, an Athenian princess, from the river Ilissus. Boreas had taken a fancy to Oreithyia, and had initially pleaded for her favours, hoping to persuade her. When this failed, he reverted to his usual temper and abducted her as she danced on the banks of the Ilissus. Boreas wrapped Oreithyia up in a cloud, raped her, and with her, Boreas fathered two sons—the Boreads, Zethes and Calais—and two daughters— Khione, goddess of snow, and Cleopatra.
