Mujeres al pincel / Women With The Brush (I) - Leyster, Bailly, Abdalieva

If somebody ask to those who are not experts in art history about names of recognized women painters, probably would not remember more than a couple of them (Frida Kahlo, Tamara de Lempicka ...), but the truth is that there are many very good examples of women in this artistic genre. So let´s review their work through the centuries.
Biographical information except where noted, comes from Wikipedia, and as far as possible from the artists own pages.
Inescapable references, the blog Figuration Féminine (Peinture de la femme par la femme), with a comprehensive historical archive dating back to women artists of the Middle Ages, and the National Museum of Woman in the Arts in Washington, as they say "the only museum in the world dedicated exclusively to recognizing the contributions of women artists. "
So here we go ...

Judith Leyster (Leijster)
(Haarlem, Nederland / Países Bajos / Netherlands, 1609 - Heemstede, 1660)

"Autorretrato / Self Portrtait", óleo sobre lienzo / oil on canvas, 74,6 × 65,1 cm., ca.1630
National Gallery of Art (Washington, EE.UU./ USA)

Judith Jans Leyster (also Leijster) (Haarlem, July 28, 1609 Heemstede, February 10, 1660) was a Dutch painter who worked with formats of varied dimensions. She cultivated the genre works, portraits and still lifes.
Leyster was the eighth child of Jan Willemsz Leyster, a brewer and local tailor. No details of her formation are well known. In her youth she was sufficiently well known to be mentioned in a Dutch book of Samuel Ampzing therefore entitled Beschrijvinge lof der Stadt Haerlem, originally written in 1621, revised in 1626 to 1627, and published in 1628.
By the year 1633, is documented her Membership to the Guild of St. Luke in Haarlem, which only managed two women. In 1636, she married Jan Miense Molenaer, a prolific painter, but with less talent, which was dedicated to similar topics. They moved to Amsterdam to improve economically, since there the art market was more stable. There were eleven years; they had five children, of whom only two reached adulthood. Eventually, they moved to Heemstede where Leyster died at age 50.
Most of her works are dated 1629-1635, which coincides with the period before she had children. Only two pieces after 1635 are known; two illustrations in a book about tulips from 1643, and a portrait from 1652. Information from Wikipedia.

Lausanne / Lausana, 1938)
