Yo no nací siendo fotógrafa comercial. Nací siendo una artista, y he estado haciendo arte toda mi vida."

On July 7 is the birthday of

Robert Demachy, prominent French Pictorial photographer born in 1859. He is best known for his intensely manipulated prints that display a distinct painterly quality.
When he turned eighteen Demachy briefly served a year as an army volunteer, but he soon returned to his life of comfort. In the mid-1870s he began frequenting the artists’ cafés and, perhaps in rebellion to his gentrified life, he became involved in the growing bohemian culture that was beginning to take hold in Paris. He began making sketches of café patrons and people on the street, a practice he continued throughout his life.
Sometime in the late 1870s he began experimenting with photography.
In 1894 he began to use the gum bichromate printing process recently introduced by A. Rouillé-Ladevèze at the Paris Salon. He developed a style that relied upon heavy manipulation of the image both during the development of the negative and again while printing.
He died in 1936.

On July 8 is the birthday of

Kāveh Golestān Taghavi Shirazi, (Persian: کاوه گلستان ‎), Iranian photojournalist and artist born in 1950. Golestan was educated at Millfield School in Somerset, England.
Kaveh was the son of the Iranian filmmaker and writer Ebrahim Golestan and the brother of Lili Golestan, translator and the owner-artistic director of the Golestan Gallery in Tehran, Iran.
Golestān won a Pulitzer Prize for his coverage of the 1979 Iranian Revolution and subsequent events.
In 1988, working as a freelance photographer, he took the first pictures of the aftermath of Halabja poison gas attack during the Iran-Iraq War.
On April 2, 2003, he was killed at the age of 53, as a result of stepping on a land mine while working for the BBC in Kifri, Iraq.

On July 9 is the birthday of

Editta Sherman, Italian-American photographer born in 1912, often referred to as the "Duchess of Carnegie Hall", since she lived and worked in Carnegie Hall Artist Studios for over 60 years. Originally formed as a diverse artist enclave and bohemian work-live rental studios to financially support Andrew Carnegie's struggling concert hall, Sherman's home from the 1940s until 2010 allowed her to be part of a unique artistic community of neighbors. Her life's work consists of thousands of historical large format 8×10 negative camera portrait images taken of celebrities, writers, poets, models, sports heroes, politicians, and many others (including many of the famed former tenants of Carnegie Hall).
Sherman was a muse of Andy Warhol who filmed her with filmmaker Paul Morrissey in the 1970s. She also appeared in the Abel Ferrara film Ms. 45 in 1981. She was a model as well as photographer and was photographed by Francesco Scavullo and symbolized aging gracefully at age 60 years old in his book "On Beauty" in the 1970s. She died in 2013.

On July 10 is the birthday of

Jill Greenberg, American photographer and artist born in 1967. She is known for her portraits and fine art work that often features anthropomorphized animals that have been digitally manipulated with painterly effects.
Greenberg has worked successfully as a commercial photographer and has done a large number of celebrity portraits. She specializes in portraiture and uses painterly effects that are drawn using computer technology. On this success: "It’s hard because the serious art world can be an odd place for the people who have achieved commercial success first. I wasn’t born a commercial photographer, I was born an artist, and I’ve been doing art my whole life."
Greenberg says that the commercial photography has influenced and provided inspiration for her portrait work. Greenberg said: "I wouldn’t have had access to the monkey if I hadn’t been shooting him for a commercial project. I decided to do a portrait of the monkey, and that’s when I decided to do a series of them."

On July 11 is the birthday of

Chris Killip, photographer born in Douglas, Isle of Man, UK, 1946, who has worked at Harvard University in Cambridge, Massachusetts since 1991, where he is a professor of visual and environmental studies.
In 1964 moved to London where he worked as an assistant to the advertising photographer Adrian Flowers. He soon went freelance, but in 1969 stopped his commercial work to concentrate on the photography that he wanted to do. In 1969 he moved back to the Isle of Man, photographing it extensively. The work from this time was eventually published by the Arts Council as Isle of Man: A Book about the Manx in 1980.
Killip is well known for his gritty black and white images of people and place. He produced a body of work from his photographs in the northeast of England, published in 1988 as In Flagrante. These black and white images, mostly made on 4×5 film, are now recognised as among the most important visual records of living in 1980s Britain.

* He died on October 13, 2020
