Aniversarios (XXVI) [Julio / July 20-26]

El 20 de Julio es el cumple de

Giorgio Morandi, pintor italiano nacido en Bolonia en 1890, considerado uno de los mejores del s. XX en su país.
En 1907, tras un breve periodo laboral en la misma empresa en la que trabajaba su padre, recibió instrucción artística en la Academia de Bellas Artes de Bolonia. 
En un primer momento siguió a los futuristas y al movimiento Novecento italiano. Tras su amistad con Giorgio de Chirico su obra comenzó a influenciarse por la de éste. En 1927 participó en la primera exposición del movimiento novecentista, vinculado con el régimen de Mussolini. Poco a poco su estilo fue definiéndose e independizándose del De Chirico. 
En 1945 se celebró su primera exposición individual, en la galería Fiore de Florencia. En 1960 el director Federico Fellini rendiría tributo a Morandi en su largometraje La Dolce Vita, donde aparecían algunas de sus pinturas. Murió en 1964.

Magda Frank Fisher, escultora húngara nacida en 1914.
Nació en Kolozsvár, Transylvania, que en la época pertenecía a Hungría, pero que en 1918 fue incorporada a Rumania. Debido a la persecución Nazi, dejó Hungría para vivir en Suiza. Años después se mudó a París para estudiar en la Académie Julian. En 1950 llegó a Buenos Aires para visitar a su hermano, su único familiar vivo. Allí fue nombrada profesora en la Academia de Artes Visuales de Buenos Aires y expuso en la Galería Pizarro.
Su obra es parte de las colecciones del Museo Nacional de Arte Moderno de París y los Museos Nacionales de Bellas Artes de París y Buenos Aires.
Frank se reasentó en Argentina en 1995 y construyó la Casa Museo Magda Frank en el barrio de Saavedra. Murió en 2010 en Buenos Aires.

El 21 de Julio es el cumple de

Lovis Corinth, pintor, grabador y escultor alemán nacido en 1858 en Tapiau (Gvardeysk), Prusia, en cuyo trabajo maduro realizó una síntesis del impresionismo y expresionismo. Corinth estudió en París y Múnich, y fue uno de los representantes del movimiento artístico Sezession (Secesión de Berlín).
En 1902 abrió una escuela de pintura y poco tiempo después se casó con una de sus estudiantes, Charlotte Berend, veinte años más joven que él.
Charlotte, además de esposa y madre de sus hijos fue su musa inspiradora, influenciándolo profundamente, la vida familiar se transformó en uno de sus temas preferidos, conjuntamente con los paisajes, los bodegones y los retratos.
Su obra fue exhibida en la célebre exposición Entartete Kunst en Múnich, los nazis lo consideraron arte degenerado. Murió en 1925.

Emil Orlik, pintor, grabador y litógrafo nacido en Praga en 1870.
Estudió arte en la escuela privada de Heinrich Knirr, donde uno de sus compañeros fue Paul Klee. Desde 1891 estudió en la Academia de Múnich con Wilhelm Lindenschmit. Más tarde aprendió a grabar con Johann Leonhard Raab y procedió a experimentar con varios procesos de impresión.
Tras realizar su servicio militar en Praga, regresó a Múnich, donde trabajó para la revista Jugend. Pasó la mayor parte de 1898 viajando por Europa, visitando Holanda, Gran Bretaña, Bélgica y París. Durante este tiempo le llamó la atención el arte japonés y el impacto que había tenido en Europa, así que decidió visitar Japón para aprender las técnicas de grabado en madera. Marchó a Asia en marzo de 1900, haciendo una parada en Hong Kong, antes de llegar a Japón donde se quedó hasta febrero de 1901.
En 1905 se mudó a Berlín y tomó un puesto en la Escuela de Gráficos y Arte para Libros", del Museo de Artes Decorativas (Kunstgewerbemuseum), actualmente parte de los Museos Estatales de Berlín. Enseñó en el Colegio de Artes y Oficios de Berlín, donde uno de sus estudiantes fue George Grosz. Murió en 1932

Edward Hopper, famoso pintor estadounidense nacido en Nyack en 1882, célebre sobre todo por sus retratos de la soledad en la vida estadounidense contemporánea.

