Artemisia Lomi Gentileschi (Rome, July 8, 1593 - Naples, 1654) was a Caravaggist Italian painter, daughter of the Tuscan painter Orazio Gentileschi (1563-1639).
She lived in the first half of the seventeenth century. She took from his father, Orazio, the limpid rigor of drawing, by grafting a strong dramatic accentuation taken from the works of Caravaggio, full of theatrics, a stylistic element that contributed to the spread of Caravaggism in Naples, a city where she moved in 1630.

Artemisia Gentileschi is considered one of the earliest Baroque painters, the most complete of her generation, winning for her art in an era when women painters were not easily accepted. She painted historical and religious pictures in a time when such heroic themes were considered unsuitable for the female spirit.
Retouched and modified works of his father, giving them a realism not previously had. She added a dramatic atmosphere, emphasizing the chiaroscuro of Caravaggio's way, thus helping to mature this style. She thus represents a violent Caravaggism.