Alexander "Skunder" Boghossian, pintor y profesor de arte etíope-armenio nacido en 1937. Pasó gran parte de su vida viviendo y trabajando en Estados Unidos.
Estudió arte de manera informal en la Escuela Teferi Mekonnen. También con Stanislas Chojnack, un historiador del arte etíope y pintor acuarelista. 
Boghossian ganó el segundo premio en la celebración del jubileo de Haile Selassie I, en 1954. Al año siguiente se le concedió una beca que le permitió estudiar en Europa. Pasó dos años en Londres, trabajando en la Escuela St. Martin, la Escuela Central y la Escuela Slade. Luego nueve años estudiando y enseñando en la Académie de la Grande Chaumière, en París. En 1966 regresó a casa, enseñando en la Escuela de Bellas Artes de Addis Ababa hasta 1969. En 1970 emigró a los Estados Unidos, para enseñar en la Universidad Howard desde 1972 hasta 2001.
Fue el primer artista contemporáneo africano cuya obra fue comprada por el Museo de Arte Moderno de París, en 1963. En 1966 el Museo de Arte Moderno de Nueva York compró su obra La Boda de Juju, en 1964.
Murió en 2003.

El 23 de Julio es el cumple de

Hein Heinsen, artista danés nacido en 1935 en Grindsted. 
Hizo su debut en el escenario artístico en los '60 como parte del movimiento Minimalista. Fue profesor de la Academia Real de Bellas Artes de Dinamarca desde 1980 a 1989.
Ha trabajado principalmente en esculturas de bronce y grandes instalaciones desde mediados de los '80.
Actualmente trabaja como consultor para el proyecto Trinity Machine.

Peder Severin Krøyer, pintor danés nacido en 1851. Es uno de los más conocidos y queridos, y sin lugar a dudas el más colorido de los pintores de Skagen, una comunidad de artistas daneses y nórdicos que vivieron, se reunieron o trabajaron en Skagen, Dinamarca, especialmente durante las últimas décadas del siglo XIX. Krøyer era el líder no oficial del grupo. 
Su debut oficial como pintor fue en 1871 en Charlottenborg con un retrato de un amigo, el pintor Frans Schwartz. A lo largo de su vida expuso regularmente en Charlottenborg . 
En 1874 Heinrich Hirschsprung compró su primer cuadro de Krøyer, estableciendo un patrocinio de larga duración. La colección de arte de Hirschsprung es la base del Museo Hirschsprung en Copenhague. 
Murió en 1909.

Alfons Mucha, pintor y artista decorativo checo nacido en 1860, ampliamente reconocido por ser uno de los máximos exponentes del Art Nouveau.

Vladimir Lukich Borovikovsky (Володимир Лукич Боровиковський), pintor ruso de origen ucraniano que dominó el retrato ruso a principios del s.XIX.
Después de septiembre de 1788, Borovikovsky vivió en San Petersburgo donde cambió su apellido cosaco "Borovyk" por uno de sonido más aristocrático. 
Durante sus primeros diez años en San Petersburgo vivió en la casa del poeta, arquitecto, músico y teórico del arte Príncipe Nikolay Lvov, cuyas ideas influenciaron fuertemente el arte de Borovikovsky. A los 30 años era ya muy mayor como para asistir a la Academia de las Artes, así que tomó lecciones privadas de Dmitry Levitzky y más tarde del pintor austríaco Johann Baptist Lampi.
Tenía su propio estudio, y a menudo delegaba en asistentes la pintura de las partes menos importantes de los retratos. Sus modelos incluyeron miembros de la familia imperial, cortesanos, generales, muchos aristócratas y figuras del mundo artístico y literario ruso. Murió en 1825.

El 25 de Julio es el cumple de

Thomas Eakins, pintor estadounidense nacido en Filadelfia en 1844. 
Estudió en la Escuela de Bellas Artes de Jean-Léon Gérôme y de Léon Bonnat entre 1866 y 1868. Viajó después a España y luego regresó a los Estados Unidos donde comenzó una brillante carrera como pintor realista. Enamorado de la realidad óptica, se interesó por la fotografía. En 1882 fue nombrado profesor de la Academia de Bellas Artes de Pensilvania, una escuela de arte vanguardista donde enseñó fotografía. En 1886 perdió su puesto en dicha academia por haber revelado la desnudez de un modelo masculino a un público femenino en un curso de anatomía.
Su esposa, Susan Macdowell Eakins (1851-1938), fue también pintora.
Eakins murió en 1916.

William Morris, artista del vidrio estadounidense nacido en 1957, quien ha sido capaz de cambiar la historia del arte durante su vida. Fue educado en la Universidad Estatal de California y la Universidad Central de Washington.
Comenzó su carrera con el vidrio como conductor de camiones para la Escuela del Vidrio Pilchuk en Stanwood, Washington, donde por primera vez tomó contacto con el material. Luego aprendió el arte del vidrio y eventualmente se convirtió en instructor de la Escuela.
En lugar de centrarse en la belleza natural del vidrio, utilizó las posibilidades del medio para transformarlo en madera, hueso, fibra y nervio. Se inspiró en antiguas civilizaciones, tales como la egipcia, asiática, nativa estadounidense y latinoamericana. También obtuvo inspiración del mundo salvaje y las relaciones entre el hombre y los animales.
Alcanzó gran éxito durante su carrera, y se retiró en 2007.

Hoy, 26 de Julio, es el cumple de

George Grosz (Georg Ehrenfried Groß) pintor alemán nacido en 1893, cuyo estilo evolucionó desde el Dadaísmo a la Nueva Objetividad, corriente de la cual fue uno de los principales maestros.
Entre 1909 y 1912 estudió en la Academia de Dresde, y entre 1912 y 1917 en la Academia de Artes y Oficios de Berlín (Kunstgewerbeschule), con la idea de dedicarse a la historieta, aunque también se dedicó a copiar obras de maestros clásicos a la vez que realizaba unas caricaturas muy personales para periódicos y revistas satíricas.
En 1913 se trasladó a París, ciudad en la que entró en contacto con las vanguardias, el Cubismo y el Futurismo. En éstos años desarrolló una importante evolución en su estilo pictórico, con una progresiva simplificación de las formas.
En 1914 se alista en la infantería del Ejército Alemán, en un regimiento de granaderos. Tras licenciarse y de vuelta a la pintura, entre 1915 y 1917, la simplificación gráfica de su obra se agudizó, para permitirle expresar el horror de la guerra y el desplome moral que siguió a la derrota prusiana. Murió en 1959.

Julio de Pablo, artista plástico español dedicado a la pintura y el dibujo nacido en 1917 en Revilla de Camargo, Cantabria.
También trabajó la cerámica y el cartelismo, pero destacó en pintura al desarrollar un estilo muy personal. Es considerado decano de la pintura cántabra e insigne referente cultural de la región.
Su vocación pictórica nació al establecer contacto, en 1939, con la obra de Agustín Riancho. En 1947, a la edad de 30 años, el artista presenta su primera exposición, en el Ateneo de Santander, en el que expuso un total de 27 obras.
Son los años 70 la época más activa del artista, manteniendo su propio estilo y con un ritmo de trabajo acelerado, llega a realizar más de 28 exposiciones individuales y participa en 35 exposiciones colectivas. Murió en 2009.

On July 20 is the birthday of

Giorgio Morandi, Italian painter born in Bologna in 1890, considered one of the best in the s. XX in his country. 
In 1907, after a brief tenure at the same company where his father worked, he received art instruction at the Academy of Fine Arts in Bologna. 
At first he followed the Futurists and Italian Novecento movement. After his friendship with Giorgio de Chirico his work began to be influenced by the latter. In 1927 he participated in the first exhibition of nineteenth-century movement, linked to the regime of Mussolini. Gradually his style was defined and independent from the De Chirico. 
In 1945 his first solo exhibition was held in the gallery Fiore in Florence. In 1960 the director Federico Fellini yield tribute to Morandi in his film La Dolce Vita, where some of his paintings appeared. He died in 1964.

Magda Frank Fisher, Hungarian sculptor born in 1914. 
She was born in Kolozsvár, Transylvania, which at that time belonged to Hungary but in 1918, was incorporated into Romania. Because of Nazi persecution, she left Hungary to settle in Switzerland. Years later, she moved to Paris to study at the Académie Julian. In 1950, she arrived in Buenos Aires to visit her brother, her only living family member. Here, she was appointed professor at the Artes Visuales de Buenos Aires and exhibited at the Galería Pizarro.
Her works are part of the collections at the Musée National d'Art Moderne in Paris, the National Museum of Fine Arts in Paris, the National Museum of Fine Arts in Buenos Aires. Frank resettled in Argentina in 1995 and built the Magda Frank House Museum in the Saavedra barrio at Vedia 3546. She died in 2010 in Buenos Aires, Argentina.

On July 21 is the birthday of

Lovis Corinth, German painter, engraver and sculptor born in 1858 in Tapiau (Gvardeysk), Prussia, in whose mature work realized a synthesis of impressionism and expressionism. Corinth studied in Paris and Munich, and was one of the representatives of the Secession art movement (Berlin Secession). 
In 1902 he opened an art school and soon after he married one of his students, Charlotte Berend, twenty years younger than him. 
Charlotte besides wife and mother of his children was his muse, deeply influencing it, family life became one of his favorite themes, along with landscapes, still lifes and portraits. 
His work was exhibited at the famous exhibition Entartete Kunst in Munich, the Nazis considered degenerate art. He died in 1925.

Emil Orlik, painter, etcher and lithographer born in Prague (1870).
He first studied art at the private art school of Heinrich Knirr, where one of his fellow pupils was Paul Klee. From 1891, he studied at the Munich Academy under Wilhelm Lindenschmit. Later he learned engraving from Johann Leonhard Raab and proceeded to experiment with various printmaking processes.
After performing his military service in Prague, he returned to Munich, where he worked for the magazine Jugend. He spent most of 1898, travelling through Europe, visiting the Netherlands, Great Britain, Belgium, and Paris. During this time he became aware of Japanese art, and the impact it was having in Europe, and decided to visit Japan to learn woodcut techniques. He left for Asia in March 1900, stopping off in Hong Kong, before reaching Japan, where he stayed until February 1901.
In 1905 Emil Orlik moved to Berlin and took a post at the "School for Graphic and Book Art" of the Museum of Decorative Arts (Kunstgewerbemuseum), now part of the Berlin State Museums. He taught at the Berlin College of Arts and Crafts, where one of his students was George Grosz. He died in 1932.

On July 22 is the birthday of

Edward Hopper, American painter born in Nyack, 1882, especially famous for his portraits of solitude in contemporary American life.

Alexander "Skunder" Boghossian, Armenian Ethiopian painter and art teacher born in 1937. He spent much of his life living and working in the United States.
He studied art informally at the Teferi Mekonnen School. He also studied under Stanislas Chojnacki, a historian of Ethiopian art and watercolor painter.
Boghossian won second prize at the Jubilee Anniversary Celebration of Haile Selassie I in 1954. The next year he was granted a scholarship which allowed him to study in Europe. He spent two years in London, working at St. Martin's School, the Central School, and the Slade School. He then spent nine years studying and teaching at the Académie de la Grande Chaumière in Paris. In 1966 he returned home, teaching at Addis Ababa's School of Fine Arts until 1969. In 1970 he emigrated to the United States, teaching at Howard University from 1972 until 2001.
Boghossian was the first contemporary African artist to have his work purchased by the Musee d’Art Moderne in Paris in 1963. In 1966, the Museum of Modern Art in New York acquired his painting Juju's Wedding (1964)
He died in 2003.

On July 23 is the birthday of

Heinsen Hein, Danish artist born in 1935 in Grindsted. 
He made his debut in the art scene in the '60s as part of the Minimalist movement. He was professor of the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Denmark from 1980 to 1989. 
He has worked mainly in bronze sculptures and large installations since the mid-'80s. 
He currently works as a consultant for Trinity Machine project.

Peder Severin Krøyer, Danish painter born in 1851. He is one of the best known and beloved, and undeniably the most colorful of the Skagen Painters, a community of Danish and Nordic artists who lived, gathered or worked in Skagen, Denmark, especially during the final decades of the 19th century. Krøyer was the unofficial leader of the group.
His official debut as a painter was in 1871 at Charlottenborg with a portrait of a friend, the painter Frans Schwartz. He exhibited regularly at Charlottenborg throughout his life.
In 1874 Heinrich Hirschsprung bought his first painting from Krøyer, establishing a long-standing patronage. Hirschsprung's collection of art forms the basis of the Hirschsprung Museum in Copenhagen.
He died in 1909.

On July 24 is the birthday of

Alfons Mucha, Czech painter and decorative artist born in 1860, widely recognized as one of the best examples of Art Nouveau.

Vladimir Lukich Borovikovsky (Володимир Лукич Боровиковський), Russian painter of Ukrainian origin who dominated Russian portraiture at the turn of the 19th century.
After September 1788 Borovikovsky lived in Saint Petersburg where he changed his surname from the Cossack "Borovyk" to the more aristocratic-sounding "Borovikovsky". For his first ten years in Saint Petersburg, he lived in the house of the poet, architect, musician and art theorist, Prince Nikolay Lvov, whose ideas strongly influenced Borovikovsky's art. At 30-years-old, he was too old to attend Imperial Academy of Arts, so he took private lessons from Dmitry Levitzky and later from Austrian painter Johann Baptist Lampi.
He had his own studio, and often relied on assistants to paint the less important parts of a portrait. His sitters included members of the imperial family, courtiers, generals, many aristocrats, and figures from the Russian artistic and literary worlds. He died in 1825.

On July 25 is the birthday of

Thomas Eakins, American painter born in Philadelphia in 1844. 
He studied at the School of Fine Arts of Jean-Léon Gérôme and Léon Bonnat between 1866 and 1868. Then traveled to Spain and then returned to the United States where he began a successful career as a realist painter. A lover of the optical reality, became interested in photography. In 1882 he was appointed professor at the Academy of Fine Arts in Pennsylvania, avant-garde art school where he taught photography. In 1886 he lost his position in the academy for revealing the nakedness of a male model at a female audience in a course of anatomy. 
His wife, Susan Macdowell Eakins (1851-1938), was also a painter. 
Eakins died in 1916.
William Morris, American glass artist born in 1957 who has been able to change the history of art within his lifetime. He was educated at California State University, Chico, California and Central Washington University.
William Morris began his glass career as a truck driver for Pilchuck Glass School, Stanwood, Washington, where he was first introduced to the material. He then learned the art of glass making and eventually became an instructor at the School.
Instead of focusing on glass's natural beauty, he uses the medium's ability to transform into wood, bone, fiber, and sinew. He is inspired by ancient civilizations, such as Egyptian, Asian, Native American and Latin American. He also draws inspiration from the wilderness and the relationship between man and animal.
Morris achieved much success during his career and retired in 2007.

Today, July 26, is the birthday of

Julio de Pablo, Spanish artist devoted to painting and drawing born in 1917 in Revilla de Camargo, Cantabria. 
He also worked in ceramics and poster, but he excelled in painting by developing a personal style. It is considered the dean of Cantabria painting and famous cultural reference in the region.
His artistic vocation awake when in 1939 he discovered the work of Augustine Riancho. 
In 1947, at age 30, the artist presents his first show at the Ateneo de Santander, where he exhibited a total of 27 works. 
The decade of seventies were the most active time of the artist, keeping his own style and with a fast work pace, get to perform more than 28 solo exhibitions and participated in 35 group exhibitions. He died in 2009.
